@Longhaul - Good luck! And congrats to your '18 grad on landing the job!
@Cotton2017 - Nice list! Congrats and good luck with the scholarshipsā¦
@Longhaul
You may have guessed that I live in Seattle. Let me know if you would like any help/advice on anything (even just a restaurant suggestion or two). Feel free to PM.
D19 was deferred by Tulane yesterday (and UMich the day before). Not a huge surprise, we knew they were reach schools for her. Sheās not terribly disappointed, actually sheās pleased that it wasnāt rejections. And if Iām being honest, I didnāt want her going quite so far away from home (weāre in MA). But it is hard now to have to wait a few more weeks with no acceptances.
She does not have a top choice. She applied to a range of schools and has resisted getting emotionally invested in any one school. Instead, she applied to schools where she would be happy to attend, and then planned to revisit those that accept her, to chose. I thought that was a good attitude to have, but now Iām seeing that schools really want to see applicants who are emotionally invested. So, what to you do? Fake it?
She now has to decide whether to send a LOCI to the schools that deferred her. They say the best way to get the acceptance is to say, if accepted you will definitely attend. But we wonāt know for a few weeks what her other options will be. H says, say it anywayā¦write the LOCI and say you will definitely attend. Even if youāre not sure. I have a hard time with that. Is that what people do? Or should we wait it out a few weeks before sending a LOCI?
Sorry about the 2 deferrals. Thereās no shame in being deferred (or even rejected) by reach schools. Thatās why theyāre called reaches. Every kid, even the tippy top ones, have reach schools and thousands of them get deferred/rejected every year. You saw the UMich thread. Kids with 1550+ SAT/35 ACT and 4.0 UW GPA were deferred.
Iām sure you and your DD planned correctly in terms of identifying and applying to match and safeties. The acceptances will come eventually. I get itās hard to wait a few more weeks, but thereās really no point in using brain cells mulling over the deferrals to reach schools at this point. I say that only because, as parents, thereās nothing we can do to change the past admissions decisions.
However, you want to change future admissions decisions to UMich and Tulane. Thatās good. I donāt have experience with LOCI. In a past post, you mentioned your DD met with a Tulane rep at a college fair. I would have her send a message to that Tulane rep letting her know how disappointed she was in the deferral but is still very interested in attending Tulane if accepted. The wording has to be right though. I couldnāt sleep at night if I told or wrote to a college rep telling him/her I WILL attend if accepted if thatās not true. I supposed some people do though.
Please enjoy the Holidays because your DD has a few college acceptances to look forward to in a few weeks!
@Longhaul I donāt think Seattle U will update portals.
December 21
Early Action notification date: Students who successfully completed their application through Early Action will be mailed an admission decision on this date. Students selected to receive an institutional merit scholarship will be notified at the time of their acceptance. Please note that most applicants will receive decision letters several days after this date.
So for us, we may get it on the 24th as we are local but who knows. We will of course be refreshing the portal all day just in case!
@momzilla2D I am so sorry about the deferrals. I personally wouldnāt send 2 LOCI that say she will definitely attend, especially if finances are a factor. If the school is among the top choices and she can honestly say that, I would go that route. It is harder with a reach though and the wording has to be right, but sincere. Iād focus on what sheād bring to campus in the letter, versus what XYZ school can do for her if you choose to send one. Iād also be thinking hard about what she is still waiting on, how high they rank (and maybe start a loose ranking) as well as what the match/safety scenario is.
Happy holidays to you all! All of Sās EA decisions have come in and heās so very happy with his options. He was accepted with strong merit at Allegheny, Wooster, Cornell College and Ursinus, merit under our budget at Knox and Earlham, deferred at Trinity TX, rejected at WPI, given a full tuition scholarship at UT Dallas and a partial at Texas Tech. The only decision outstanding is Denison and some follow up on extra scholarships. Now we both get to enjoy the best Christmas present of all: getting back to life outside applying for college.
Wishing you all restful and happy time with your senior. All this busyness has distracted me from the real issue: my chick is really about to leave the nest. Enjoy your holidays!
@fwtxmom - Enjoy your holidays! (Iām trying not to think about the nest right now)ā¦
Yeah!! My D was accepted with a $25,100 scholarship to Manhattan College!!
YES!!! Iām really happy for you and your D.
How high is Manhattan on her list?
Sheād be unique amongst her friends by going to a school with an athletic team name of the Jaspers.
@JBSeattle Congratulations to your daughter. Is $35000 (60000-25000) doable for your family?
@kidzncatz
Yes, we will tell her she needs to work and encourage her to apply for outside scholarships though.
I think Manhattan is #1 based on where she has been admitted/dollars working.
She is waiting until Feb/March on Cal Poly and Univ San Diego (not too optimistic on those).
Thanks @ChicagoSportsFn
Congrats to your daughter @JBSeattle !! Great schoolnwith a strong alumni network in the tri-state area!
D19 accepted today to Stony Brook University, into the Health Sciences program. Was a nice surprise just before the break! Waiting on just one more EA due in January and three RDs. So looking forward to being able to sit down and figure out costs, compare programs and have D19 make a decision!!!
@JBSeattle you may want to investigate Manhattanās policy regarding outside scholarships. Sometimes they adjust their scholarship offers if there is any need based money offered because your " need" decreases when you receive additional scholarships.
Congrats on acceptances !
Good point @carolinamom2boys
@jbseattle congrats! I know youāve been waiting for word on Manhattan! Would you mind sharing your dās stats - Manhattan is high on my sonās list (junior).
She had 3.5 uw gpa and 1160 SAT. Unsure weighted as her school does not weight. Been saying 3.7 weighted but think it is higher as she has been taking 3-4 AP courses per semester. She has passed two AP exams and taking 3 more this year. She also is a Nordstromās Ambassador and worked there during summer as well as 4 years Green Lake Crew.
