Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

I don’t totally understand all the AP stuff. My D is taking AP Lit and Comp this year. I was just checking on what that would count for at Purdue and it doesn’t count for the Intro to Comp class she is supposed to take. It says that there is an AP Language and Comp that would be the equivalent. So can she take an AP test that she really isn’t taking a class for? Wondering what the differences are? Obviously one is Lang and one is Lit, but its the comp part that she is hoping to test out of. Any advice?

@katstat1 HS students can take any of the AP tests they want, even if they didn’t take the associated AP class at their HS. Some study on their own and take the exams in order to enhance their applications and/or get additional college credit. Obviously a pretty challenging thing to do and not for faint of heart.

Sounds like you have found the Purdue AP chart and can see the Purdue course number your D would get credit for if she gets a high enough score on that particular exam. Then it is a matter of whether that particular course is one that is required for her major or not. If not she still gets credit but it is essentially an elective that doesn’t count toward her degree.

DS took AP English Language his junior year and then took the exam. He did not take AP English Literature this year, but instead took a dual credit English class. Content of two are very different I think. AP Eng Lit is definitely more of a literature class than a writing class I believe. I know at Louisville the credit for AP English Lit fulfills a humanities requirement rather than a English/writing requirement.

Hope that helps a little.

Well, I put our snow day to good use and was able to get caught up on this thread. Wonderful news on acceptances and decisions made. I can imagine how happy everyone is to move on in their planning. I’m sorry to read about the students who did not progress in their scholarship opportunities. I can only imagine how much work went in to that process.

We are waiting on NYU/Tisch and Fordham/Ailey decisions and Elon for financials. She loves the Rutgers/Mason-Gross acceptance and was thrilled when she was nominated to Rutger’s Honors College and received their 2nd highest scholarship. That made their OOS program really affordable. I honestly cannot imagine that even if she gets in to NYU or Fordham that the cost will be comparable.

Rutgers Honors College comes with so many perks. I had to do a lot of research because it was not on our radar, at all. She is on their accepted students facebook page and girls are making contact regarding the dorms. She has to live in the Honors College dorm for freshman year and it is new and lovely. We are going for their showcase day on March 16th and will hopefully get a lot of information and really understand the added responsibilities and benefits.

AP Lang is a writing and composition class. AP Lit is a literature class. They are completely different. Usually AP Lang is taken junior year and AP Lit is an option for senior year. I think it would very difficult to score well on the AP Lang test without the class. It’s different than self studying for a science or math AP in that the student needs to learn how to write the essays and, without guidance from a class and a teacher making corrections to the student’s practice tests, that student won’t know how to write the essays. Also, the multiple choice questions are analyzing all kinds of writing not just literature. It’s more like the SAT reading section on steroids.

Love seeing more schools as profile pictures!

In the airport ready to board our flight to Accepted College Weekend #2.

Very excited this location is down south as we had a second nor’easter here in a week last night… 8 inches of snow and no electricity over night/this morning!

Weather alone this one may get my vote!

How many “accepted students” programs will you all attend? Anyone putting a cap on it? Top 3, etc?

@amom2girls I think 3 accepted visits max and hopefully just top two. Looking at S18’s prospects, I can’t see more than a 3 way tie no matter which way the decisions fall. I just hope the dates don’t conflict. Most of his have not put out exact dates yet.

That’s a good question @amom2girls. When we went through the revisit process for boarding school applications, I made my kids choose no more than 3 schools to revisit. But the schools were relatively close to home for the most part so it wasn’t such a big deal. Now DD has applied to colleges all over the country as well as the UK, many of which she hasn’t seen or has only visited in the summer. She will need to revisit before making a final decision, but it will be a logistical nightmare even getting her to three (not to mention $$$). We have decided that, with 10 out of 14 schools still to hear from, we will need to wait until the end of the month to really make a determination. Even if she receives 12 acceptances (not going to happen), I can only see her seriously considering three. Also, I think that spending more time at fewer schools - overnights, attending classes, etc. - will be more worthwhile than spending less time at more schools. To @MinnieFan 's point above, warm-weather schools will be a high priority for me

I don’t know if we will do more than 3 re-visits. Our information remains so so incomplete at this point, and spring sports are now starting up which basically suck up almost every weekend. It seems like April is going to be a potential disaster.

Or maybe not–maybe it will all become crystal clear once we have the cards on the table.

@Booajo Yes. Same here. April crazy busy. We’ve got one re-visit/accepted students day scheduled (actually over 4 days w/ flights!), and that was in between key senior meetings, prom, track meets my D doesn’t want to miss. This may be IT, but if she happens to get into 1 or all of the 4 reachy schools we’ve still to hear from… I just don’t know how/where to fit another East Coast/Midwest visit in… Hoping for acceptances, but also hoping for some clarity even more!!

I think that our clarity is going to come in the form of 1) April 1st decisions and 2) financial aid letters. There is so much to look at because she is going for a BFA in dance. So, we’ve been to each college for their auditions. NYU and Fordham are such a reach with how many dancers they accept that we are have only toured their dance facility. Will wait on a general tour IF she gets in and IF there is any money.

She really loved Elon and we have been down there twice for a total of 6 days, so lots of time spent. She even did an overnight after their audition with a friend in the dance BFA, so she’s seen the social part of school;) They are probably too far (8 hour drive) to go for a third visit.

Really hoping she loves the Honors College at Rutgers. They have such a strong, student focused dance program. As a mom, I really appreciate how they are set up.

And, yes, April and May are so busy with senior events and dance commitments. She has something on almost every weekend.

We will not be attending accepted students day as its only a month before she has to fly out for Honors Orientation

All of you off to Accepted Students Day - Hope y’all have a great time

Regarding the AP Lang test, if your student does well on the verbal SAT then they should be able to do ok. My DS (vSAT 720) took the test in the 11th grade after he wasn’t able to take the course. I bought him the Baron’s prep book that he read through but didn’t study extensively and he made a 5. He said it was very similar to the SAT. I felt it was worth the fee to possibly get credit for 3 - 6 hours of English comp.

Finally some good news! My son was selected to the Lindner Honors Plus Program at University of Cincinnati College of Business, a five year full tuition program with several co-ops built into the program.

We are planning to visit the top 3 schools during spring break. If they happen to match up to an accepted student day, that will be nice! But we are going to be buying airline tickets last minute as there isn’t much time between the last decision and spring break.

That’s a great program, @gclsports. Congratulations to your son!

Wow DD had a good day for scholarships!

DD notified she got $4000 Macy’s scholarship for national merit.

Also DD progresses in a big scholarship to the next level, a trip across the country to interview in person. We were on pins and needles with this one as there was a very intensive background check involved. So not disclosing what it is… Getting this scholarship gets USC (or one of those March 28th schools) paid for. Lucky for DD calling your physics instructor a ■■■■■ is not disqualifying in the background checks.

Earlier this week DD got $400 from Elks, which was also greatly appreciated.

Gclsports Wow that is great news and U Cinn co-op program is great. Congratulations to you son…

Daughter admitted to 2 schools Clemson and Delaware. Going to Delaware tonight for Distinguished scholars Weekend which has the potential for a full ride plus books and 2500 stipend. In early April going to Clemson for admitted honors college visit.

Still waiting on the 3 lottery picks on March 28. If she would happen to get into one of those then we would go visit. But I am expecting the decision to be between Clemson and Delaware. Which quite frankly is much better for us financially.

Le sigh…I know DD has already moved on, but the wait to hear from “The School That Shall Not Be Named” whose decision window is March 1-15 (and they haven’t released any decisions yet…) is driving ME to distraction! DD could not care less at this point, which is bizarre to me because it was her first choice for so long. It’s the last decision and I need some closure, lol!
