@MAandMEmom
Is the school far away? I would be annoyed too especially if the school is close.
I hate those portals. Just e-mail the decision!!!
Yes just one hour north of us in Boston. I lurked on an online chat sponsored by admissions last night and almost blurted out on my keyboardâŠcome on with the old school snail mail! Itâs not a super competitive and rolling admission so what gives??
Thanks everyone and Congrats @DCNatFan Yâall are on a roll!! So many choices.
Yes, UR is snail mail only. So far she doesnât know they were mailed. I thought decisions would be mailed next week, but I stumbled upon a twitter announcement. We are just over 3 hours away so if it is a number 10 envelope, it might be here tomorrow. The 9x12 not so much. Maybe it was meant to be delayed so she and Twin A can find out at the same time? Hobart & William Smith is a portal I believe and due next week. Weâre now in the 6-10 inches range. I canât evenâŠ
@DCNatFan congratulations!!!
Congratulations @DCNatFan ! Wonderful school!
Congrats @DCNatFan !!!
Werenât there some acceptance emails sent in error at some schools in the past?
I think receiving a letter in the mail is great.
Thatâs how the three schools my two kids applied to handled it.
And they found out pretty early because they applied in the summer and in November.
@mommdc it happened at Tulane last year or the year before. The error was caught quickly, but the damage had already been done.
Mail just came and no notice for Twin B from UR. Forecast is still 6+ of snow so we wonât get mail until Tuesday or Wednesday. I actually feel more calm. One week from today weâll know whether both girls got accepted to their ED choices. DH and I are headed out into the crowds for a few things such as vodka and bird seed.
Maybe there will be some more updates today? West coasters any good news?
@TwinMom2023
Vodka and bird seed? Interesting shopping list!!!
Next week is probably big for a lot of us! Hang in there!!
@TwinMom2023 - BAHAHA! I just came home with wine and suetâŠ
Has anyone else signed up for Informed Delivery through the post office? I did yesterday. It sends you photos of whatâs coming in your mail in the next day or so, if you have packages or anything with special delivery status. One of DSâs colleges still mails decisions (Gettysburg) but thatâs not coming until mid-March. Still, I am set up.
No snail mail for us today unfortunately. FYI, informed delivery usually is for standard sized envelopes so most larger items will not appear. Thatâs at least how itâs been for me.
Gotta drink and feed the birds!! @5050100 and @JBSeattle DH is a nature freak.
The kids arenât talking about college decisions at all. Itâs like pitching a perfect game - donât mention it. Loved reading the different swag approaches. We bought zero.
For you with experience - what are first steps after you know which college? Deposit? First semester grades in January? Hotel reservations for accepted students day and/or parents weekend? Are there any steps that we might not realize? Are all colleges different for deciding on whether to do and LLC instead of standard dorm?
@TwinMom2023 For Dâs school we did a housing deposit on the first available date (the kids who deposited on that date get a day to choose rooms before it opens up to others). I expect this will vary by college but
as part of the housing app she also applied for and got into an LLC- partly to get into a nicer dorm. Hopefully it also makes a good community for her. She has applied for the endowed scholarships with their common app- donât forget to do this every year! In February she will interview for competitive merit and audition for a theatre scholarship. I think the roommate site opens in April. I hope to get her signed up for the first summer orientation so she gets registered for classes early. And she will be working on outside scholarships. We donât have to reserve hotels because itâs not far away but that is a good thought.
Today she was mulling over majors. Sheâs been pretty set on Recreation and Park Management, with theatre (minor or double major). She just finished a DE Geography class and really liked it so thatâs a possible major, along with some environmental science. To me, Recreation/Park Management fits most with jobs sheâs interested in- Parks & Rec, Chamber of Commerce, local government, National Parks, tourism, etc. She can choose the track that has more of the conservation side and fit in Geography where possible. Fortunately her school has all of this which was a âmajorâ selling point. Her LLC is Health & Wellness, because of Recreation. I told her if she changes her mind during the year they wonât kick her out, she would just live somewhere else sophomore year, so not to worry too much about definitely deciding a major, right now.
@TwinMom2023 love your shopping list for the stormâŠwe are martini and fireplace storm folks. Been thinking about bird watching, might be a hobby I take up when my youngest leaves the nest.
Chiming in to answer your whatâs next question. Deposit if it weighs in on housing, though with ED your deposit will be do soon.
Outside of the deposits the biggest things to do is:
- Book hotels for parents weekend AND move in weekend, especially for a school in a small town. If you can not figure out the move in schedule book for a couple dates around what it was this year. Also book for accepted students weekend. Parents weekend the rising seniors, juniors end sophomores parents already have been booking. In September we booked three weeks in a row for what we thought would be parents weekend next year in and the night it was announced in November I watched our hotel sell out online for more money than I had the room reserved at. Just keep a google sheet of reservations. We did not do ED so last year after the EAs came in I made reservations for parents weekend for all schools in January and still Could not get at my the school my daughter ended up going to so we had stay 25 minutes away.
- Join the parents âunofficialâ FB page for the schools. You will get so much information from there...including where to book the hotels!
Stay warm and safe during the storm!
A little OT, but Iâm looking for ideas for S19 for Christmas. My other kids all gave me lots of ideas, but S19 always seems to be hard to buy for but thinking ahead for college. I canât buy any swag b/c we arenât even close to knowing where he will end up. The only ideas he gave me were a long/sleeve T-shirt from his favorite NFL team, a UA duffle bag and a specific video game. I did buy him some UA cold gear gloves b/c he can use those now but I donât even know if heâll be going somewhere cold next year for school. Plus, my mom pesters me nonstop for ideas (I have to tell her exactly what to get him). And dh informed me that MIL is sending a check for Christmas so I have to buy gifts from her for our kids. Then on top of that, his birthday is less than two weeks after Christmas.
I usually do one Santa gift which is usually their âwow/funâ gift which is unwrapped under the tree. For example, S21 wants AirPods this year (ugh!) and last year D23 wanted a Polaroid. I donât even remember what S19 got last year. Then they get a couple of wrapped gifts from dh/me. The Santa gift doesnt have to be anything expensive, but I canât even think of anything for him!
So, what kinds of things are your 2019 kids asking for and/or getting?
And to keep this on topic, he has applied to six schools so far. Still has two schools he is waiting to apply to as he is still in recruiting process for both. He did get an official offer last week, but it was from a D2 school he had never even had any contact with! They saw his film, called one of his coaches, then called him and gave him a verbal offer over the phone. But itâs a very small school in a rural area, probably a 3-4hr drive from here. It doesnât look like a fit for him so he told them he needed to have time to consider. If nothing else, it was a nice boost to his ego even tho heâs not really interested. While heâd love to play his sport in college, he only wants to play if the school is going to be a good fit academically and is a place he wants to go regardless of whether he gets to play.
@4kids4us a raincoat, Google mini, rain boots,
@4kids4us
You could get him some video game controllers. Back in the day, mine got trashed in college! Tickets to a sporting event?
I agree with rain coat. Getting a waterproof jacket for sure with a hood. Also getting a really good portable charger. He has one but itâs cheap and doesnât do a great job. In that same vein, Iâm getting S19 a zip up pouch that fits headphones, charger, long power cord etc. and I think Iâll hunt down a slim leather wallet that just carries a couple of cards and cash.
