Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

thank you

If S went to a college just based on mailers, it would be Miami of OH or University of Oklahoma (he’s not applying to either).

Actually, he had only received mail from two of the colleges to which he applied before the applications were sent in (CO School of Mines and MIT). Now that he has applied, he has received actual real mail from Dartmouth, University of Wisconsin, and University of Michigan. Still nothing from seven of the schools. Lots of email from everyone, though.

I have to say Virginia Tech has been the best at communicating. They send email updates about a lot (application has been forwarded to Honors College, you qualify for this scholarship so please apply, don’t forget this deadline, etc.).

@IY266 Your welcome. Good luck!!

Wow congrats to our McDermott finalists and those I’m calling our soon-to-be finalists!! Awesome news guys!!

I’m sorry about the apparent snag with McGill @ShrimpBurrito but like everyone else, I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about.

Congrats to everyone else who has had great news to report! There’s been so much it’s hard to keep track!! <:-P

In our house nothing new on the college front but big changes afoot for the 1822 household. H has been offered a great opportunity both career wise and financially for the family, so after graduation this SoCal family is moving to Texas! (Plano to be precise) it’s obviously a huge change and a huge undertaking. Biggest challenge for me right now is figuring out the school situation for D22 who starts high school next year. It’s sort of a roller coaster on top of the roller coaster we were already riding! Slightly nausea inducing at this point!! :-& but I know we’ll make it through, it just may be a little bumpy. :-S

Congratulations @1822mom! We made the move from San Diego to Oklahoma 13 years ago. It was a big transition for sure, but we have no regrets. (Well, maybe a little, every August when it’s 107 degrees X_X ).

@1822mom - congrats! If you have to move your kid, you’re really at the best time. New school with lots of new kids transitioning in, too. Couldn’t ask for much more. Best of luck!

Congratulations all around! @1822mom, wow California is losing you guys! I’ve only been to Plano a couple of times, but it looks like a great town. I envy your soon-to-be easy access to great bbq and top shelf steak…! (and lower taxes, and cheaper gas, and more affordable real estate, and… :wink: )

Re: mailings, it’s definitely U Chicago with Miami Ohio a close second. Applying to neither. We didn’t receive any mailings from Dartmouth, so we feel left out in that regard.

That will be an adventure, @1822mom! Does that change any college decisions for you guys? Are California state schools on the list?

Oh that’s right @suzy100 - that changes the dynamic for in-state/OOS schools. How does that work?

@1822mom Welcome to Texas!

@1822mom Wow, SoCal to Plano, now there’s some potential culture shock. Congrats! And if you had to pick a good time to move, right before HS is perfect.

Just an FYI, for those that aren’t monitoring the Penn ED thread, ED decisions will be released 12/13 at 7:00 EST. My D didn’t ED to Penn, but one of her best friends did.

Oh I have a couple people I know who applied ED to Penn, too. Fingers crossed for ONE of them :wink:

Wow @ShrimpBurrito that stinks.

Wow @1822mom - that’s huge news! Congratulations!

@1822mom - congrats on the move! Exciting for sure, just the money savings alone would have me ecstatic. As natives, we love CA but everything is so stinking expensive here :((

Wondering how the change in residency affects your D18’s college decision!

@ShrimpBurrito You know, I was thinking about your D’s “deferral” at McGill and I was reminded of a quote from an older movie called “Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle.” Certainly not an Academy Award winner, but this line has stuck with me:

“In the end, the universe tends to unfold as it should.” I interpret it to mean that good things happen to good people.

In some ways, yes. But, in our SoCal —> OK experience, there were trade-offs. Good quality food is cheaper in CA, and more accessible. It’s cheaper to heat and cool your home in CA (one home we owned in CA didn’t even have a/c). Real estate is more expensive in CA, but you don’t need as much sheltered living space, as the weather often allows you to be outdoors.

Regardless, I’m happy for @1822mom and her people. It will be a grand adventure! A big culture shift like that adds greatly to the Life Experience pile.

Edit: Thanks @sushiritto >:D<

@1822mom Welcome to Texas. I hope you and your family will love it here.

Does anyone have information about merit at Ohio State and Indiana? Son was direct admit to both business schools. They are out of reach without some merit. He has gotten $9k from Indiana but applied through the SSA for more. He has applied for Eminance at Ohio State. Both are OOS for us so trying to get the costs down!

@MJDRZAL Congratultions to your son! I really wish all our kids could like your son and done with this process, so they could focus on and enjoy the here and now of Senior year.
