Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

@melvin123 Thank you and meant to say S18 not D18 lol.

wrong board… but while I am here…sorry to hear about dang competitive scholarship news.

@S18D20mom - our daughter is the same way. Great stats but not great enough for merit scholarships that aren’t institutional stats - driven. She doesn’t really seem to be bothered. My friend said “of course she isn’t. She on the Dad and Mom checkbook scholarship program”. That’s probably not far from the truth!!

Does any one know about Clark summer research at UTD

@amominaz, my D18 stats are: 35 ACT, 4.0 unweighted GPA, ECs, number 1 in her class, she was NMSF at the time of application and was waiting to hear if she was a finalist (which we heard she was NMF in February). She only applied to 2 colleges and really only wanted to go to U of Cinci but also applied to Ohio State as a backup. U Cinci initially only offered her $3500 per year, We were surprised. And Ohio State only offered $4k per year based on stats. But then when she found out she was NMF, U Cinci gave her the Excellence scholarship, so that bumped up the award to full tuition and room all 4 years. If it hadn’t been for NMF, she would have only gotten $3500 per year. I thought it would be more. But I guess there a so many qualified students like her. U Cinci did just send her a separate award last week, too, for Engineering that is a one time only freshman year for $6k so watch your mail, there may be more awards coming! She also has an outside scholarship of $2.5k she applied for and just got notified last week she was awarded.

I woke up this morning and realized that in one week the rest of S’s decisions will be released. (Are any schools still sticking with the April 1st date, or will it be over for everyone on the 28th?)

He has some great options already so we are both just ready to have all of his choices on the table, make a flurry of visits, and finally make a decision. This has been a long, long process.

Good luck to everyone!!

@AmyBeth68 I think you might be getting hit with snow later today. Take care!

@worrymom @3scoutsmom’s outstanding son has been accepted into UTD’s Clark’s summer research program.

@shelleee I’m shocked that your D was not offered more and can only guess that they knew she would be NMF from her application. Or maybe the first merit scholarships given are automatic amounts? U Cinci is a great school, but still, she is at the very high end of applicants - for any school.

I can commiserate on the competitive scholarships, my daughter has had no luck at all. Thankful for the auto merit based on stats, but we’re still trying to work out if her top choice is financially viable. Hoping some of the outside scholarships come through but thus far they haven’t. There is just so much academic talent out there, it’s truly stunning.

@MACmiracle it’s already snowing! What a wild weather ride we’ve had. How much snow are you getting today? I don’t want to push the year too fast but I’m ready to see grass and green trees.

D18 deposit paid at Clemson!

@AmyBeth68 8-12 inches are predicted here. How about you?

I woke up feeling out of sorts because of the competitive scholarship situation. Before bed, D said she doesn’t dislike the remaining colleges, she just really doesn’t want to go to a big school. So then I started thinking about schools with rolling admission that she could apply to now, but that’s not really going to help with the finances and none of them would offer a better education.

Here in the burgh we will probably end up with 7 inches (5 on the ground now). Schools closed.

@macmiracle those are 2 nice options for your daughter. Good luck to her making her final decision.

@AmyBeth68 as everyone has stated greek life is so different at each school. Even at the different schools greek life has changed since many of us attended.

For example when I went to Lafayette College in 1977 I had no intention to ever join a Frat. But at that time the school didn’t have enough dorms and places to eat so you had to join a fraternity. At that time the school had 1500 men and 17 fraternities. Our room and board was through the fraternity as such about 85% of the men belonged to a frat. I can say that most of my best friends and guys that I still stay in touch with from college were my fraternity brothers.

However, Lafayette like many LAC has really taken pains to get rid of greek life (especially the fraternities) and the problems they can bring such as hazing, drinking etc. It built dorms and dining halls and systematically shut down the fraternities and in many instances turned the houses into classrooms and in some cases sororities. In fact my old house is now a sorority house. There are now only about 4 fraternities left and only about 30% of the men belong.

I was surprised to see that Clemson has the woman who are interested in rushing come a week early before move in day to complete rush as the trend at a lot of schools is to push rush back into the second semester. In looking at the registration form, the girls have to submit their HS transcripts and generally need a minimum of a 3.0. They also need a recommendation letter from an alumna of that sorority (doesn’t need to be a Clemson chapter but still…). My daughter has no interest in sorority so this is not an issue, but I still found it interesting.

Wow, thank you to all of you that shared so much about Greek Life. I had no idea of the cost involved either.
DD found out that she got denied at Tulane earlier this week. So now only waiting on NYU which is her top choice at the moment. Going to visit BU( 0 merit) and Fordham( 25 K ) for accepted student days next month for the first time. I feel like I was a bit negligent about visiting school prior to her applications We only visited 4/9 schools where she applied. The funny thing about it is she got into 3 schools that we never visited. Starting to really hit home about schools being a big business.

@MACmiracle I’m sorry the competitive scholarships didn’t work out. I’m sure your D put a lot of time and effort into it. I hope that these competitions helped her learn more about herself and that she was able to have some positive take-away for all her hard work. You must be very proud of her. About her school choices being too big, she can make her school feel a lot smaller by joining or building smaller communities within the school. For your D, I’m sure she already thought of the Newman Center as a good place to start. When I went to a big university I had a popular (big) major, but I minored in a language and that department was small. I really made my connections with the faculty through my minor, and they then helped me with advising for my major. Also have your D get from campus life a list of clubs, so she can think of what else she’d like to join. Good luck with all the snow today!

@“Worry Mom” About the Clark summer research program at UTD, they are expanding the program this year and hope to accept up to 80 students. Students are placed in research groups by majors. I believe the program covers room, board and fees and I’ve heard unofficially a $500 stipend for personal expenses.

Students will work in their research group during the school day and there will be various optional social activities on the weekends.

Move in date is June 3rd but if this is prior to your high school graduation you can get permision to start at a later date. They will be making an effort to keep kids in the same dorm room for the Fall so there’s no need to move out at the end of the summer. The program ends Aug. 4th Honors Orientation is on Aug 15th so the kids get a bit of a break.

I’ve spoken to students that did this program last summer and they loved it and learned a lot from it. It looks good on a CV and gives the students a chance to get to know thier professors.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

@burghdad , I had a similar fraternity experience at W&L in the 80s. There were 18 fraternities for about 1000 men. percentage of participation was in the high 80s. I too have many friends from that experience that I keep in touch with, and I find that we are actually becoming closer again as our kids leave the nest and we have more time to travel and visit each other.
While fraternities at W&L have certainly changed, its not nearly as drastic as at your alma mater. There are 13 national fraternities, and 74% of male students join them. There are also 8 sororities, with 76% participation. The school though is moving to keep more students living in campus housing, recently requiring that all freshmen, sophomores and juniors reside in university housing.

@melvin123 Thank you for all your kind words. Even though Rowan has a large student population, the class sizes are super small and I don’t think they have TAs teach classes. And if she gets into honors and lives in honors housing that will have a small community feel, I’m sure.

TCNJ also has small classes, no TAs, and she’s already in for honors. So, as far as big schools go, she couldn’t be in a better situation.

Both have active Catholic clubs and orchestras.

If she didn’t get the concussion, things may have been different. But maybe not. Most of her apps were submitted when she had the worst post-concussive symptoms.

Just got word that DS was voted most likely to change the world for his class. Pressure is on now! :))

Hotwire sent me a discount coupon last night, so I used it to make the hotel booking to take S to UNM. In August. To start school. To not come home again until probably Thanksgiving.

Waaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!
