Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@1822mom Thanks, but D’s letter explicitly says “Since you applied for one or more of our talent-based scholarships in music, art, theatre, and/or forensics/debate, you will receive notification about scholarships and financial aid with the results of your talent scholarship application(s) in early spring.”

Ugh @daffodilpetunia bummer. :frowning:

@ShrimpBurrito Sounds gorgeous. I love the whole area and ferry system up there in the Northwest. We traveled around that “neighborhood” and loved it a couple years ago.

I guess my D is lucky that she followed in my late-teeth-eruption as she is nowhere near needing her wisdom teeth removed yet. Is there a “Grad School Confidential”? That’s probably when we will be looking at this.

Anyone else’s kid who was accepted ED have little to zero interest in studying for finals? My D struggled to find the motivation to study for her physics final that was today. The Vandy group chat was MUCH more appealing, apparently. How low can the grades drop before they boot you?

My odds -

99% Vanderbilt
1% Scottsdale Community College if she doesn’t maintain grades

Motivation for a lot of kids really changes in the second half of senior year. For a lot of kids, college choices are made at that point. Interest in classes fades. Though it cannot fade too much. Interest in EC’s also fades for a lot of kids. Some kids stick everything out through to the end. Just depends on the kid.

Wisdom Teeth removal here on Jan 3rd. — season to get them removed

@amominaz I guess that’s the one positive to take from D’s rejection from Stanford REA a couple weeks ago. She had to work hard all the way up until yesterday, when she heard from Michigan EA. Now finals are over. I don’t believe she’ll let off the gas until at least late March or April when we’ll hear from her tippy top reaches.

Odds are crazy speculation at this point, but…

99.75% University of Somewhere Here in CA or Elsewhere
0.25% McDonalds =))

Not ED @amominaz, but S has been very casual about school since he decided to be one-and-done at a super-safe college. He still has straight As but his attitude is a lot more relaxed. He does what he needs to for the A, and only goes above and beyond for the classes that really interest him the most. He even calculated out how low he could score on each final to still have an A for the semester, something he did not really do before this year.

I am so thankful that I stumbled upon the concept of “chasing merit” last year as we were beginning to tour colleges. I heard from so many people that DS “will definitely get scholarships with his grades and scores” to “no one gets academic scholarships anymore”. What I have found is that both are correct. #1 is true if you are willing to go to the schools that give big merit for high stats. #2 is true if you limit yourself to UT Austin and the like. Since my DS let me drive the college search and is very practical financially, he has found himself with the ability to get close to a full ride if he is willing to go to a lower ranked safety school that might not be his first choice, or compete for a chance at full tuition at his more preferred match schools. We knew for our family that finances were an important part of the equation, so he did not apply to any reaches (unless you consider the financial aspect, but even those had a chance at full tuition).

I don’t think I can play the odds game until February when we know about competitive scholarships. That’s when the list will most likely be cut in half.

As far as wisdom teeth go, my 2 children have always been “dentally challenged” and late to get teeth/lose teeth. They will be going through Wisdom teeth removal probably sometime in college.

School and finals ended today and we are looking forward to some downtime. DS will work and complete some local scholarship apps.

Thankful for all of you and I always look forward to catching up on posts each day.

So, S’18 is an evolutionary curiosity. He has no wisdom teeth and never will. The dentist said that happens sometimes.

@amominaz : Go Artichokes! (1%)

My older daughter saw the dentist and she needs an oral surgeon consultation because those wisdom teeth are starting to cause trouble. As an opera singer she is terrified to have the surgery because her roots are long and near the nerves. Plus scheduling has to work around summer festivals and spring recital. I’m nervous it will cause problems before she gets them done. The whole situation is nerve wracking.

As for odds :

Pitt 88%
Miami OH 3%
UDEL 3%
Rutgers 3%
UofSC 3%

Waiting on merit from Del and Rutgers ! I figure anything can happen. Miami is the wildcard. She really doesn’t want to go south but who knows.

Chiming in on wisdom teeth. My son got his out when his older brother did right before older brother left for college two years ago. My younger son was not too happy with me at the time but it was (mostly) just as easy to take care of two than one. I told him he would thank me later. I plan to collect that thank you tonight after showing him this thread.

He paid his enrollment deposit mid-November and he has kept straight As since then. He has a light schedule (for him) and quit his big EC this year so he has had a lot of free time. He has been pretty helpful around the house to compensate. I am sure he fears I will make him get a job. He has spent a lot of time with friends which has been nice to see too. They will all be different places next year and I think they all realize that now.

Wow, this thread is really jumping! Congratulations to those who received good news and hugs to those that need it until good news arrives for them as well.

S was focused on finals and he seemed quite locked in, so we avoided “distractions” until finals week was done (i.e. we didn’t check his results until recently). This was hard in some instances as emails came in and envelopes with giant “YES!” written on it started arriving in the mailbox. But now he’s on break and he opened up his EA results, a 5-1-1 count that left him with a big smile on his face. Lawrence, Puget Sound, Clark, Willamette, and Clark were the acceptances, Boston College was denial, and Santa Clara was the deferral (I can’t say I got my head around the last one yet). A year and a half ago, I would have only been able to place two of the schools that accepted him on the map, but now I know better, and he’s been fortunate enough to receive some merit from them as well. We’re girding ourselves for RD, but before that, we plan to celebrate over the holidays.

Happy holidays everyone!

Edit: Wooster should replace the second “Clark”…

Updated odds? I’ll play!

Franciscan is pretty much where S18 plans to go. It fits him and he says it feels right. I also believe it’s not coincidence the way things are falling into place for that school. We’re visiting mid January. Long drive from my southern state, but it’ll be time together and I want to see the place too.
He’s chasing local scholarships to knock down the remaining out of pocket total.

I would NOT have expected this back in August. Back then it was Furman all the way. S18 is not closing any doors, but he agrees the merit and financial aid from the other schools would have to be less than what’s on the table right now.

S18 picked schools with strong Catholic Campus Ministries. That was very important to him.

So current odds based on his interest:
Franciscan 90%
Furman 5%
Ga Tech 4%
College of Charleston 1%

Current odds based on financial feasibility:
Franciscan 95%
Ga Tech: unknown until acceptance/aid
College of Charleston: unknown until acceptance/aid
Furman: 5%

@dadotwoboys , I am also an evolutionary curiosity. I do not have wisdom teeth, and on one side I was missing 12-yr molars (top and bottom). Cue age 26, when something appeared on my dental X-rays that stumped the dentist. The verdict? My 12-yr molar on the top had formed and then erupted. I always joked that I was “teething” along with my son. So now I still don’t have wisdom teeth, and I’m missing the 12-yr molar still on my bottom left.

Apparently missing teeth are hereditary. I have cousins missing eye-teeth (expensive cosmetic work to fix). I’m hoping my kids miss out on the wisdom teeth like Mom, but this post has me thinking I should not have declined the X-rays on their last visit.

Lol, I have to admit I did a “hhmm, wow, ok!” @apraxiamom. Franciscan…I had him pegged for Furman. (FYI, I know next to nothing about Franciscan, but I am about to go look it up!)

That’s one of the things I love about following all of this college admissions stuff here on CC, sometimes you just never know what school a kid is going to fall in love with/pick. I have a school picked out in my head for just about everyone’s kid, btw! It is fun to see if I pick right, which I usually don’t, lol. I was about 50/50 for the Class of 2016, of course I didn’t even get my own kid right in 2016…

One last final (AP Calc AB) for DD2018 tomorrow and then the holiday break begins! It is a brief break as it will be interrupted late next week with regular school cheer practices for upcoming UIL and NCA cheer competitions in January.

I have been successfully ignoring wisdom teeth extractions for both of my kiddos! We have gotten conflicting opinions on the necessity to remove elder DD’s wisdom teeth. DD2018 has a serious needle phobia, that I keep hoping she will outgrow, so we are putting the extraction off for as long as possible!

Our recent exciting news, after 10 years since our last purchase, we bought a new car this week!
