Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

^^^^^good idea
I know my DD preferred for me to check the portal first and tell her, she did not want to read it herself. She did a twitter thred of her opening her physically mailed acceptances for fun (but for 95% of them she already knew the result from checking the portal).

S18 rejected at UCB. He seems fine and I don’t think it was a front runner. Two more left and then we are done!

@droppedit - your D18 has great set of schools to choose from. Mine has no idea about her final pick. Hope all the kiddos decide soon so we can enjoy the last few months them being at home.

Btw is Stanford our? I thought they are coming out tomorrow.

My D isn’t opening her decisions either! At least not the one from tonight. It makes me laugh. Pretty sure she’d choose the EA school over the rest anyway, but she’s so different from me - I couldn’t stand it either way!

Big congratulations going out to those who have received welcome news, and big hugs to those who are in the opposite camp. Disappointment is understandable and hard. In some ways we are living in First World Problems Land, but that land is real for out kids. It hurts to get rejected - I don’t know of any circumstance in life where it doesn’t. And it hurts for the parents too. As I said to a friend tonight, we can suffer with them, but we can’t suffer for them.

My hope for all is that once the dust settles, and the kids get used to the options before them, they see nothing but opportunity and adventure in their futures.

@suzy100 - so true what you said ‘we can suffer with them, but we can’t suffer for them ‘

We’ve finally got all the results too. But it’s going to be hard to S18 to decide. So more stress to come next month.

So. Glad. This. Is. Finally. Over.

On to S20, with many lessons learned.

Final results for daughter:

Final results for DS Accepted Georgetown (RD, SFS), UVA (EA, Undeclared Major), UNC-CH (EA, undecided major), William and Mary (Monroe RD undeclared major) and U South Carolina HC (undeclared major). Waiting on financial aid from Georgetown because it makes a huge difference. Need to do admitted students days too. Not enough time to get them all in, unfortunately. No rejections or w/l.

@msatoor – D18 was rejected from Stanford REA back in Dec. I don’t know when RD comes out for them.

Looks like D is going to Bama. She set them as her first choice for NMF tonight and that scholarship frees up tons of funds for other things. It’s really quite staggering. She was checking out their various “summer abroad” options (relatively short trips for credit) for years 2-4 and there was a cultural one to Italy in May and archeological one to Greece in July. I said, “do both!”. **She could do more than five of them every single year for the difference in tuition alone compared to USC/b. Wow.

@gclsports your S and my D applied to 7 of the same schools!

@adjaclaw That’s funny there would be so much overlap. Good luck to your S!

All decisions are in for my son-
Accepted: American ($20K merit, Scholars), George Washington ($25K merit), Northeastern ($16K merit), Pitt (full tuition, Honors), UC Irvine, UCLA, UCSD, University of Maryland CP (Honors, $12K merit), UMN (Honors, $10K merit) and a few others that were EA safeties that came off the table early.
Waitlisted: NYU
Denied: Cal, Columbia (ED)

I am not sure what he’ll choose, but am happy to finally be at this stage! Thanks to all posters for sharing their story and this journey so far. I wish you all the best on remaining acceptances and decisions!!

Congratulations on all of the acceptances and decisions and relief at it being over. Hugs and wine for those of you dealing with disappointment. It will all work out in the end. @AmyBeth68 I’m sorry Pitt didn’t show any more love in the way of merit…but I’m glad that your daughter is so happy with her decision. I bet they will recognize that passion and maybe reward her with more scholarships in the future.

UTD visit today went well. We spent 3 hours on campus and we were able to talk with someone from the honors college and see everything. Liked the modern buildings, the dorms, the feeling that they promote student success through opportunities. Nothing bad to say about the school at all but it just is not the right fit for DS. We are glad we came and saw and it will be hard to pass up their merit offer…we will be declining and hope that someone else will get his AES funds and spot in CV Honors. I got myself a UTD shirt (I went to grad school there 25 years ago) and we had a fun lunch at Twisted Root. DS got the “Freshman 15” which is burger topped with smashed fries, bacon, and fried egg. I got a burger and a Salted Caramel Milkshake. We were able to discuss remaining college options without interruption and even talk about prom (which he is leaning toward going and asking a girl friend). Prom is 3 weeks from Saturday. I told him the promposal needs to happen this weekend  Procrastination at it’s finest.

And then there were 3…updated odds.

75% Texas A&M
15% Texas Tech
10% Ole Miss

Ugh, just when I thought I was done dealing with the high school GC office, Texas folks I could really use your input. In the student hand book it clearly states that final rank will be calculated after the 3rd 9 week grading period of senior year. Our school requires you to take a minimum of four non weighted classes and 3 of them must be before senior year. DS was totally unconcerned with rank and took a total of 5 unweighted classes before senior year, senior year he took all fully weighted classes where all the other kids saved one non weighted class for senior year so he really upset the apple cart when end of first semester ranks came out.

The end of the 3rd week grading period was 3/9, he went to ask his GC when final ranks would be released because he’d like to up date some scholarships still in play and was told that final ranks are NOT released except to Val and Sal and that he might get an idea as to rank at the May senior award ceremony or at graduation. Really? What good does this do? How can they withhold this information from the students. They have to figure everyone’s rank to find the Val and Sal so it’s not like they don’t know everyone’s rank. The school is officially non ranking but has to rank the top 10% by state law, DS is easily in the top 5% but there’s a chance he’s moved into the top 1% which would really help with some scholarships. Any advice?

S18 is done here too, though no “official” decision has been made.

Final tally stands at 7A 2D 0WL
Accepted; Yale (WOO HOO! Did NOT expect that) as a Molecular biophysics and biochemistry major, Tufts (still waiting on FA) as a Chemical physics major, Colby College as a cell and molecular biology/biochem major, Hamilton College as chemical physics, Boston College as physics, University of Delaware (honors) as physics, and WPI as Physics
Rejected: Princeton (BOO HOO! Thought that might actually happen…), MIT (not sad - was his top choice but I didn’t think it was a good fit)

Odds right now:
Yale 96%
Tufts 2%
BC: 1%
Hamilton: 0.5%
Colby 0.5%

He has declined admissions to UD and WPI, which was hard to do even though WPI was never going to happen (unaffordable) and UD was not a good academic fit (didn’t realize until revisit).

It is HIGHLY unlikely that S18 will pass up Yale! It was his top choice until he visited MIT and revisited Princeton. They offered him the most money along with perks, they have his specific intended major (molecular biophysics) which no one else really had so he would’ve had to double major or major/minor, and he will still be able to wear all his high school gear as they too are blue/white and Bulldogs!! Haha

Laughing at myself because I completely forgot to list WashU (accepted) in #14815 . . . no merit $ there, so it was never a serious contender in my mind, but I can’t believe I forgot about it!

Ha @pickledginger shows there’s a light at the end of the tunnel and we will forget everything irrelevant!

Final tally:

Accepted:
USC (California)
McGill
UBC Vancouver
U Victoria
ASU Barrett
Trinity U

She pulled her app from Grinnell in Feb. She had received a likely letter, but she was sure she wouldn’t attend.

No waitlists or denials.

She was offered significant merit at each school, some via NMF. H and I encouraged her to apply to more reach schools that offer merit, but the three she visited (Tulane, WashU, Rice) she felt were not a good fit.

She will attend McGill with a nice merit package that covers full tuition plus. She is glad to be done.
