@Booajo – yep, the mid-50% for GT EA this year was ACT 32-35.
DD was rejected at GT.
ACT 35, SAT 1550, GPA 4.1, and 13 ap were out weighed by outofstate factor, 3.7 uw gpa, and last minute essays.
It’s onto UTD for DD, unless she changes mind for another national merit full ride school still taking applications.
@sekere62 sorry about GT but she’ll be in very good company at UTD:-)
I just read that UTD has a pop up farmer’s market on campus the second Tuesday of the month in the Spring semester. Just another check to put the “pro” column for UTD;-)
@sekere62 wow crazy numbers to get rejected. I’m sure she will find a great school that will allow her massive talents to shine.
Yes, so many talented OOS applicants denied to GTech. I wonder if the GA valedictorian/salutatorian decision to auto-admit had anything to do with this?
In general, institutional goals for admissions are really disheartening for many stellar kids. And for merit scholarships, most now have a need component. Very few straight merit opportunities anymore.
Sorry about those rejected today. Congratulations to those accepted though!
S18 and I made it to Pittsburgh and Ohio today. Roads were snowy but passable. There was a water main break on Friday and the college is closed and our original motel has no water. Luckily they allowed us to cancel without penalty.
It’s been wild so far.
Three friends applied to GT and two got accepted and the one that was rejected was the one with the higher stats and the perfect application… 35 ACT 4.8 w GPA. Leader for this and leader for that. and on and on… She has been completely taken back and in complete misery . She thought it was a given. It goes to show you how unpredictable this process is. Just can not assume anything and perhaps that is the lesson
@collegeisago Your post is spot on, this whole process is a crap shoot. I spent a lot of time talking with DD and her social group about how the outcome has nothing to do with them, its purely a numbers game and even then, its anybody’s guess.
In DD’s group - three applied to Berkeley - only one got in and he was not the “top” student of the three, however, he was well rounded but not perfect. He had good grades, not perfect, he had lots of variety in his EC’s as a participant, not a leader and he played a sport he loved. His test scores were good but again, not perfect. He’s at Berkeley and the Top in the class, the valedictorian, the higher ACT/SAT and a legacy, got a solid rejection.
Another was completely dejected over rejection at Stanford and Cornell, currently at Harvard and having the best experience ever!
Question: All State Music Conference commitment or Presidential Scholarship competition, with low probability in getting it anyway? I would go with commitment, but curious about opinions. Thank you!!
Today has been a real crappy day. Tomorrow must be better…
Woke up before dawn in anticipation of DD GT decision. This is a bell weather one for her, as GT pretty much is our predictor for the five lottery schools she tossed in for.
Before she got up to check, I was watching online as other kids came on with their GT decisions.
Then at 807 our time all everywhere phones went off. Thought another tsunami warning, but when checking the phone, saw the terrifying missile warning. Started yelling at wife and three kids to get up, grab valuables, and let’s run down the block to a sturdy new Target building. Our apartment is 40 years old and a strong gust could topple it.
Spent thity-eight minutes in terror, hiding out with a lot of our neighbors in the back of our local Target, only to be finally told it was a buttonpunch error.
When we got back home, DD finally awake, checked her GT status to see she was rejected. Bummer, as this sure makes those lottery tickets look a lot more worthless.
I do thank those on CC for all the UTD updates, which got me to push DD toward there, so she will have a college to go to next year…with no tsunami-missile warnings I hope.
@sekere62 – “and last minute essays”. This might have been a problem. Rumor has it that GT over-admitted last year and tightened up reviews this year. I believe they also switched to a new style of application review this year (derived from UPenn’s technique). It looks like the two biggest factors for rejection are OOS and choice of majors. For example, BME was difficult this year.
I can understand some of the GT EA decisions this year. I still can’t understand Stanford’s REA decisions this year. Every single kid around here was flat-out rejected.
@sekere62 That sounds really scary. I’m sorry about the rejection and I hope your D gets some wonderful news soon.
@apraxiamom What a wild start to your trip! Wishing you a comfortable stay and a successful visit for your S.
Do the math - how many applicants for how many spots and how many of those applicants look identical on paper.
The numbers are staggering. I really really hope all those rejected know its not them, their opportunities are elsewhere and in the end, they will be just fine.
@sekere62 saw your story on the news - The WRONG BUTTON!?! OMGosh, are you freaking kidding me, an oops! I cannot fathom those 30-40 minutes. A freaking button, just one? Isn’t there some sort of backup required. Sheesh…the wrong button…
While I was taking an afternoon nap S got bad news from Ithaca. The FA they offered was several thousand less than he needed, and a good bit less than the NPC had shown. We haven’t really had a chance to talk about it yet, but I heard him tell a friend of the family who asked if he knew where he’s going “it’s not official, but I pretty much know.” I’m sure he’s a little disappointed, but he seems ok with it.
I'm curious, what is the Penn technique?
Hugs going out to those who didn’t get the decisions hoped for - either for admission or financial aid. I really do get it here - affordability was always part of the equation.
S18 also denied at GT today.
OOS
35 ACT, 1550 SAT
3.95 UW average, full IB diploma
Eagle Scout
President of club related to major interest
Part-time job related to major interest
Over 400 hours of community service
Captain of varsity sports team
Etc etc
So far denied at Stanford and GT, which makes me think Dartmouth isn’t going to happen. Crossing my fingers he gets some good news from the seven schools he hasn’t heard from.
Wow these stats are crazy. What can these schools be looking for?
Tough on kids that worked so hard.
This from Stanford Daily
“A total of 1,318 high school seniors received letters of acceptance to Stanford’s Class of 2020 on Friday. An additional 745 early action students were accepted in December. The 2,063 admits came from a pool of 43,997 applicants, the largest in Stanford’s history” .Mar 25, 2016
Tidbit i picked up online:
For 2017 Georgia Tech received 32k apps, they admitted 7k and from what I’ve read they were way over admitted.
These numbers are staggering.
My theory, in a joking but also serious manner is, they scrape the cream off the top, the perfect scores, grades and EC’s then the darts come out and the randomness begins.
So sorry @sekere62 and @RoonilWazlib99 That’s scary for your kids that they got rejected. I hope their next news is a home run for them!
