Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Is it ok to

The comfortable lay out of College Confidential has been modified. I don’t know where to click. Status messages hiding from me. Avatars out of control.

A metaphor for life.

@amominaz

We had an assembly for seniors a few weeks ago about the need for anyone over 18-- not just college kids-- to have a Health Care proxy.

I have one, as does my husband and my 19 year old son. When he went away to school I mailed a copy to the health office to have on file. My daughter will be getting hers done one of these days.

@TexasMom18 Oh my, I had a hard enough time coming up with the 80 allowable words for the yearbook page - made me all sentimental and teary - I don’t want to be forced to write my kid an essay.

@stemmmm Wait until the first summer home after a year in a dorm - that summer was the summer that we put DS into 12 month, year round housing 8 miles up the road! He got 3 days at the end of each semester to come home, be treated like a Prince, be waited on by the family (his staff) and get his laundry done, then reality set back in and he was shoo’d off to his digs!

I have the POA for Healthcare for my DD and did not intend to do another for a different state.

@mommdc Thanks for the link on the insurance - I hadn’t thought of the deductible - our deductibles here in TX are stupid high

My insurance went up by $800 a year when I added my D. That amount will be reduced by half when she goes away to college more than 150 miles away without a car. She’ll still be covered if she borrows someone’s car or uses a zip car, and when she comes home.

I’m definitely getting a POA and health care agency. I hope to never use them.

We have a decision! It’s University of Virginia for my son. So happy to move on to the next steps!

DS18 committed to USC. Now I have to not only get him ready to move on to his next chapter, but I have to focus on moving our whole family halfway across the country. I can finally get the house ready to put on the market, sell a ton of our belongings and join my husband on the west coast (bay area-major downsize)! I stayed put for a year and a half while my DS18 finished high school where he started. Big changes in our household. Happy to have 2 Trojan Sons next year!

3 weeks to go til graduation. Whoo hoo. Wait a minute. My wife wants me to clean the house and basement before family and friends arrive :-(.

@amominaz we are getting both.

My daughter is very excited about decorating her dorm room. Furman randomly assigns roommates to freshmen but she won’t find out who until July. She wants to be super coordinated. Is this just a southern thing or do your daughters plan to do the same?

No interest in coordinating over here. My D says she wants to express her own style. Im hoping the interest in decorating will carry over to actually making her bed so kids can see her comforter, but that’s probably too much to ask. :slight_smile:

S18 decided yesterday! He is headed to UC Santa Barbara. So happy for him! Whew! I am so glad we arrived at the station with everyone else.

Where can I find out how to change the picture from a grad cap to the college? Everyone’s posts look so cool now!

@lovespink Congrats on S’s decision for UCSB! Whew!
To change your avatar, first make sure you have the desired image saved somewhere easy to get to. Then on CC, go to your profile page, click on Edit Profile (orange button) and you’ll see a dropdown option for Preferences. Click on that and you’ll be directed to a new page that says Notification Preferences. Look at the FAR LEFT side, and you’ll see a list of options. Change My Picture is second on the list. Just upload your image.

Good ideas on POA. As soon as D turned 18 she disappeared from all the health and rx and even dental websites and now i cant track whether claims were paid. Need to have her authorize me for all that.

I’m feeling like today is graduation day for us 2018 parents. Now the 2019 class is officially at bat - go get 'em 2019! Meanwhile, I’ll put my feet up for a while after a wild ride.

It’s D Day for those who are still undecided. Good luck to everybody making final decisions today. To all of us who have a decision, it’s time for cake and ice cream!

No putting feet up around here. We still have school for a month, and lots of stuff to take care of.

D is home for probably the last summer, we brought all the stuff home from her on campus apartment, and moving her into an off campus apartment in August.

I also want/need to look for a part time job.

D finally made her decision last week. I had to help her older sister move and knew I’d be gone for several days, so I just left a check for a deposit and hoped for the best. H told me she sent in the deposit the day after I left.

When I got back several days later, I could see D was transformed. The stress that seemed to plague her since the fall was completely gone. She seems very happy and back to her old self.

I had been afraid the concussion she had last fall may have impacted her permanently, but now I think it was mostly the stress of senior year (particularly AP chem) and the college application/decision process that weighed on her so heavily. The concussion didn’t help, though.

Besides the college decision being done, it helped that D chose not go on the senior trip and instead worked intensely that week and finished every paper and project for the year. This would probably not be the solution for most stressed-out kids but it was the right choice for her.

She also feels no pressure about AP tests since she has already decided she wants to take those classes again at college.

She has another month of school but it should be very low stress. :slight_smile:

D told me her long-term music teacher was enthusiastic about the school when D told her she was probably going to commit, because of the music faculty and the musical opportunities D would have there. That conversation must have happened at her lesson the night before she sent in the commitment, and I think it gave her encouragement. Lately, we’d been focusing on academics, science facilities, and cost, and the music piece was forgotten even though it’s such a big part of her life.

She chose the instate public full-tuition option and will graduate debt-free. Between the engineering and honors programs, I’m confident she’ll get a good education and have lots of opportunities.

S’18 made his decision last week. It was a tough one, but he will be at UF next year. Go Gators!
