Checked with our agent about auto insurance. D18 already has the “good driver” discount so the resident discount wouldn’t change her rate at all. Sounds kind of fishy - I think it’s time to start doing some insurance shopping.
@memmom2018 What happens if your DD assigned roommate has no interest in coordinating bedroom sets? I know my DD already has her comforter and sheets (and she chose to make sure those weren’t overly matchy.)
I can see the station…but there’s a force field between it and me…aaahhhh. We took a last minute trip to one of the schools yesterday…which is also the default and where we paid the deposit and housing deposit already. The opponent is still on the table until midnight though…I just want to be done! I want to move forward with orientation, etc.
Last day for DS is tomorrow, then it’s a couple events, AP exams, banquet before graduation. But essentially, tomorrow is his last NORMAL day of high school. :((
@stemmmm This actually was kind of a neat project. Since they were working on poetry this semester they have been working on writing 9 different kinds of poems that will be bound in a memory book for their senior year. DS has actually enjoyed the process and certainly had more work to do for it then me. Our letter was sent this morning in a sealed envelope for his teacher. This Friday, the day before prom, they will have a coffee house style reading of one poem each they select to share and then the teacher will hand out the sealed envelopes to the students for them to read. It will surely be an emotional moment for the class. I have always made sure my kids knew they had our love and support and we are openly loving but I’m also aware there may be kids who don’t get that attention often. Hopefully they get something from the letter.
That being said it was difficult to put something in writing. The letter carried a distinct weight of importance yet I didn’t want to sound cheesy or dramatic.
My daughter actually found a roommate and filled out the housing application last night. She also signed up for the Honors College 2 day orientation in June (there is a 1 day corresponding parent orientation that we are going to sign up for). She also filled in the application form for a summer internship. Very impressed that she took the initiative to get them done (with only slight nagging this weekend;)
She and her roommate chatted and do not want to coordinate their room, which I am happy about. We are in the NE and she said that none of her friends are going the matchy-matchy route in their dorm rooms, but this is just a random sampling! The Honors College has a refrigerator/microwave in every room, so those big ticket items are covered.
Wow, I did not realize there were schools ending already, with final regular days arriving this week.
I think we go through the 25th.
Roommate match confirmed. Now on to 5 AP tests. No time for ice cream yet!
Our son is finished on the 25th as well. Two of those are AP days where all he has to do is take the test. He got an Ithaca College window sticker yesterday and went right out and put it on his rear window. He’s struggled with calculus, but he’s always had a smattering of low grades; since it’s nothing new for him, I don’t think he’s in danger of having admission revoked. It isn’t as if his overall grades are changing much. He just hit a wall with Calculus (like I did with Algebra 2), and he’s not going to have to take anything that advanced in college. At the admitted students day he was told that he could “take a math class that wasn’t really math.”
D finally decided this weekend, but I’m not changing my avatar, I loathe burnt orange.
We have:
Immunizations
Eye doctor
Trip to Spain
5 APs
Val speech to write
A crazy amount of shopping, she needs a professional wardrobe
Move from wheelchair to crutches/physical therapy
4 placement tests
Orientation visit
Camp Texas
Bedroom renovation
Life skills, this kid can only make ramen in the microwave!
My Son’s last day of school is Friday. Boy the year sure flew by.
@amominaz - We got the healthcare POA for D16 and plan to for S18 when he turns 18.
Thanks to this group for the reminder to check on car insurance! Our carrier, Geico, quoted me more than $1000 savings annually for our policy when my son leaves for college (more than 100 miles away). If we sell his car, which we have been considering, we would save an
additional $1000 dollars annually on our insurance and he would still be able to be covered to drive one of our cars while home on breaks. He won’t be taking a car to school, at least for a couple of years.
Last day of school for son is June 1st. Graduation is June 2nd at 10am. We have a busy month. 3 banquets, one is girlfriends. 2 proms, girlfriend goes to another school in district. They could not decide on which one to go to so both it is. I am glad but the cost will be a little higher for son. Award ceremony, AP testing, Senior sunset and multiple other senior activities. June the 11th and 12th orientation for college. I know it will all go by so very fast.
DD has 4 days left of regular school. Crazy how just a few month ago May seemed so far away.
I just wanted to say congrats to those with a decision and deposit paid. And to those still deciding …take your time you it’s a hard decision. Yes, there is a deadline but you want it to be a solid choice. Many hugs.
DD won’t turn 18 until she’s already in college so I have no idea how we will handle the signed paperwork and such. Very stressful. I am thinking about making a special trip to see her and get them all signed.
Last day of HS still more than a month away. Go until June13 DD turns 18 on June 14 and graduates June 15. Then on Sunday June17 her and wife off to Clemson for 2 day orientation which includes picking classes for the fall…
Wow, @bughdad. That’s a quick turnaround between the end of school an orientation. Our son has about 6 weeks between the last day of school and orientation (graduation doesn’t happen for 10 days after the last day).
@MACmiracle, I’m happy for you and your D!
We have State Farm and have a ‘good student’, and ‘more than 100 miles away from home at college discount’.
We signed up for FSU orientation in June. It starts on a Monday evening and ends Wednesday early afternoon. S18 stays on campus so I was sorely tempted to just send him by himself; but there are parent talks/activities the whole time, and with such a big, unfamiliar school I figured we better get as much info as we can now. A visit to the campus bookstore to gear up will also be in order.
Daughter’s last day of actual class is next week, then she has 5 AP exams to take and one final presentation for her engineering Capstone project. Last official day of school (not really any classes that day) is 5/25, but because of Memorial Day weekend, graduation is not until 6/2. Thankfully she does not have a formal orientation over the summer at Duke, she just moves in a week early, so she can spend the summer babysitting and tutoring to earn her spending money for the year. It seems like just yesterday that I was leaving her at kindergarten for the first time.
We won’t get a car insurance discount this time because D18 will be so close but I can’t complain since we won’t have to worry about health insurance with her because she’ll be in-network geographically. That will save us much more.
And D13 is now off our auto insurance and phone plan since getting a real job and moving out-of-state. Woo hoo!
