Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@RoonilWazlib99 Yes I am. :wink:

Two honors day invitations today! We were kind of expecting them, but it was nice to get.

Not sure she will attend both.

@PlateauMama oh no. That just sounds like college app torture. So sorry.

Congrats to your D, @bearcatfan!

Any updates @3scoutsmom and @traveler98 ? Anyone else here waiting on McDermott news?

S accepted by Ithaca’s Park School of Communications. I figured he’d get into Ithaca, but Park was a surprise. His essay must have made up for his GPA. There’ll have to be a 15K grant on top of the 15K scholarship for it to be affordable.

It’s a happy day for us, DS feels like Charlie in the Chocolate Factory! He got one of the 10 early McDermott invites!!!

S got his McDermott email a little while ago, he didn’t get one of the coveted early finalist spots but he is moving on for consideration. He’ll be notified on February 1 whether he makes the cut for finalist. So a bit more waiting but this was what we agreed was likely to happen, and he’s happy that he wasn’t eliminated in this round of review.

@3scoutsmom - CONGRATULATIONS to you and your DS !!! I was hoping that someone from our group would get one of the early McDermott finalist invites.

My D got the notification that said she didn’t get the early invite, but has another chance when they make the Feb announcement.

McDermott finalist in the house!

D has submitted all of her applications…10 in total. One last scholarship app is left. Phew! She’s had one acceptance and will hear from 2 EA schools later this month…the rest will trickle in between late January and the end of March…so we wait! In mid September I didn’t think she would ever finish writing the essays!

@melvin123 It is torture. Fortunatly she has dropped 5 schools of her list in the last 2 weeks so we will end up at 11 vs the 17 she started out with.

Congrats to @3scoutsmom and her DS!!!

And best wishes to the rest of our 18er applicants.

So excited for your kiddos @3scoutsmom and @PlateauMama! That’s awesome news!

@LMHS73, we’ll wait together for February 1. Congrats to your D for remaining in the competition! I’m not sure what’s the right word for their status. “Semifinalist” doesn’t seem right. The situation seems somewhat analogous to a “deferred” verdict in EA/ED admissions but that doesn’t feel like the right label either. Hmmm. Well, whatever the description it’s good that they are moving on even if they didn’t get an early finalist spot.

DD didn’t realize there were only 10 spots the first round. She thought it was 1/2 and 1/2. She got really excited when I told her it was only 10!

@3scoutsmom, I am so, so happy for your S18 and your entire family! And @PlateauMama, so happy for your D as well!

Just read an article that average student loan debt is 34K. Interested to see what you all think because that actually seems kind of low to me.

Seems rather high to me, considering a freshman can only take out 5.5K in loans. It goes up per year from there, but not by much. Does this 34K take into account loans that are co-signed by parents?

It could include Perkins loans

A lot of students live at home, work and are able to borrow very small amounts. Community college is more “normal than you would think. Those families are not on College Confidential so it is easy to forget they are a big group.

Congrats McDermott finalists and “semi-finalists”. Y’all are part of a very competitive pool. Would love to see our CC family become McDermott Scholars!
