@ninakatarina - That’s promising that you’ve already heard from the ACT people - sorry you can’t make it, though.
So far the only email my son has from them is one telling him he can still send his scores for free until Thursday. (He doesn’t have a score because they cancelled the test for a quarter inch of snow! Argh!)
I would love to have S19 take his ACT this weekend, but our schools close for winter break on Friday - I’m not sure if tests would happen over break or not.
He’s trying to decide whether to take the SAT again in March and was really hoping to have ACT scores before SAT registration closes. I think the February ACT would be cutting it close.
@dfbdfb we have a similar situation where our D15 was NMF high stats kid and D19 is just a different kid. Just as smart but struggles with reading and ADHD issues. She was happy with her Nov SAT score until she went to school and talked to some other people and then came home thinking her score was not very good.
@momtogkc Thank you! That was much better than the one that I wrestled with this morning and it actually worked.! His scores are actually right where I hoped they would be. He got an 1100 total and since I’ve been using 1200 in my college searches I think he’s right on track and I’m looking in the right ballpark. He took this test with no prep so he should be able to improve 100 points with practice. I am very happy with these results.
@me29034 If you know someone in one of the already released states, they can simply log on to your child’s CB account and see the results. I got my S19 from GC last week. I had to tell them they had access to them:). He went up only 70 points from sophomore year and I was hoping more… I just let him be with “studying” and never did any practice tests. Guess that’s what we’ll do know for the real thing. FWIW, my D20’s private school already had them loaded into their portal last week.
@me29034 We haven’t figured it out either and are fine waiting until tomorrow. DS19 is an average kid with average scores aiming at average schools, so no stress there. He has a high stats brother but he takes it in stride and is enjoying a stress free HS experience participating in ECs that he enjoys , not to pad a resume.
Right there with you, @me29034 . S went up 100 points from sophomore year PSAT and is in the 1200s which is above average for the schools we are targeting (small LACs and in-states). So good stuff on his end. No prep. He is in regular math and hasn’t learned some of the stuff that’s on the test. So he is on track to do some prep and take the real thing toward the end of the school year. And again in August if he wants to.
Really happy with these results for my future English major. He takes after me. Honors/AP English and history. Regular math and science. Surviving the math portion of the PSAT/SAT is considered a major success in my house.
My D19 scored what is probably just above average, but her score went up 150 points from last year and the year before. 9th and 10th grade she had the identical score. She did do some SAT prep, at the end of summer, because I made her, I think that may have helped. I recently had an aha moment to tour USC when we go to Los Angeles; AKA home, to visit during the winter break. DH is a UCLA grad and no UCLA alum would utter the word USC without wanting to puke. But, my MIL and SIL are both alumna, so this may be the way D gets to go live in L.A. since she thinks Texas “sucks”. Getting in to UCLA is not going to happen, and even so the out of state cost is not happening here.
So after reading many comments on this thread, I decided that I will use her 150 point gain to show her that studying does work. She thinks studying doesn’t do anything, but I say how can it not help? She is re-taking the SAT in March, so she has plenty of time to fit in 15 minutes of studying a day or however she wants to do it.
D did very well, BUT- I saw quickly something about having to take the SAT during SENIOR year to qualify for NM??? D studied her butt off all last summer, took the August test, and was done. It’s been a very stressful year for her and if I have to tell her she isn’t eligible for finalist unless she takes the SAT again… I won’t even have the heart to tell her.
If anyone knows how that works please let me know. Best wishes to everyone else learning scores today.
SAT scores obtained anytime between Sophomore and Senior year can be used to confirm the PSAT score for NM standing. I totally hear you about the school workload…my D is sleep deprived, stressed and uses the weekend to catch up on more work. Ugh.
@SunnyFlorida22 As @ThinkOn wrote above, there is a wide time span for confirming SAT scores. S19 also took the August SAT and, if 221 holds in Illinois, he will use it as his confirming score.
@SunnyFlorida22 good luck with the rest of the week! Rough here too. Finals next week but S19 has regular chapter tests and quizzes tomorrow and Friday. Stress level pretty high here as well. I’m forcing him to sleep by 11:30. He’s blowing off winter running this week and his coach isn’t happy. It’s officially between seasons, though, so the coach has no way to punish kids who don’t show up. Even with getting home at 3:30, he’s nose to the grindstone until bed.
Almost there though! Two week break with NO school and NO homework!!!
NO HOMEWORK over break, @homerdog ??? That is simply unheard of here, how FABULOUS. I’m sure that is so nice for the kids to get a very much needed break. It’s awful to hear but comforting to know that others are struggling with all of the stress and pressure of Junior year as well. I’m very happy to hear your son will be able to relax over break before the storm hits again in January. Hope he enjoys his time off!
D19 has no homework over the break either. In fact, the entire last week is probably the least stressful week of the school year.
It’s finals week. But juniors get 3 exemptions. A 4th class announced that the final will not affect the semester grade at all. The 5th class is cross-country, where her final exam consisted of bringing in food for a potluck. So she only has 2 finals that actually count. And with one, her grade is an 86, low enough that she can’t get an A. But high enough that it’s nearly impossible to get a C.
The exemption thing really doesn’t make sense to me. You get an additional exemption every year. So freshman only get one exemption, but seniors get 4.
And since it is the end of the semester, there is no homework over the break.
I wish we had exceptions. We have zero. Every class has a final and it’s 20% of your grade. And, as usual, S19 has a couple of classes where he needs good scores on finals. This year it’s BC Calc and APUSH. He can’t really get to studying for finals, though, until this week is over. He has chapter tests in almost every class either tomorrow or Friday. I know he’s started working on his APUSH study guide but that’s it. It’s going to be a long eight days, but will be worth it for him to get two whole weeks off. Our school just switched to finals before break a few years ago and every family who has lived through both calendars says this one is WAY better.
Kiddo is on a field trip to the city morgue today for forensics. I got texts - MOM THEY HAVE A BIOHAZARD ROOM! - MOM THEY HAVE A GIANT GARAGE MORGUE - MOM I SAW A BRAIN SOAK
And then they took the kids to eat lunch at a barbecue place.
If I ever needed proof that my kid is very different than I am…
