@traveler98 We can start a carrier pigeon group. And I can send you photoshopped pics of my family scaling Mt. Everest. :))
Seriously, FB HQ is like the Deathstar in our area. But I do say “Good Morning” to Sheryl Sandberg when I see her occasionally helping at the school where my pickup basketball group plays.
You all are so supportive and fun! Thank you for info. DD just finishing up pile of apps, when in comes a new supplemental. Thankful for opportunities if not for more hoops to jump through!
Thank you all so much for all your well wishes, welcomes, and thoughts on our move! I will say that my emotions on this move are decidedly mixed. I’m excited about the adventure and potential great things this change brings, but sad to leave what has been a pretty good thing behind. All of our family is in CA (though not all local to us) so there is that element as well. So IRL I hear a lot less about the positive exciting things (though people do try) than I do about the sad things, so it was nice to come here and get that outside validation >:D<
Thank you @ShrimpBurrito for letting me know it can be done. I have to tell you though, since you left SD, it’s gotten a lot hotter! Lots of people still don’t have a/c but there are more and more days they wish they did! I have it and I run it more each year. I think 13 years ago I used it maybe a week out of the year if that, last year I used it probably 3 months. Summer was hot, and fall was hotter!! And electricity costs are crazy $$$. If we weren’t moving we’d put in solar.
On the college front, D did apply to 2 CSU campuses as her in-state safeties and I’m uncertain if she would be grandfathered in for in-state rates as a CA high school graduate or not. But it doesn’t really matter. She wants to go to a small LAC and she already has 2 acceptances with merit awards sufficient to make them affordable so those are now her safeties. The real issue for me is she refuses to consider any of the Texas LACs, so she will definitely be a plane-ride away :(( But I guess the bonus is Dallas seems to be only about 2 hrs from just about everywhere
I agree that for D22 this transition time is just about right and it has helped tremendously for her. She had one moment of “oh no are we really doing this?!?” and sadness over leaving but has otherwise really been fine. She goes to a small K-8 where the kids kind of scatter to different high schools so she was already prepared for a transition to a new school where she didn’t know anyone. Now that school will just be in Texas.
@Booajo maintaining your own sanity is indeed a very substantial goal. It is in fact one of the reasons for our move. H has been unhappy in his current situation, and though he has told me we don’t have to go, he can just stay, I know that is completely ridiculous. Even discounting the obvious financial benefits, he is clearly very excited about the position, and having him happy in his work makes for a much happier family overall. I’ve been in your position and I know it’s hard and I wish you all the best with your situation.
Now to catch up on other thread topics: if D18 went to a school just on volume of mailers it would be LSU or Pitt, 2 schools she never considered and would never consider. Too big for my LAC girl.
I’m in for FB, but honestly I never go on there. Maybe I would just for you guys. :-*
Ohhh, @1822mom, has your D really looked into Southwestern U, in Georgetown, TX? It’s a sweet, tiny LAC (a CTCL) on the outskirts of Austin. It’s hip and progressive and GORGEOUS, in a movie set of a town. If she hasn’t already, I hope she will give it a serious look. She’d be up for merit, if the deadline hasn’t already passed. Come on fb and I can show you photos. :))
Re. Mailer, he has two desk drawers full of mailers before I started auto-recycling since S never looks at any. Too many to guess who sends the most. And he still gets 20+ emails a day, he’s shut down completely! He’s only put in 4 EA apps, two safeties, two he’d be happy to attend and is waiting until after Dec 20th to decide if he’s applying to others. @1822mom , congrats! @booajo, sanity very important!
I just went through all of DD mailings last month. 100 different school. If I remember right University of Chicago, Furman and University of Evansville were the top 3. We did not apply to any of the 3.
Ugh @ShrimpBurrito I feel like I’m beating my head against a brick wall when I try to talk to her about either Trinity or Southwestern. I may give another lean on Southwestern, but she is so stubborn! If it didn’t require the school report and counselor rec, I would sneak into her common app and just submit it (though that would get me in huge trouble! @-) >:) )
Honestly though, I think she has secretly picked a school. She will never answer the question “do you have a favorite?” but I know she does. Problem is she’s never visited the school so I’m a tad worried we’ll visit this spring and all will go haywire… :-SS
Oh, and did I mention she makes me keep all the mailers we get? She’s collecting them to do an art project for her IB art class, I think we have more than she needs just in what we’ve collected this fall!
@1822mom we kept all the mailing since summer. Over 30 pounds of mailers. I was so happy to get rid of that pile. I hope her project turns out awesome.
I sprang an impromptu visit to Southwestern on DD last year. We had been shopping in San Marcos and on our way back to our hotel in Austin, while she slept in the car, I drove to Southwestern and woke her up when we got there. HUGE mistake, did I say HUGE? Yeah, she was so mad at me, she didn’t speak to me for hours. It was right in the middle of her “I refuse to think about college” stage. Needless to say she refused to even consider it after that.
Re: Mailers, I don’t know who D has gotten the most from. They have come in spurts. She got a lot from Tulane for awhile, and WashU, and Case Western. A lot from OU more recently. I think the winner, though, if only for longevity, is UChicago. Still not enough to spur D to apply. She too has been saving the mailings…I see a dark ritual involving fire in her future. :))
And odds? I usually love to play, but it’s all out the window at the moment. Someone on the McGill forum posted that they were accepted today, with similar stats to my D, also a dual citizen living in the US. Makes me wonder if D’s app has been red flagged for some reason. I am SO glad that D has three favorites. If all of her hopes and dreams were pinned on McGill alone, things would be pretty rough around here right now.
@labegg. I pulled that on my kids except it was Pepperdine, and they wouldn’t even get out of the car!!! Where does D want to go to school? California.
Odds:
Stanford 4%
USCal 15%
Cal Poly SLO 20%
UMiami 20%
I’ve got no idea 41%
