OSU has some great merit scholarships for OOS students. My son got the National Buckeye and the Maximus 2 years ago. Not a high GPA to keep them (maybe it’s a 3.0). Do a search for those @wrights1994 . Their priority application date to be considered with highest chance was Nov. 1.
Ohio State has pulled back a little on certain of its merit scholarships over the past couple of years.

I see. My son’s totals $17,100 per year, but for 2018. the same combination of scholarships would equal $16,500 per year.
@RoonilWazlib99 this is so interesting about the mailers to your S. Thanks for sharing!
@ShrimpBurrito count me in with the group saying that the McGill “deferral” probably has something to do with the scholarship.
@1822mom are you happy with the potential move? I’m wishing you the very best with it!
@1822mom indeed, good luck with moving. I’m quite unhappy in my current job, except for pay. So I’m trying to keep going at least another few weeks so I get through the EA process. If S gets in somewhere great but pricey, it will be a hard decision. Maintaining my own sanity is a not insubstantial goal.
About this time during the class of 2016 admission cycle some of the parents on the CC Class of 2016 parent thred decided to start a private group on Facebook. It was an open invitation to CC 2016 Parents and about 60 CC parents eventually joined. Today we are still very active, many of us have met up IRL and it generally has been a very positive, supportive experience. (Apparently the Class of 2019 parents have already started a FB group).
I was wondering if any fellow 2018 parents would be interested in de-cloaking and starting/joining a private FB group?
@labegg I’d be up for it if it is parents only.
A move right before high school is the perfect time. As for college, I have known a few people moved right after one finished high school… The student usually pays one year of out of state if they move to the parents new state. And then the parents have to prove they now live there full time to get instate for the next 3 or more years.
Congrats to all of you getting acceptances and merit offers.
We got another acceptance yesterday. However, we are waiting on two colleges that are top in her books but they don’t come out until Jan. I hate the stress! She applied to Yale too. However, knowing the acceptance rate is like 5% she is not holding out hope but wanted to try anyways. She has a back up so hopefully things will go smoothly with that.
@labegg I’ll have to remain cloaked I guess, since I’m one of the few left on Earth that’s not a member of FB.
@labegg I am open to some FB group participation.
Time for me to update S18’s college odds again, what with a couple more school visits/auditions under his belt, and some clarity as to where he has actually applied (and where he did not: sorry, Northwestern).
USCal-25%
Furman-20%
Vandy-10%
Miami(Fla)-10%
SMU-10%
Loyola-NO-10%
Field (UNC, Arizona St, Trinity, USCarolina, FSU, Fordham)-15%
I am open to FB group too.
@vistajay
I decided to try and make a math formula to figure out where S18 will end up. Undoubtedly I am wrong. But I multiplied his expected odds of admissions times chance it is affordable and then assumed he had a fully rational approach to deciding where to go with a clear rank order. (Talk about unrealistic! Plus I had to assume that I KNOW his rank order.!)
But just for kicks, this is what I wound up with.
USo Cal 25%
Richmond 24%
Trinity 15%
CMC 15%
Vanderbilt 15%
Stanford 6%
The others (field) don’t make the top 100% --rationally they should be eliminated.
@labegg The Facebook group is a great idea. I nominate you to set it up.
@labegg I’d be interested in a Facebook group.
FB sounds good to me.
@sushiritto I thought I was the only one not on social media! No FB, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat or anything for me. I waste enough time on the internet and playing puzzle games on my tablet (Wordscapes anyone?)…the last thing I need is another electronic diversion.
I am in for FB too.
I have to think Ithaca has moved up with the acceptance of its Park School of Communications. Since getting a grant to match the scholarship isn’t certain by any means (although the NPC I ran after we finished the CSS had him getting one). Also, my wife and I have reservations about the stress associated with a highly regarded program. He started one in high school, and he dropped out after a year and a half. A school where he just has to stay on track to graduate to keep a scholarship that amounts to almost half the cost of attandance, plus any institutional grant he may get, sounds good to us. It’s his decision, though. It’s looking like 60\40 McDaniel, but that could change quickly if the grant from Ithaca is big enough.
Don’t forget grant aid changes as need (EFC) changes.
Fun to imagine the possibilities for next year. My DD seems to be leaning towards these:
UTD 25% (NMF - stilltoapply Mcdermett)(dad’s choice)
Barnard (interviewed) 25%
Georgia tech 15%
USC (cal-interviewed) 15%
UCF (Disney world-spaceX-NMF) 10%
Brown-Columbia-Harvard-Yale-or Stanford 10% (if she gets in one…she will go taking on student debt as needed)
The reaches are her first choices, but it’s really hard to guess what chance she has for any of them. No one can possiblly know there…
Hard to pass on the NMF deals at UTD or UCF for working poor like we are.
