Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@chattchia for Calculus they could take Honors Pre-Calc Trig which would allow them to take AP Calc AB. But my daughter wanted the higher level Calc BC so she had to do a half year of Honors Calc A and the other half of that year was a required C++ computer science class. So essentially in order to take AP English for Jr/Sr year you have to get a B or higher in Honors English, etc. That works for all the sciences and history as well.

@AmyBeth68 We have that same honors first rule but it only applies to science courses. Highest tract Freshmen take Honors Physics and as sophomores AP Physics and Honors Chem with their Precalc. So Junior year it gets crazy with some kids taking AP Chem AP Calc AP English and AP World History plus others along with their honors Biology

Doesn’t leave much time for being a kid.

You guys are soooo behind on the prom thing. My D bought her dress in December! ;))

“But my concern was that if a college sees she took 5 AP classes and only sees 4 AP scores reported, they might just assume that she bombed the 5th and chose not to report it.”

My D had 5 or 6 AP scores. She reported all but one and so far so good on admissions. I don’t have any idea if those had any weight though.

Not.ready.for.prom.dress.shopping.

Wow @JerseyParents that’s pretty intense. Our honors kids track with Honors Bio, Honors Chem, Honors Physics (some now double up this year with AP Bio or AP Chem) but most don’t because they are already doubling on math Junior year to get to Calc BC. Soooo…they usually only get one AP Science unless they choose to double (a few of my daughter’s friends are doubling up on AP sciences senior year). But it holds true for English. First two years Honors, second two years AP and so forth. History is a bit different as they do allow an AP history class Freshman year.

Glad my DS doesn’t need a dress…

He is not the least bit interested in even going to prom…

Re: Prom - D is not 100% she is going, she generally goes to region in track and it is the same date. But she has a dress, she will just wear the homecoming court dress we bought in the fall.

Re: Sending AP scores - D attends a school that is on not on the radar for AOs at selective schools. We felt it was necessary to indicate the scores attained for her junior year APs to validate the high grades. If you go to a top HS, probably not necessary at all, AOs will know the honors/AP classes are rigorous.

DD won’t be buying a prom dress. We’ll go the Rent the Runway route again, just like last year. Same price as buying a dress but you get to wear a high-end $1,000 dress instead, and with one less thing in your closet to take up space.

no prom here, the GF is in college OOS.

So on another note, is it normal for RD schools to ask for mid year grades? This is for a school that was only applied to as RD.

@ChattaChia, yes. All of D’s RD schools want you (really the GC) to send in a mid-year report.

@ShrimpBurrito My daughter bought hers over Christmas vacation, too! She managed to pick one out, chipmunk cheeks and all …

Now if she could find a date. The boys in her class are either involved with someone or don’t want to go, even as friends. And going in a group is Just. Not. Done.

D only has two schools that haven’t requested mid-year reports - Trinity U and Cal Poly SLO. The other 11 were Common App and they all downloaded the report.

As neither D nor I are big shoppers, we didn’t actively go looking for a prom dress. D’s friend was willing to sell her expensive, once-worn dress for 1/4 the selling price. It fit D perfectly, so we bought it. We were both relieved to have that task taken care of so painlessly!

After buying the dress, D promptly told her BF that they are going to prom. “Okay,” he said. So much for the promposal, lol. (And why didn’t my phone try to autocorrect “promposal”?! Is that a legitimate word now??) We parents are all crossing our fingers, hoping they don’t break up before then!

S is probably not going to the prom. He didn’t enjoy himself at homecoming, and his friend group is more coupled-up now than they were in the fall so S would be one of only two going without a date. I know he doesn’t currently have any crushes on any girls, but I asked him if he wanted to arrange to go as friends with one of his female friends. Turns out his female friends all have boyfriends. I’m sure he’d be interested in prom if he’d actually enjoyed homecoming in the fall but between that and being the odd one out with no date he is probably going to skip it.

DS has never had a girlfriend or been on a real date. He is what I would describe as a late bloomer in that aspect. There have been a couple of girls that he has “talked” to or “gone out” with in a group but nothing serious. Most of his friends who are girls have boyfriends. He did say that he is interested in going but doesn’t know who he will ask. Of course the promposals here get really elaborate so there is that pressure too. Prom is April 21 so I let him know that if he plans to go he needs to not procrastinate as there is a lot of planning involved and the girl will want time to find a dress. I do hope he will experience prom but I’m sure it might be awkward. Of course I know who would be perfect for him to take but if I dare say her name it will kill that chance.

Prom here is only for juniors. So unless he gets a girlfriend (laugh–zero expectations of that!) no prom for us.

I guess I’m confused–are people sending official AP score reports to all their schools, or just self-reporting? I’m sure my S18 self-reported on common app. No way would I pay to send official scores except to the one school he attends. At his school, most kids do not take AP tests. They are expensive and district is poor. I think he’s taken 5 and has 3 maybe now? All scores 4 or 5, so confirm his grades and standardized tests.

I actually offered to send DD to Disneyworld for Prom instead. We are sitting on an unused park ticket from a few years ago and a fair number of disney dollar rewards on our Chase “Disney” Visa. It would end up costing about the same as Prom in the end. She did the whole prom thing last year with her then senior BF. Ultimately her best friend since pre-school said “but I have always envisioned us doing senior Prom together” and the lure of a pretty dress won out!I

@Booajo -self reported AP scores for us!

(visiting from 2019 thread) my kid is set on doing the duct tape prom dress scholarship challenge next year. $10k scholarships for the winning design, it’s worth a bit of effort on his part. He’s already started building it on my mannequin. He just has to convince his date to wear his design, and hope she doesn’t gain a lot of weight between this year and next.
