Nobody wants to get bad news, or see it for others. Sorry to those hearing what they don’t want to.
Lots of stress for parents at our house while we wait out scholarship decisions. Ready to make some decisions.

Feeling ya, @Booajo. This is not a fun week!
We had a real nice family dinner. DD doing better.
As we all know there is something that is meant to be for each kid. It is just hard as a parent to watch a kid hurt when they have worked so hard.
Thanks to all of you on this site for your condolences
I only recently started checking the forum again. familiar names, all of you are still going strong! sorry to hear the UVA news @burghdad @MPT3D and @KAMmom. While looking at your posts I screamed to my DD from downstairs, UVA results came, she said, I know my friend got in( class Sal, 34 ACT, few regular EC’s, smart , hardworking) I screamed back what about you? she replied, I applied RA, I didn’t ask further. I don’t know a whole lot what UVA looks for but I know this friend of DD’s didn’t get in Dartmouth ED, she was willing to pay full.
Sorry about the UVA news @burghdad , @MPT3D , and @KAMmom . I always heard that UVA was very tough OOS. It’s a popular place for kids to apply at S’18 HS and many get rejected or deferred.
Feeling a little guilty to share somewhat brighter news, S’18 found out today that he was accepted at FSU. So, he will be going to college someplace, for sure. He’s pretty happy and pretty relieved to receive his first acceptance. They reminded him that he will receive the Benaquisto Scholarship once (if) he is named NMF. That’s a very good thing.
Very good thing indeed, @dadotwoboys! We need some good news around here!
Congratulations @dadotwoboys !
I agree about some good news being welcome - congratulation @dadotwoboys!
My D also got accepted to FSU today. Happy to see her get the full OOS tuition waiver which makes it a possibility. She was also eligible for a “Freshman Scholarship” but apparently FSU decided today that they are only offering it to instate applicants this year largely do to record application volumes. I have been touting FSU as outdoing Bama with merit for OOS but they just took a step back, but still good. Just sharing in case anyone OOS considers in the future.
I am sorry for the disappointments today @burghdad, @MPT3D and @KAMmom. The heart wants what it wants, it hard to hear when things do not work out in their favor.
Clemson seems to have captured my DD’s heart (for the moment anyway), I am hoping her luck holds out until February 15.
My DD was accepted at FSU today as well.
FSU was more exciting for me than DD I think. Her stats placed her squarely in the 50% (nationally) and in comparison to those who have applied from her school in the 25% and then compounding things, there have been no acceptances from her school in the last 3 years, out of 8 applicants. It was hard to know whether to trust she had a decent shot by national average or very little by her school average. I was eager to see the results today and was pleasantly surprised to see she made the cut. For our particular school, I am slowing coming to the conclusion to trust the national stat ranges more than school’s stat ranges as a predictability gauge. Of course my family is not targeting super selective schools, so my observations are skewed to the USNWR #50 - #125ish range and obviously to our particular High School and kids with similar stats to my own. (So basically pointless and irrelevant, lol)
FSU was originally pretty high on DD’s list but I think practicality over took DD and she placed it out of her mind as a long shot. I am not sure if she will rewarm to it or not.
S18 got invited to interview for the Powell Scholars at university of the Pacific. Not his first choice school but could be a good option if he gets the scholarship. Very proud! Now we are just hoping for a white box from USC. Several with lower stats got one in other parts of the country so that isn’t a good sign. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
Sorry for the disappointing news several of you got. This really is a tough process with so many amazing kids.
And on another positive note, CC just told me congratulations, I have been promoted to Junior Member. Lol!
@burghdad - sending hugs - that’s just crazy. All will be well in just a few months. Hang in there.
@burghdad, I want to echo everyone’s thoughts. I feel your pain. It stinks seeing your child be passed over. I have been there more times than not with S18. You and your family are not alone. You go over what you could have “made” them done differently in the previous 3 1/2 years. So many why or what ifs.
Honestly, there is no answer to tell us why our child was not given an acceptance. They just were and now it’s time for lemonade. Not saying that whatever schools they were accepted to are bad. I am saying these kids had their heart set on the one(s) that didn’t “want” them. It stings. A lot.
Our kids and we need time to grieve for the school that should have been, But, I do fully believe that they will love and thrive in the one they will ultimately choose to attend. The best is yet to come.
To those with recent acceptances, Congrats!
Oh so sorry for the UVA bad news @burghdad , @MPT3D @KAMmom. Such a downer for these bright kids. Virtual hugs!
@burghdad I am so sorry for your daughter’s disappointment. She has some other wonderful options and I am sure she will thrive wherever she ends up. Sending hugs to both of you.
USC’s merit scholarship notification process is … disappointing. First, on Tue they sent notifications by physical mail. Then they updated the online portals starting at midnight PT last night … except that they didn’t, at least for D18. Almost five hours later, she still doesn’t have an updated portal. Her friend’s updated at 5am ET.
There is no logical explanation for this. Updating online records takes seconds (or minutes) at most. USC needs to ask GT how to do things. Every one of the 15K GT EA folks got their status update at exactly the same time, noon ET.
@droppedit I really don’t like USC’s process, either. Seems rather disorganized.
D did get an email this morning–no scholarship for her. She’s a little frustrated–she wants answers so that she knows what she has to work with to make her final decision. I know, she’s not the only one.
No updates here yet for USC. Assuming that means no. Too bad, it had moved up to top 2 for S18.
Pretty sure this is going to be a bad day as I also believe he will find out he was not selected for Richmond scholars. Time to start looking harder at some options he has in hand as I’m guessing this is not good news for other highly competitive scholarship schools he’s applied to either.
