Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@arabellacat We are also in GA. DS did not apply to UGA, but did to GT, with little hope of getting in, since they value community service so much. We are going ED out of state. With D17 we did the same, and felt like outcasts. It seems that those in GA who dont get into UGA/GT go to KSU, GA southern, middle GA, etc. Or else go to Bama, USC, and other neighboring schools. Here we are, DC and upstate NY LOL

@arabellacat I see the same thing here. Students have no idea how competitive acceptance into state flagships have become. Many won’t consider any other options for fear of being considered “less than” My DS16 chose one of our other state schools that was a much better fit for him over Clemson, and heard a lot of negative comments. It was the best choice for him.

@carolinamom2boys and @sdl0625 - I totally agree with your comments. Have a D17 who is transferring from KSU to UGA in the spring - a much better route for him so it’s a good process. My son said he knows many kids at his school who are considering the same route. D17 is having a great experience at KSU and is now excited to continue his degree at UGA. D19 got accepted to Ole Miss, UT Knoxville and UT Chattanooga and is excited to be going to UT Knoxville thanks to my ex husband who lives in TN so we get the instate tuition - woohoo.

@arabellacat that is great news about UTK. At one point my D17 was interested due to their body farm, but later changed her career plans

I don’t think you can go wrong with Marist or Hobart. Marist has easy access to NYC I believe. I really wanted Twin A to tour Marist, but she decided not to. My childhood friend is a rock star at IBM in Poughkepsie and raves about Marist. She has been there since graduating UF with me and I would have loved to send a kid there.

@carolina193 That is wonderful news for your son!

@arabellacat and @sdl0625 We are also in GA and did not bother to apply to UGA. It has been either a thrilling or a devastating day for so many kids. Glad we have next week off.

Congrats @carolinamom2boys and @me29034 - love hearing all the good news!

It’s unfortunate to see how difficult state flagship acceptances have become for in-state students. We’ve had that problem in MD for a while now. And because of that, many of our students end up going to other state flagships, thus perpetuating the problem!

UGA has become very popular at my kids’ high school. It’s a small private h.s - D17’s graduating class was about 120 kids and four are now sophomores at UGA. However, I just heard from my friend that her daughter was deferred today and she’s a straight A, all-honors/AP student. It was her first choice so she is pretty bummed she didn’t get in during EA round.

@4kids4us UGA only takes 12-15% OOS. I guess it’s getting harder for everyone. Also kind of sad that 3 of D’s friends got into the Honors college (sooo hard to get into!) and not a single one plans to go. Hmmm

Question: My DD applied EA and is ranked 1/69 of her Georgia public HS class
 she thought as Valedictorian, she was assured a spot for UGA. But today she got deferred.

Anyone had that experience? She’s been accepted to several schools with great scholarship offers, but UGA would be cheaper for us.

@K8sMom2002 - I also thought as Valedictorian you were assured a spot too but maybe that is RD? Probably worth checking.

@4kids4us - it is interesting how many get accepted EA to UGA yet don’t attend but maybe that is good news for the deferred applicants in many ways. A friend of mines D18 applied EA to both UGA and to GTech and was accepted to both but decided on GTech.

@sdl0625 - thank you
he is excited and we are happy to be done with the process but I do like to see how everyone else’s kids are doing and where they are getting acceptances so that is why I continue to read the posts?

One school I continue to hear a lot of good things about in GA is Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville which seems to be a great LAC for those in the 3.0 - 3.5 GPA range. My son wanted the big SEC school so I couldn’t convince him to look at it.

@K8sMom2002 I believe that is true that Val’s get in, at least with GT I know that is true. Maybe ask in Dr Graves blog, or call the school. Being Val is probably not determined in their minds, probably until after 1st semester?

My DD just decided to apply to Manhattan College and nixed Tulane. My wife said “Are you joking, New York City!”. My DD’s reply was “yup

As in yup she is applying

DD’s lottery ticket paid off today. We’re totally in shock. Her first comment was, “now I don’t have to stress over that awful interview.” South Carolina acceptance came today also and I have to admit it was a bit bittersweet with the merit aid offer.

@Momof3kidz Congrats!

Your post about the interview was so upsetting. I assume it wasn’t South Carolina. Have you considered sending feedback?

Congrats to your daughter @Momof3kidz

Congrats!!!

@Momof3kidz Congrats! Are you OOS? A friend of D’s was accepted there today with IS tuition, but that is still well above our IS tuition to UGA (with Hope and Zell scholarships).

@peachActuary73 I wasn’t going to just in case my daughter exaggerated but we heard from another student that she had a similar experience. The interview was at a small liberal arts college in PA so I’m sure they would appreciate knowing. Once things settle down I plan to talk to DD’s guidance counselor for advice.

We are OOS for South Carolina and she received merit money. I didn’t pay much attention to the amount because it said her real award would be given in March and I knew she would need to decline before then.

Her ED acceptance is at Tulane. DD’s stats were low for the school but for anyone following our story, she had a rough freshman year but had a 4.0 as a junior. I have to think that her growth and excellent essay helped her a great deal. She has come a long way and worked very hard for this.

@Momof3kidz
Congrats! I think most of us still have a long road!
