Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

I also think it will cost a whole lot more to go to school in Manhattan than the list price. I bet if you compare the price of a ticket to the movies in ‘Nowhere Ohio’ it’s going to be less than in NYC. Shuttles to the airport, food at cafes, pizzas, and just about anything you can think of are going to be cheaper in Ohio.

My father had a co-worker, an executive, who always wanted to live in NYC and took a high paying job there(from Nowhere, WI). Well, it turns out you can’t go to the theater or eat out or do a lot of things in NYC every night if you have to pay for it yourself. He loved NYC, but he loved it on an expense account. I think he lasted a year before he decided he didn’t love it that much.

Some (maybe all) of the NYC schools get discounts or even free entry for students at a lot of things - theater, museums etc. Helps the cost a bit.
My D19 would totally think Columbus was middle of nowhere so I get that! @JBSeattle , hoping your D19 settles on something that makes you both happy academics and $$-wise.

@JBSeattle Just make sure you go to Manhattan College with eyes wide open. It’s not in the middle of NYC - it’s in the Bronx. Public transpiration to Time Square for example will take you almost 1 hour. So even if you wanted to go to the museums, theatre, etc. it’s not like you just walk out your door. In fact, it’s just as easy, if not easier to get there from some NJ schools.

@eb23282
Yup, good point. I hear the train is quicker but it is not easily walkable from the school.
After we visit in April, she will need to make a quick decision.

@eb23282 - I was just going to post the same thing. @JBSeattle-If you have the time, try to make the trip into mid-town so you can get a feel for time,trains,transfers, etc

Thanks for the suggestion @5050100 and @eb23282

We are not renting a car for obvious reasons and we are staying in Uptown Manhattan so I think that will give my daughter a feel for what it is like. Maybe we will take an Uber if there is time sensitivity but subway on way back.
We are there 4 days. One is an admitted student day and one day we are going back to meet with an Admissions Counselor.

@Gatormama - I saw your post regarding Beloit and junk credit ratings, etc. This was very interesting as I think Beloit might be a good fit for my daughter. Now I am concerned. I also was reading about what is happening over at Hampshire. What a mess.

My D17 attends school in DC. The biggest expense for us is food and off campus housing. Her school only guarantees housing for the first two years. Next year she will need an apartment or house, both of which are very expensive. Even the grocery stores cost significantly more than in the suburbs. Eating out is a luxury that she chooses to spend her money on. We truly would not change this experience for the world and she fully takes advantage of all that’s available in the city. It is also fun to visit.

D’s housing will cost us twice what her friends are paying at schools outside of the city for nicer accommodations. We also have to consider the cost of parking if her clinicals are not accessible by the metro. Her housing plus parking will likely run us $900-$1000/month next year not including food.

Spoke with a Beloit parent this past week, they are not pleased with the way the President is handling the financial situation or communicating with parents. They say their son loves the school and they feel he has been receiving a good education but they are concerned.

@Gatormama — I have a son at Allegheny and while I know they struggled to make enrollment goals in the past few years, they’ve been very intentional with recent changes to make up for fluctuating numbers. Their financial plan, although not an easy one—reducing some faculty, for instance, now includes intentionally lower enrollment figures because they do value the education they stand for. This means they will be more selective in the future, and admit smaller classes but maintain their academic standing. I have found that the education my son is receiving is outstanding, especially with regards to research opportunities and collaboration with faculty. Just my two cents.

Also, the financial and merit aid my son receives has remained stable, although it has not increased with tuition increases. I have heard of universities with drastically varying aid from year to year, or difficulties in maintaining instructional or facility quality due to deep cuts (such as at embattled public universities relying on a state’s budget).

DS19 and I had the nicest time meeting a fellow CC mom and her son to see if they would be a good match for roommates. It’s a match and we are so excited. Great kid. Great family.

@JBSeattle love the reports

@DCNatFan Congratulations. So many choices!

Arg. First denial from Chicago Unifieds. Bummer!! I opened the letter and decided not to say anything, thinking DS would see it and open it when he was ready. Then, DH bellows out (as S in on his way out the door for a vocal lesson), “Have you seen your mail?” Thanks. X(

Question: should DS follow up with walk-ins from Chicago? None came out and said, “please apply as soon as possible!” , but all were encouraging I suppose. Thoughts?

My daughter just got a very thin envelope in the mail from USD. I think this might be her first outright denial. She was waitlisted by UVM a couple days ago. At least she still has choices as USD was also a financial long shot even if she got in.

Son finally heard from his one outstanding application. He had applied early to Pitt and was asked to send midyear grades and take another SAT. He didn’t take the SAT again but did send grades (his best ever) and received the official acceptance yesterday. I don’t think this changes anything - he is still planning on Temple, but it was nice to hear back and get positive results.

Congrats to your son @me29034

@me29034 Congrats on the Pitt acceptance!

@me29034
Always nice to get an acceptance though!

We just got back from the Direct Admit day for the Kelley school of business at Indiana. It was really nice. DD liked it and it’s her first choice. Long way from Texas, but that’s part of the appeal I think!
