Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

I think D18’s HS got skunked on Stanford REA this year. It usually has one or two kids that get in. D18 hasn’t heard of any acceptances or even deferrals.

So far D’s school has “lots of rejections and 3 deferrals” quoting D. And her school typically gets several into S.

So D18 just left for an impromptu celebration at the home of a friend - he’s one of the lucky ones that got good news from Palo Alto today. Stellar student (perfect ACT, SAT, NMSF and likely Val) and hooked (legacy, talented musician, ethnic URM, full pay.) This is the first acceptance amongst D’s friends and there is finally a celebratory feel around here after so many months of hard work and joylessness. I’m realizing that the year will be a series of celebrations amongst her friends and families as the decisions roll in. So many of her friends have been with her since grade school and it’s just such a thrill to see their paths unfold. And I’ve got real mixed emotions at the realization they’ll all be leaving the nest soon. The clock Is ticking…

Sorry everyone who got bad news today. Hopefully the kids brush off and throw themselves into doing what they gotta do for the RD apps. The fact that they were even able to throw their hat into the ri g for Stanford means they are smart kids with lots to offer.

Rejection for my S, and his classmate.

Sorry to those hearing back from Stanford today. So many good students, but so few slots. Not sure many kids from S’18s HS applied. One friend knew she would be going a few weeks ago, but she’s a recruited athlete. So, not part of the normal pool.

@RoonilWazlib99 Congrats! A good friend of ours is a Harvey scholar at School of Mines (freshman). He is also a baseball player there and ended up being able to go full academic scholarship and not take the baseball money. I remember them saying that his SAT subject tests (800 Math 2) really helped him with the Harvey. Good luck!!

What @swtaffy904 is absolutely correct. The fact that your kids had the qualifications to give them a realistic shot at S is terrific. I hope your kids all know how amazing they are.

I’m sorry to hear about the Stanford disappointments. I hope your kids are not too upset and that they know they will be fine.

Congrats to @RoonilWazlib99’s S on the scholarship invite though, that’s super exciting!

My kid was not expecting to get in at all. I think his parents are maybe more disappointed, but we will move on now. Just scary how competitive it is! Hoping this isn’t harbinger of other rejections.

@bearcatfan - you asked about subsidized versus unsubsidized loans. For a subsidized loan, the interest does not start accruing until after the student is out of college. For an unsubsidized, it starts accruing right away.

I was thinking the same thing about what this means about competitiveness. Two of my daughter’s friends who applied ED to other schools have been rejected (Wellesley and Pomona). Guess we will see what the next few months bring.

Looks like D’s friend was the only kiddo from her school admitted (not including two recruited athletes) and a quite a few applied. Every year we hear the stories “Can you believe so-and-so didn’t get into ________.” Ever the pragmatist, D stated weeks ago she thought so many kids were overconfident and shooting too high. Naviance is used to gauge but it is skewed by recruited athletes and old stats as it includes 5-yr historical data. The importance of having a true safety can not be overstated. A school that is a sure-thing from an admissions standpoint but is also affordable and somewhere they’d want to go. Fingers crossed for our kiddos but competition is brutal at the elites. :((

Agree on competitive pool. For example, Georgia Tech posted via Twitter back in October after the EA deadline that they had over 17,700 EA apps this year, up 18% over last year, and more than applied for EA and RD COMBINED in 2013!

@Booajo – I was surprised how well D18 took the S rejection. No tears, no sadness, etc. Things will be very different if she gets rejected from her top choice: USC. Anyway, the next decision will be GT in early Jan. Then, hopefully, USC in late Jan. If not, this whole thing will drag out until April. Ugh.

My D gets Princeton on the 13th. She has already said that she is expecting deferral/rejection. Then we have UVA and UNC EA decision end of January.

Yesterday we were at Vandy and she liked it especially their Human Development and Organization major. Of course she has not applied yet and the merit scholarship deadline passed on Dec. 1. So I don’t know that us paying the full Vandy rate is really doable.

On the good news front she got a call yesterday notifying her that she received a local Martin Luther King Unity Scholarship award of $1,000. I didn’t even know she had applied. Sometime it just blows you away what these kids do.

@sushiritto The "no"s are always disappointing, but just remind her she can go 1-1000 and she’ll still win the league if that 1 is one she likes.

It’s hard to get them to change their head, but you can’t sell admits. You can’t go to Hawaii with admits (Unless it’s a U in Hawaii!) You can’t trade admits for bitcoin… Unused Admits won’t make you stronger, or taller…

The accept and reject letters all go in a box in the garage in Sept. with the Calc notes and APUSH paper and AYSO trophies not to be found again until you’re moving them into their first house…

We found it a really good idea, once the apps are in, to not obsess, or even really pay attention. Your kid is obsessing enough, there’s nothing you can do at that point, and it’s more useful to try to help them enjoy their last few months of HS (and not crash and burn their grades or just miss out on life 'cause they’re spending hours refreshing their portals.)

Sure, make sure they don’t miss deadlines for aid or whatever, but try to help them keep perspective. Oh, and save more money. It will always cost more than you think.

And lastly… parents should try to enjoy senior spring with their kid if they can too… It won’t be the same after June… sniffle sniffle…

Good luck all.

It is sad to hear the disappointments. Thinking of you all. It does seem that a lot of people got on the early app bandwagon.

@“Cariño” I have no horse in this super-selective race. But I don’t think it’s right to view non-admits as those that couldn’t hack it at that school. I don’t agree that AO’s know the best for your child; although they try very very hard, they represent the interests of the school - not the applicant - and there are only so many seats. Good luck to your D in UC.

DD got notified that she is “eligible” to apply for a particular scholarship at a school she hasn’t heard back from yet for admissions - it’s a minority scholarship that she clearly doesn’t qualify for, either through her grades or the scholarship’s intent (promoting diversity and cross cultural understanding).

The only way she’s promoted diversity is showing up for class, lol. (she’s one of a handful of Asian kids in her 1,000-plus high school). They must have used some kind of filter on the Common App … it would be nice to hear from this school for admissions purposes, but that won’t be until beginning of February. :-w

These Sanford Nos leave a pit in my stomach. I hope your kids recover quickly. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, or however the saying goes.

Anyone here with ED for Wellesley or Amherst?
