Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Checking in on this always fast moving thread!

I love the mailer question - here it would be Univ of Chicago, Muhlenberg and Hofstra. But I agree with the one who said it comes in spurts. He has heard from all the Ivies but Yale the most - though he’s not applying there. Actually I’m not sure if he heard from Princeton, though he is applying there. Um. I wonder if he should rethink that!

I feel like we did all of this backwards, to be honest. DS’s dream school is UPenn, which he applied ED. None of us feel very confident. He is average for the Ivies - Ranked 1st, 34 ACT, 1500 SAT, etc., It just feels like he is competing with 6700 kids just like him - a lot better, some maybe a little lower, but all similar. Now having this date looming over all of us is beyond stressful. He only applied to a few other state schools, so if Penn is a no, he has so much applying to do, so many essays to write. It feels never ending. So many in his class have more than 1 acceptance and here…nothing yet. It’s disheartening but honestly, most of them are not rolling admissions, so it’s just envy on our part. It’s such a stressful year - way more than we expected.

It is going to be a long week.

I was thinking the same thing @melvin123 . Facebook is a nice idea (and I will join the page once I get over my fear that someone on here might be someone I know from around here…lol) but I hope folks still post here too.

I would join a FB group. Some folks in 2013 CC parents group set up a FB page which I didn’t join. Several of them stopped posting on CC. That was a bummer. So, for those of you who are not FB people, I will continue to come here even after a FB page is set up. Hopefully most folks will. It’s a very supportive group here.

@labegg I would definitely join a FB group but I will also keep posting here for sure

I’ll be around, even with FB. I’ve got a '22er after all, so I’m at least 4 more years on CC!

@labegg oh your story! XX I did something so similar to my D early on, she was also very angry (I made her do the tour too - double XX X_X ) She never did consider that school, which was too bad as it’s a nice school, but probably too big for her tastes in the end anyway.

But I have to report my evening success! @ShrimpBurrito she said yes! I told her you all said it was such a nice place that surely she would like and should consider and it’s just the common app plus the school stuff and she said alright, sure why not, might as well. :open_mouth: :D/ She’s missed all the early deadlines, but she’s still fine for RD, and it looks like they’ll still consider her for scholarships under RD so why not? Now I just have to pester her to actually do it!

Yaaaaaaaay! :D/ :D/ =D> =D>
That just made my day! :-bd
I sure hope she likes it, or I’ve lost all credibility with your D. ;))

I agree that it is vital to keep posting here on CC!

One thought about a FB group - open, closed or secret? If I join, I’ll be joining with my author profile because that my only presence on FB. But I post stuff here that I wouldn’t want out in the wide world, you know? Mostly it’s about S’s privacy.

I’d prefer closed or secret rather than open.

It would be a secret FB group, parents only.

Hi all. Stalker here. I would join a private FB page.
Feel so badly for my DD. Waiting on ed but shes beyond stressed. Has totally obnoxious teachers this year and might get the first C of her life (straight As until now). ED school hasn’t announced the date yet. Plus lots of other stressful situations. Poor kids why do we let this happen.

I’d be in for a private Facebook page, too - that and here are the only two places I post anything, lol.

The semester feels like it’s winding down, since the last day of our three-day exam period is December 19. I’m not sure who is more ready for a long break, me or the kids!

I’ll keep posting on both.

S18 officially got a financial package yesterday. The remainder is almost do-able monthly without a loan, but it would be tight. We aren’t eligible for parent plus. We’re still waiting on other packages (and acceptances).

I forgot to say, I’ll do the FB group and stay here on CC also since I’ve got D21 coming up next and !OMG! S23 bringing up the rear! Congrats @apraxiamom, we’ve got a number in mind we can pay and need at least some amount of FA and/or merit to make it work. That adds to the stress so much!

I will be on both paces too.

I would join a closed FB group and will definitely still lurk on CC as I also have a DD22. She is very different from my first 2 and I know I will be looking in a completely different direction for her so it will be a new, exciting, stressful experience for sure.

@1822mom I am running into, and hearing from, more and more Californians who are moving to North Texas due to job relocations or just for a reduced cost of living. You will have more company than you may think!

One of the girls from my D’s school who graduated last year is attending Trinity and she loves it! We know another girl who went there and graduated a couple years ago who also loved her time there.

I also have a S21 so I am not going anywhere; I will still be around asking questions about good schools for a 3.0 avg kid. Sigh.

I will still be here for D21 and good lord, D25!! Congrats to those that have acceptances and merit in hand!

OK. Now you’re all just trying to make me feel old. S’18 is our youngest. Yup - empty nesting next year.
