Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@DCNatFan finally a win!!!

Congrats @DCNatFan

@DCNatFan Awesome. She has a great list.

@DCNatFan Woot! Woot!

Congrats to her @DCNatFan!

Yeah @DCNatFan

Well now my daughter is starting to be swayed! She just was coming to Ohio Wesleyan because of maybe using extra scholarship as money. She had this perception that Ohio is “the middle of nowhere”. She now says that she has a tough decision. We visit Manhattan College in April so will be an interesting contrast (nice scholarship there too but not as nice).

@eb23282 and others:
I am very impressed with the school. My daughter was kind of determined to hate it and she has changed her opinion. She may not attend but she is seriously thinking about it now.

Congratulations to your D19, @DCNatFan !

@JBSeattle I too am eagerly awaiting your report! Wanted D19 to consider OWU but since we already live in central OH, she was not interested and already had a couple other OH LACs on her list. But I’m interested to hear about your impressions for sure. If you have any questions about the area in general, happy to do my best to answer!

BTW, Have been lurking on this thread from almost the beginning. Will update w/D19’s info in another post.

@DCNatFan Congratulations to your daughter! That’s exciting news!

Big congratulations to your D @DCNatFan ! (and you too ?)

@augie696 and others:

Here are the cool things about Ohio Wesleyan:
They have already offered my D a $30k scholarship which is given to anyone with 3.4 HS unweighted GPA and 1150 SAT. Today she will be in a competition for a potential additional $10k per year scholarship which would bring COA to just $18k per.
Some of the friendliest people I have ever met.
My daughter found out Columbus has the 3rd highest amount of fashion jobs in US (she is interested in marketing/fashion).
They have a fairly new marketing major.

Most classes are under 20 students and 30 is considered to be a large class.

She could minor in Italian (wife born and raised, we go once every year or two).

They have a fairly new crew team. The dean of admissions handwrote a letter telling her she could row for the school (she did not think she was good enough to row in college).

They have a grant program that gives $ for a student to do pretty much anything that they want (example given was a kid going to Grand Canyon to take photos).

Delaware is a cute little town. Nothing incredible but better than my daughter thought. Columbus is 30-45 minutes away so not far from bigger city/airport.

Almost 100% of students live on campus. The campus is large for a school with just 1,500 students at around 200 acres.

The food was relatively good especially by college standards. They also have multiple coffee shops on campus. The campus itself is a slight mish mash of buildings but many of them are real nice old brick structures.

Rutherford B Hayes wife went to Ohio Wesleyan and her husband gifted this incredible hand carved mirror (huge) to the school. The mirror has only been in the White House and at the school.

The President of the school lives across the street from the campus and hosts new students for lunch.

So, pretty cool place! To get my daughter to go from thinking there was 0 chance to seriously considering it is really a big deal.

@DCNatFan - Great news! I’m so happy for you guys!

@JBSeattle Sounds like you had a successful trip. Having that in the back pocket will make the rest of the process easier. Having a place that is affordable and your kid can say “yeah I can see myself here for four years” takes so much pressure off. Well done!

@JBSeattle what is a scholarship competition?

@eb23282
It is an essay competition which can lead to up to an additional $10k per year merit award (they get an extra $1k per just for participating).

My D was very upset this morning as she found out Marketing is a concentration in Business Admin not a separate major. There was some ambiguity as Marketing is a fairly new program at Ohio Wesleyan.

We are going to a lunch with Professors and will see what they say. I just spoke with the President of the University about it too (not often you can just walk up to the President of the University and ask whatever you want). I think it scares her that she likes this place as she perceives Central Ohio to be “the middle of nowhere”.

Yeah she is saying this place is a no go now. Teenage girls, ugh!!!
The major which she perceived as a bait and switch (wasn’t albeit was unintentionally misleading, it does show properly on website) and “middle of nowhere” are big issues for her. She could change her mind again. She has Western Washington in state as affordable option. She wants to go to Manhattan College but with scholarship it is still $35k per vs $22k for Western Washington and $18-27k depending on scholarship results for Ohio Wesleyan.

@DCNatFan congratulations!!! So happy for her!

@JBSeattle it still sounds like a productive visit, if it’s that close to Columbus I wouldn’t call that the middle of nowhere but it’s also not Manhattan lol. She has very different options on her short list!

@eandesmom
Yes, it will be an interesting choice.
She thinks lots of places are middle of nowhere! Spokane is the middle of nowhere for her. I think she views the Midwest as flyover country.

I did some further research on the majors. The school websites show the courses and they are a bit different. Also Western Washington’s major reads just like Ohio Wesleyan’s: Business Administeation with concentration in Marketing. She was real funny about that as she thought Ohio Wesleyan had a pure Marketing major. I don’t really understand why she cares about that so much.

@JBSeattle Good luck with the decisions. Still seems like great progress.

Was wondering about the concentration scenario in your earlier post. Doesn’t seem that odd. I think Wharton gives undergrads the degree in Econ and a concentration in XXX. Probably varies quite a lot by school.

@peachActuary73
I agree with you. My daughter gets fixated on things and it is hard to change her mind. She is stubborn like her Mama!!
I am hoping having her look at the actual courses will give her some insight.
