Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

D was accepted to Purdue today too!! Yay! I think this is where she will end up. Purdue cheer just won National Championship this weekend so hopefully she will make the cheer team and they are just as good next year!

Congrats on the Purdue acceptances @lovespink and @katstat1

They just called a Snow day (more than likely an ice day) for us here in central Texas. What’s not to love about a 4-day weekend. I suggested that maybe DS could work on local scholarship apps instead of playing Xbox…but he didn’t look like he was on board with that.

@burghdad - wow! That is so cool. Congratulations! Thank you for sharing that wonderful event honoring your daughter who demonstrated selflessness, initiative and grit. Way to go mom & dad.

@apraxiamom - congrats on being DONE! Wow, how exciting. It must be feeing real now for you!

Another four-day weekend over here like @S18D20mom. S’s school district is closed tomorrow, along with basically all the schools in the Houston area, due to forecast “wintry mix”.

@apraxiamom I’m so happy that your S found a perfect fit! Congratulations!

Our school district hasn’t announced if it will be closed or delayed yet. I hope for delayed because they won’t have to make that up but it will likely be closed meaning that they will have school on President’s Day. I have already planned a college visit for that day. DS18 can get it excused as a college visit but he’ll still be missing class but it will be unexcused for DS20:-(

@burghdad what a wonderful honor for your daughter. I know how proud you and your wife must be.

@lovespink @katstat1 congratulations on the the Purdue acceptances! I love catching up on all the great news.

@apraxiamom it sounds like everything aligned just as it should to help your son make such a great choice. Congratulations!

@apraxiamom, congrats on making a decision!

Just got informed were closed tomorrow too. I would like to see some snow but I don’t think it will stick. :frowning:

Just got the official school is closed on Tuesday email…

We’re supposed to get anywhere from 4 to 8" of snow tomorrow but no school closing yet. Our district doesn’t close for much; I think my D18 is hoping to get another day off to study for all her exams this week. Older D15 hates snow days because she’s been substitute teaching during college break and has made a lot of money…a snow day is a no pay day for her haha. Stay safe with all that ice and snow on the way!!

Congrats on those Purdue acceptances, fantastic college!! Definitely can’t go wrong there :).

@apraxiamom wonderful news! Must feel good to be totally done!

@apraxiamom wow great news. Welcome to you and your son to our part of the country. It sounds like a great fit for him.

@AmyBeth68 - Texas closes down for any ice or snow. People just don’t know how to drive in it and we don’t have the resources to clear or sand roads. It’s quite a joke to northerners who live here.

@s18D20mom That makes a lot of sense, if there’s no way to clear it then it’s truly a hazard, particularly for people that don’t have experience in it. We close for ice…but a minimal snow event they tend to have school then cancel after school events. I have a bunch of friends in Georgia, and they get ice a few times a year as well and there’s no choice but to shut down the schools. Good for the kids to get their fun long weekends :D.

Lots of schools here in OK will be closed tomorrow, including D18’s. No precipitation in the forecast, but wind chills will get down below zero, and the worry is with the under-dressed kids waiting at the bus stops.

Same here in Ohio, @ShrimpBurrito. We are already on a 2-hour delay.

I missed your post, @apraxiamom - congratulations! I know that’s a great feeling.

And congratulations on Purdue, @katstat1! As I said earlier, Purdue is a great school. Happy for you guys.

Ha! We are originally from Kansas. The first year here in North Texas school closed several days. My husband says “when someone finds snow in the dictionary they close the schools!” Not too many the last few years though.

I’ve been very impressed with how quickly Ohio and PA clear roads up here. And the citizens drive through the snow and go on with their day. In Savannah, one snowflake shuts the city and schools for days.

There are some fun maps that show how much snow or cold closes school in different parts of the country. Here in Wisconsin, wind chill of below -30 is the rule. Anything warmer, open! Snow usually need 6+ inches for closure or delay. My work never closes anyway.
