Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Thank God SAT over! D20 was so nervous but got through it! She mentioned extra math section, and said it wasn’t as hard as she thought which is fingers crossed because we’re just hoping for an 1100!

Posting tour feedback on 2020 3.0 on Rowan and Marist if anyone is interested

My kids take AP Physic C in 11th grade and really enjoyed it more than AP Physics 1/2. They have a great teacher. The only downside is the new $$$ required calculator, the TI 84 plus wasn’t good enough and so now he needs a TI 89.

Picked up D20 and her friend. They both did the SAT with essay and both said they had no section V or ‘extra section’ of math. Maybe that was just on the east coast? My D thought the whole thing went ok, at least it didn’t seem TOO hard though there were a couple of math problems that were harder for her. One she worked on for a while and decided to move on and come back to it if she had time. She came back to it at the end and at the last second before time was up she had an epiphany and finished it. She doesn’t know if her epiphany was correct though of course! It will be interesting to see.

Anyone know long is it til the results come out? I have it in my head it’s about 6 weeks but I don’t know if that’s right.

@3scoutsmom I fail to understand CB’s decision to require that level of calculator. My ds wasn’t even allowed to use a calculator for multiple semesters of UG physics as a physics major.

Scores come out Sept 7th

Wow, really @Cheeringsection ? That seems so soon! I thought it would be like 6 weeks or something! Thanks.

S20 took the SAT with essay. He did not get an extra math section. We are in the East Coast @CAtransplant

Interesting, @msmaria. @Cheeringsection I just did a google search and saw that indeed the multiple choice scores come out Sept. 7 but it says essay scores come out Sept. 9. I wonder if that means that those who took it with essay get everything at once on Sept. 9 or that they get the multiple choice on Sept 7 and essay score 2 days later. Also, I wonder if they are going to have certain areas of the country be able to see scores on the first day and others on different days.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I have no idea! It’s allowed on the test and the teacher says they need it. Maybe the CB is getting a kick back from TI???

I am guessing only kids without the essay section would do the “extra math” part? @CAtransplant @msmaria

@makemesmart, I googled “extra math experimental section” and got links to various sites (wouldn’t let me post the link). Apparently, it’s an experimental section given to non-essay testers and the score doesn’t count in the final score.

@Cheeringsection funny that the scores come out Sept 7 - which is also the deadline for the Oct 6 SAT registration.

@3scoutsmom It is interesting about the calculator. D17 used T84 for both Calc BC and Physics C and she said it was fine. S20 had a brand new T84 going into Calc BC last year, but the teacher lent him a T89. He expects to get lent another one this year for Physics C if required. We will see!

Some reddit users are saying the August SAT is a reuse of Oct 2017 international version. Is that true?

@CAtransplant I believe those that took the essay have to wait until all is available on 9/9.

@msmaria I think they do that with the dates on purpose $-)

@3scoutsmom @whataboutcollege - S17 is still using his TI83 plus. He is a math major now. He used it for Physics C, BC Calc, Mulitvariable and Linear Algebra - HS teachers didn’t ask for anything different. He uses online programs for graphing and more complicated math too.

S20 is also using his TI83 plus (different courses, different HS).

Will be interesting to see how the SAT snafu is handled by the College Board. If there is a significant increase in scores because the test was the same questions that International test takers had in 2017, do they throw out this test or make a score adjustment? What a nightmare. Glad D is going the ACT route.

Can’t imaging CB is doing crazy stuff back to back. It is certainly not helping the trend to dismiss standard tests…

I wonder whether CB is putting nails to its own coffin now! Smh @socaldad2002

had to look up what you are talking about. wow. are there any CC threads about the recent SAT?

@bgbg4us Yes, here’s a link http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/2096889-sat-8-25-p1.html

Just heard it on the news. So terribly sad!!! All that test prep money and studying going to waste cuz of carelessness and/or laziness. Had no idea they recycled test but that does NOT sound like a good idea nor business practice. Horrid news, especially for students with test anxiety. If DS has to make it up, not sure when we’d be able to schedule it; just too darned busy. Seems to me CB has 1 main job - dagnabit, get it right!
