Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

Yikes, I logged on her last night before bed then came back to over 50 posts! Hate to see the division in this group of parents, I tend to go back and forth between this thread and the 3.0-3.4 thread because I had started to become invested in all of your kids even if D didn’t fit in that group. I am happy for all of you - from the kids taking a gap year to the kids going to local schools to the kids going to Ivys - as long as your kids find a place they feel they belong that is all that matters.

@mom2twogirls and @scholarme Hope your kids are feeling much better!!

@ninakatarina - I’m so sorry to hear about your night - hope your S takes some time to mope and then starts to love the places he has to chose from!

@carolinamom2boys - Ive never heard of 1st aid flashcards but they are now going on my shopping list along with a reminder to find out about the telecare situation. :slight_smile:

@milgymfam - I love the advice to find a rolling safety but it was SO hard for us. D was pretty picky and even after looking at tons of schools she didn’t like any of her rolling options. We did find a few schools that had EA that were pretty much safeties (although but the time we submitted applications and spent so much time on CC I was afraid to cal anything a safety at all!)

I am catching up on all of the news. So many great acceptances to acknowledge and denials/WLs to commiserate with. My son was pretty upset last week with his WL decision from his “top” choice. After giving him a few days to process everything and discuss pros and cons, he has made some incremental decisions. At the moment, he is feeling like Villanova and Tulane are his top 2 choices but he will accept a spot on the WL at UVA (understanding that it may be a longshot). Re-visits are planned and he will make a decision in the next couple of weeks. After talking to him and hearing about his friends’ decisions, it’s been pretty brutal. I think my son feels very fortunate with his acceptances and his choices. When my daughter went through this, most parents changed their little icons to reflect their child’s choice. I hope we all do the same. Best of luck as we head into April and final decision day on May 1.

@ninakatarina I’m so sorry your son is upset. It’s so hard to watch your children go through pain.

Yesterday was Ivy day and also a lot of other decisions from highly selective schools came out. So it should be no surprise and perfectly appropriate to talk about it. As I mentioned above, my own kid did all rolling and EA and only one traditional RD. She mostly applied at public universities where she was auto-admit, and CTCL schools where we were hunting for merit. Now we’ve had our results for a while and have several good choices. But I find it interesting to read along and see what results others got.

@Trixy34 You are absolutely correct. My S17 was in at two of his top three…got rejected by one of the top three and took it hard. (Turns out it was his unspoken number one.)

@firstwavemom - are you guys local to Villanova at all? Because I live in the area and, honestly, 'nova has a great reputation around here.

@ninakatarina I have been thinking about your son and I’m so sorry that he’s not thrilled with his results. From your descriptions, it sounds like he marches to the beat of his own drummer, and has a unique mix of creativity and discipline. In my head, he looks like a young Tim Curry who could direct and star in a ground-breaking Hamlet while still getting straight A’s and being there for his friends.

I will be hoping for Swat to see the light and take him off the waitlist, but most of all for him to know in his gut that college decisions are not about a person’s true potential or value.

@firstwavemom You inspired me!!

@momtogkc I got them at an outdoor store I think.

@firstwavemom me too! At least for a year! :smile:

@Trixy34 That’s great to hear! We have visited Villanova 3 times (twice with D17 and then once again with S19). We really like the campus, academics and the school philosophy. It’s pretty close to us–suburban MD. He got merit $ at Tulane so a bit of a dilemma–but a good one to have.
@ThinkOn and @milgymfam – love the new icons! Keep them coming…

@drewsmom17 congrats to your S on having a few excellent choices. Bummer about the waitlist at Tufts. If he leans to the techy side RIT is a very solid choice. If he leans to more a traditional kind of kid ( mean this in a good way) who likes some tech, then Lehigh might be better. I know a few kids at RIT now and they really like it, but they were heavily involved with robotics in HS and liked that type of atmosphere, The good thing about RIT is you can start off studying in one tech area, but maybe discover the joy of some other type of tech more, and switching into that easily.

Either way, 2 good options for him at this point!

@firstwavemom - here’s my icon :slight_smile:

Congrats to everyone on admissions, and very sorry to hear about those disappointed. Hopefully they’ll bounce back and learn to love one of their acceptances, I know they’ll do well wherever they are!

S19 only applied to two places, UAH and MIT. He knew that MIT was very unlikely as an unhooked half-Asian male, so wasn’t devastated when the denial came. The only problem for us prior to that decision coming back was the number of well-meaning but know-nothing relatives who kept insisting that “of course he’ll get in, he has all A’s”. Had to keep explaining that almost ALL of the tens of thousands of applicants also have all A’s. Made me wish he hadn’t told them he was even applying lol.

Luckily he REALLY liked UAH after our visit, and since he’d like to work in the aerospace industry, Huntsville is the perfect location (EE major, Physics minor). He applied there early (rolling admissions), got the acceptance and full tuition merit scholarship in writing by September, so pressure was off. He was recently accepted to their Honors College, and this week he registered for classes. We’re flying to Huntsville over Spring break to be tourists and check out the best restaurants ;).

@parent2one I like your overall application strategy!! Free is great!!! I’m envious. Sounds like he has a great plan in place.

I’m sorry @ninakatarina about the admission decision disappointments – I’m sure your son will find the path that fits best for him after he and your family have some time to process the disappointment…

@parent2one I hope your son loves it! From what I’ve read and the YouTube clips I’ve seen, if d19 was ready to move that far from home then UAH probably would have been ideal for her.

Thanks, @RightCoaster and @mom2twogirls I was really impressed when we visited last year, and remain impressed with their communication, etc. Hopefully that continues :). It’s farther away than we’d like, but still just a one-day drive or a couple hours’ flight away. I remind myself that it’s about the same distance I went away from home my freshman year, and at least it’s drivable if necessary. He liked it better than any of our in-state ABET accredited schools, and with the merit scholarship it was cheaper than any of those, so we’re all happy about his decision!

@parent2one you are not the first person on CC to utilize that strategy. I came to CC because someone told me about CC in the past because their kid was going to one of the southern schools full ride and told me to join here and look Into it. It’s a pretty cool option. I sort of wish my kids would have at least considered it, because financially it is a huge boon. If the kid likes the school, and you get the satisfaction of free tuition, it’s a total win. I’m surprised more kids from our area don’t take advantage of that strategy. I don’t think I know any.
