@DiotimaDM wow that’s a lot to deal with! I’m so sorry. I find the kid driving thing terrifying. They’re so inexperienced.
And I’m so sorry about your sister’s strike, but I’m glad she is expected to make a full recovery. My husband, who is only 50 and who is very active and fit, had emergency heart surgery this summer so I understand how shocking that sort of thing is.
Just for future readers, how many applications did you put in? Last year I was always wondering how many applications should be made and asked several parents.
DD submitted ten and has one more with a latter deadline she may do.
Ten schools is all FAFSA allows - although there areworkaround for more that 10.
DD2018 - applied to 17 (far too many IMO), DD2016 - applied to 12 (still too many, IMO). Hindsight tells me not more than 10 would have been ideal for our family and it fits within FAFSA. Should have stuck to my guns with DD2018. I had originally targeted 10 but there always seemed to be an excuse to add another, she wasn’t auto admit, there was a fee waiver, its close to home and the list just grows and grows, lol.
We toured four, and planned to tour 3-5 more, but he liked two of the first four so well that he went two-and-done. Would have been one and done, but I insisted on the second one so he’d have a back up even though both were financial and auto-admit safeties.
DD submitted 7 - we actually visited them. That probably could have been trimmed to 5, but no harm done to cast her net a bit wider than it needed to be.
D18 applied to 8 schools-3 safety, 2 match, 3 reach (financial/admit or both $-). She visited 10 or 12 schools either formally or drive by. She had 2 more on her list that were dropped because she liked the schools she was already admitted to better, so why potentially take a spot you don’t want? I hope that D21 will have 6-8.
Originally planned to do 10, dropped one. Only 5 are turned in though. There are drafts of the other 4, but they aren’t due for another week! The one that was dropped isn’t even due until Feb 15.
S18 applied to 12. I would say two safeties, five reaches, and the rest matches or reachy matches. He is applying directly to engineering programs at a lot, so while some of his schools might seem like safeties to others, their engineering programs are top notch and quite difficult to get into.
He visited 7 of the 12 he applied to (plus MANY more visits to schools he was able to knock off his list). If he gets in to all five that he didn’t visit, he will go visit if they are still high on the list.

@toast18 D would have received less with her previous SAT score. When the new score was released, we asked for it to be taken into account for merit even though she had already been admitted.
@DiotimaDM - so sorry to hear about your son’s accident and your sister’s stroke. Glad to hear the S is OK and that your sister has a good chance of full recovery.
Wishing only good things for you and your family for the rest of 2018!!
