@gusmahler Ugh! Those scantron sheets! I hope it’s all well and good with D’s test. If that happened to me, I would be a wreck for the rest of the test. It’s terrific that she recovered well and fixed it.
I got access via VPN and the score was underwhelming - only 20 points higher than last year and 100 points lower than the SAT he took in October. He did not have a good feeling about the PSAT.
The SAT being higher is the good thing though. That’s what counts the most for most of our kids.
@eh1234 I did the same and my son is in almost an identical situation. He only got 20 points higher on the PSAT than last year and almost 100 points lower than he did on the Mock SAT he took a few weeks ago. He was 98th percentile in English and 87th in Math. (???) He’s only at 204 so his goal of Commendation is also a complete wash. Between this and his NSLI rejection this is shaping up to be a bit of a crummy semester for him so far. Hope the actual SAT in March goes better.
S19 got his PSAT scores on Friday. The GCs met with all the kids (small school) and gave them out. S got 222, which was our state’s cut-off last year but cut-offs have been rising the last couple years so who knows. He got dinged a bit by his writing score, he said. Anyhow, on to the real test, the SAT. Since he did well with self-study for PSAT, I got him a big SAT book to work on over the holidays.
D19 got a 1500 PSAT - SI of 225 (750 m, 750 English/reading). We are happy as it confirms her ACT 35 she got in October. Happy day! She did Prep for both tests. Good luck all around to you guys!
We managed to get S19’s score today, and he is five points higher than the cutoff in our state last year, so he is feeling pleased and fairly confident. I understand that NMF is not a big thing for many, but it is a big deal in our school and district, with or without money. I am glad that our school honors the winners. S19 plays a sport, but it’s not one that is usually recognized. The athletes who play traditional sports get a lot of recognition, and it’s nice to give other kids acknowledgment for academic achievement.
Congrats to all the NMSF. Unfortunately, my D19 got 215. Higher than I expected, but well below the TX cutoff.
How do you get all the scores? This morning I received email from my D’s school saying that they have not received PSAT scores from CB yet. I also received from CB telling that the scores are available on Dec 11, 12, 13. D is not home yet. She is in a middle of exams. I will not bother her about the scores today.
@coolweather they are releasing scores in different states on different days, so it depends on where you are when you sign in whether you can read the scores today, tomorrow or Wednesday. However, there is a way to spoof your sign-in using something called a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to make it look like you’re dialling in from California, which sees scores today. So if you’re dying of curiosity, there’s a way to get the info early.
D19’s PSAT score is in, much better than expected (not NMSF level, but an outside shot at commended status), so that’s nice—but, of course, her highstrung self is now convinced she did horribly badly and has no shot of gaining entrance to any college anywhere let along getting some sort of scholarship to go to college, and she’s not letting me convince her otherwise.
Sometimes I honestly don’t know what to do with her. :-??
@dfbdfb I am with you on that one. It took awhile to convince my d that her score was really good, even though it wasn’t NMF level. I reminded her, as I have for weeks, that she is most likely going to a college that doesn’t care what her PSAT score is. It’s rough when these kids have such high expectations of themselves.
I got the scores from the guidance counselor last week, and they were disappointing. I don’t think the kid knows that I know yet. When he gets his scores, I’m not sure how he will react. He’s had one big disappointment this week already, when he didn’t get the part he wanted in the spring musical.
I’m trying to figure out the best way to take the disappointment and turn it into motivation without being unloving. I don’t want the kid to be satisfied with mediocrity. The kid has the brain to get much better scores. I don’t want him to not ever have fun with his life, but I also want him to reach as far as he can go. It annoys the heck out of me that he hasn’t taken test prep seriously and I’m probably going to end up having to pay for someone to help with test prep, since I haven’t been able to make any improvement on his scores.
@ninakatarina I feel your pain!!! @dfbdfb is she trying to compare herself to her older sister?
I think I am the only person on the planet that hasn’t figured out how to get the PSAT scores yet. I even researched VPNs, downloaded one, set up an account, and its still telling me that my son’s scores won’t be available until tomorrow. I don’t get why they do this to people. OK, rant over. I guess I will wait one more day.
@me29034 Different parts of the country are being released on different dates. College Board has a map. Some were released yesterday, some today, and some tomorrow.
@me29034 I just figured out how to do it but it took me a few tries to get an easy to use app. I went to the App Store and searched after VPN. The first one was actually just called Free VPN. Got that then didn’t have to do a user name or anything. On the first page it said something like “change location”- I chose US West. Then you click connect and go to your normal browser. Go to college board and sign in and the scores were there. If you are already signed in you may have to sign out first theh sign back in.
Not sure why I did it since I knew D wouldn’t be in the running for anything, she has really been struggling with the math on all of these tests. But I am sottting here on my couch after a super late night at the Patriots game (boo hoo!!!) so figured I would play around with it. I was right, her scores weren’t good ecoigh for any awards, but she improved by 200 points from last year so I am super proud of her! She thought this test was harder than the SAT so she will be pretty surprised.
Lots of talk at our high school that Illinois’ NMSF cut off might be moved to 222. Of course, that talk is from the kids who have 221s and are thinking about it too much. In S19’s friend group alone, he knows one more 221, one 222, two 223s and one 228. Now, these are the kids I would have expected to have high scores so I don’t know what his sample means exactly. Guess we will be just waiting until Sept. I’m glad we’re not planning on using NMF scholarships for our search or the waiting would be a real bummer.
Just got the email from the ACT board about the rescheduled test date, and of course it’s this coming weekend when we already have theater tickets for a matinee in DC. I sent them an email refusing the date and asking to be rescheduled for the February 10th session.
My husband’s work has been threatening to make them work overtime this coming weekend. With my luck, he’ll end up having to miss it and we will figure out someone who could buy our tickets and we’ll end up with nothing to do this weekend when the kid could have been getting the test out of the way.
Oh, well, kid really does need to practice to get those scores up. Two more months to go!
@sdl0625, yes, I think that may be part of it. Her older sister is a natural (high-stakes) test-taker, D19 is not.
