Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

@BingeWatcher If your D is shooting for NMF, do you think her SAT prep was enough to do well on PSAT? I know PSAT is shorter, but I’m not clear on whether it’s much different and if it requires a little prep…even if the student has prepped for SAT.

S19 not taking essay either. Doesn’t need it. Will be forced to take the SAT with essay in March at school so, if something really wacky happens and he needs an essay, he can use that one.

@BingeWatcher I misread your post! It’s your d21 at the SAT! Hope she beats her last score.

@homerdog, I think this sitting of the SAT will be her prep for PsAT, Her school takes the PSAT 8/9 in 9th grade.

She took the PSAT 8/9 last year in eighth grade. She thought the math was easy (did not miss any) CR is harder and grammar is her weakest. But these PSAT scores help the school decide if she can take harder APs. So they are important for this reason.

Now when she is taking the PsAT in 11th grade, that will have very heavy prep the summer before.

And I want to save all the official practice SATs for the REAL DEAL prep.

@BingeWatcher Ah. I get it. Our eighth graders take PSAT 8/9 for freshman placement. Then, they take it again as freshman to look for improvement. They take the PSAT as sophomores and (obviously) as juniors. Our schools love the standardized tests. 8-|

Both S19 and D21 took ACTs and SATs in sixth and seventh grade through NUMATS. We never used the scores to go to classes at Northwestern. The sittings were just for practice. They never studied. By now, when it starts to count for S19, he’s pretty used to sitting for three to four hour tests.

Yep, @homerdog, D did the Duke tip in 7th grade, she was a state qualifier in math, we could not afford any Duke Tip Programs. I think taking the SAT like she is doing today, is good practice for 3-4 test also. She knows what to expect.

Anyone know if the proctor at ACTs and SATs talks to the kids about sending schools scores for free? I didn’t talk to S19 about that. I hope he doesn’t try to send any scores today!

Editing now— forget it. Just realized that you opt to send the free scores when you register. Not at the time of the test. Should have googled that before I posted the question.

And don’t forget you have nine days, I think it is, to send free scores after the test is taken.
I have reconsidered and we won’t send scores. She wasn’t doing phenomenally on the practice tests, so I want to see the score first.
It kills me to give up something free. KILLS ME>

So, when do you guys think you send free scores? If the student “thinks” it went well? I’m only thinking of sending it to a few safeties IF he thinks it went well and if they do score choice.

We are sending the free scores (ACT in 2 weeks) to the in-state schools we absolutely know D19 will apply to. That’s it.

Hi guys! I’m one worried mama…my oldest, who is a Sr at TxA&M Corpus Christi, is still in Corpus with the storm. She is also a CNA and works for a nursing home. Even though she was told to evacuate her apartment, she refused because of her patients. Her boss gave her a room (on the 2nd floor) and she is working 24 hrs/day as they are severely short staffed. The power is on because they have a generator but they are having to use buckets as the toilets have stopped working. They are not allowed to go to the 1st floor due to flooding. The building has 5 floors so they are safe from rising water. Her main concern was the wind but hopefully it has died down since talking with her last night. She checked in often yesterday but we’re worried.

@4MyKidz I’m an occupational therapist who has weathered many storms on the East Coast. If the nursing home believed that their residents were in severe danger, they would’ve evacuated .Your daughter is more safe there than her apartment because of the generator and the ability to move to higher floors. I know it’s scary, but she is safe. Please try not to worry if you don’t hear from her frequently today. She is doing her best to care for her patients in an understaffed situation. You should be very proud of your daughter. Keep us posted.

Ditto - your daughter is a true hero, @4MyKidz, and is doing what she feels is right.

@carolinamom2boys Oh yes, we are extremely proud of her. But not surprised. She has exemplified service above self since she was little, from girl scouts to volunteering at a local hospital throughout high school, to delivering the neighbor’s dog’s puppies (all 10 puppies over 7 hours), to getting her CNA at age19 while going to school full time, to now this. Not to mention her athletic scholarships. She is an amazing girl and has accomplished alot in her 21 years. So her dad and I weren’t the least bit surprised that she chose to stay to help…but worrying just goes with the territory!

@4MyKidz Any updates on your daughter? I hope she is doing well - so brave of her to stay!

Good luck to everyone who has a kid at the SAT today - we switched ours to the October date. Going to be a crazy week with SAT on the weekend then PSAT later in the week.

I am booking our tours at the colleges we are visiting in September. One if them is the school that DH and I both went to - do you think I should just fill out the online form or would it be better to call so they know we are alumni?

@4MyKidz, What a wonderful d you have…She will be an incredible RN…Her patients are blessed to have her…

On SAT free score choice…I put in the code for the local community college. I think her score will be fine for them.
When she turns 15, she can take courses there such as Texas Government that are not part of dual credit.

@momtogkc Yes, thx for asking. She facetimed a little while ago…now no AC. But she showed us the view of the street from the third floor. It’s still raining, but very little damage where she is. So far, So good!

@4MyKidz How brave and caring! Hope everyone stays safe!
Even in Austin, it is raining non-stop.

@4MyKidz Update?

Crossposting from another thread:
FWIW, just signed D up for two more preview days. I’m not sure we’ll actually get to the West Chester University one we already signed up for, as husband has to go down to Texas because of the disaster down there and I have to work the weekend of the event. But WCU is close enough – about 2.5 hours – that we can hop down there any day.

WVU has “discover” days in October and November; signup is here:
https://admissions.wvu.edu/visit/discover

And Ohio U has the same kind of program, on different weekend days, here:
https://www.ohio.edu/admissions/visit/special-programs/discovery-day.cfm

We couldn’t see the point of going to those two schools on completely separate weekends - each is 6-7 hours away - but only 2.5 hours from each other.

Serendipitously, there’s a Discover the Arts day at OU on the Columbus Day Monday, the same weekend that WVU has a discover day on the Saturday, so we’re combining the two. Even though D is likely not going to major in theater, she still loves it, and it’s an entryway into a full-day visit that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to make.
