Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

We have a financial aid package from current #1 school, merit could go up after honors weekend. I was selected for verification, so sent that in. I got that package alongside the request for verification.

A few schools, which DD has decided against, have asked for verification before sending any financial aid. Not sure I like that. I’m not sending verification anyway because there is no interest, but I don’t know why two schools can send packages before verification but these guys can’t/won’t. They sent merit with acceptances.

The last remaining schools I will likely hear something in the next week or so. And those guys I’ll have to send info into, since they are in the running. One school sent merit, and one is a black hole from which no information has escaped (including acceptance).

Free advice: Next year order those tax transcripts for you and your student in the summer to beat the rush. I ordered mine after I did the FAFSA in October. I beat the rush anyway, I guess, since now it’s taking a while to get them.

@sekere62 - S18 has the exact same scores as your daughter. His UW GPA is 3.95 if that matters. He also used the free Golden App (but added his common app essay in because it was already written and he thought it couldn’t hurt). I was under the impression Harvey was solely a stats cutoff for the invite. I might be tempted to contact them if she is serious and just ask about how the invites are sent because you know someone with the same stats as your daughter that was invited. It can’t hurt!

With his GPA and test scores, he qualified for the $14k/year scholarship already for auto aid. It seems your daughter would qualify as well as long as her GPA is up there. That brings tuition down to in state . . .

Am I the only one struggling to make spring break plans? I’d like to go somewhere warm and relaxing, but I’m still hoping S18 will get some scholarship invites, ugh

We made Feb break plans last April for this coming February not even thinking about scholarships or knowing how they all work. And now we are headed to Jamaica and of course there is a scholarship weekend that is the same weekend we are flying home.

If S is a Semifinalist, we will have him contact the committee and see if he can either interview via Skype or come the weekend before and maybe they will put him up with a student to see what campus is like.

DD’18 turns 18 today!

@glido Happy Birthday to your D! And congratulations to you for reaching this milestone!

@MACmiracle - thanks! But, she is our third and there is NO FINANCIAL WAY I am old enough to have 3 kids that are legal adults!

@glido :))

@glido - Laughing my FINANCIAL Butt Off! :))

@glido lol!!! I feel silly for not knowing that NFW meant No Financial Way. Oh well

Happy birthday to your D!

@swtaffy904 - I had no idea either. I don’t know what a lot of the college admissions acronyms on here are. I either skim/ignore those posts that use them because I have no idea what they’re talking about or try to puzzle it out based on context.

All of DD’s scholarships fall in March. Well she had one in Nov. but the rest are in March. If she gets selected for all 3 that will be three weeks she will have to miss 2 days of school. (All are across sountry). The last day of March starts spring break. Our issue is tickets for where we want to go have been $700 each. Normally they are around $400. Not gonna happen.

Yes @PlateauMama Several possibilities, all in March (1in April). And now I have the opportunity to take the family to Jamaica in late March (partially covered expenses by my job–not an every day thing for me.) I guess I’m just whining. He has one already first weekend of March which I’m happy for him to do, although it does involve flight. Others will be even further really.

Ok you guys remember when I said I was planting a seed in D’s brain that it’s not too late to apply to Trinity? I think she’s actually going to do it! :open_mouth: Last night we were having dinner with her grandparents chatting about her options and how she’s liking the ones closer to our new TX home. Suddenly she says "and actually I can still apply to Trinity. I think I’m going to do that next week. "

I think truly it’s all starting to feel real to her and she’s getting nervous so she wants more options. Just in case.

@1822mom my sister is a Trinity alum and absolutely loved it there. It’s a great school and San Antonio is such a fun city. I wish it were an option for either of my girls.

Woot … D18 accepted to GaTech EA today!

Congratulations to your D, @droppedit! Is that her #1 so far?

@suzy100 – it’s the highest ranked school for her so far. GT is notoriously difficult, so she’s a little intimidated by it. I think she would do fine. The main sticking point for her there is that all the degrees are BS and there’s not a ton of flexibility in the schedule. She’s in for Psychology … but I could see her adding on IA (I’ve heard that many GT IA grads go to the CIA/FBI/etc, something she’s expressed interest in previously). Regardless, this is a big door that just opened for her.

Congrats @droppedit
I was just reading the GT thread and it seems like even some really high stats were getting rejected.
