Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Daughter isn’t a big studier. This is her first ACT/SAT ever.

Yes, D20 taking ACT tomorrow and then December. Conventional wisdom is they should take it back to back as they tend to do better the second time. Good luck to your kids.

Yup my daughter is taking the ACT tomorrow. She took the SAT in August. Our thought is to see which she feels better with/does better on and then probably have her re-take one in the spring. Didn’t ever hear the idea of taking it again two months later @socaldad2002 but I guess that could make sense so it’s fresher in their minds from the last time.

My daughter’s doing the same as @CAtransplant She’s never taken the ACT or any pre-ACT before so we’ll see. My husband really preferred it a million years ago, I never took it.

@CAtransplant D’s college counselor recommends taking either the SAT or ACT “back to back” as its fresh in their minds and they can continue the test prep for another 5 weeks after taking the 1st test. They should have the results back sometime in November for Oct ACT and study sections/areas they missed. If D doesn’t get the score(s) she wants after 2 tests, she may switch to the SAT? We are really trying hard not to have her take any of the standardized tests in 2019 (other than subject tests and AP exams). We will know by January I guess?

We are waiting on the PSAT score to decided if DS20 should take the ACT. He did well on SAT but he might get a slightly better score on the ACT. If his PSAT score is high enough to make the cut for National Merit in our state he won’t bother with the ACT.

@socaldad2002 That makes sense, to avoid the spring due to AP exams and perhaps subject tests. My daughter also is involved in dance both in school and outside and both have performances in May right at the time of AP tests - terrible timing. Last year she had a performance at school the night before her MEHAP exam and also the evening of the exam. Why the school can’t time those performances differently I do not know - I know it’s an end of year event but I wish there were better days!

@SoccaMomma - I’m also lurking on various class of xxxx threads. Welcome to @Glitterbug and good luck to those testing tomorrow!

D20 will take the ACT tomorrow and her school gives it to all students in March, so we’ll skip the December test. We’ll also use her scores from the PSAT and compare them to the ACT to determine whether or not to take the SAT, but will probably have her take it in the summer if needed.

Right there with you @CAtransplant . D has her AP tests May 10, 15, and 16, and her dance performance is May 17-19, which means rehearsals the same week as two tests. Then final exams starting May 20. Ugh.

Another dance mom here. My daughter has IB and AP tests in May (14, 15, 16) and 2 different performances (May 18th weekend AND May 25th weekend). Yeah, May is not our friend. I’m pretty sure she’s also planning on taking the SAT subject tests in May too.

@tutumom2001 @Darcy123 we may need to form a dance moms support group to get through May!

Best of luck to the test takers today!!!

How did the ACT go today? Direct quote from D “it was hard and stressful”. She said the Math was harder than any practice test but the other sections were not as bad.

Administrators told them they find out scores in 5-8 weeks but hopefully they are out sooner so she can work on areas that she was not as strong in before the December test.

Just talked to daughter at 5pm. Went to Starbucks with a friend, who didn’t take it, for three hours. Thought science was tough and English was a little tough

My D thought it wasn’t too bad. She thought the science was a little hard but was ok if she just thought about it harder. She didn’t find the math harder than on practice tests, thought it was about the same. She took the SAT in August and didn’t really think either the SAT or ACT was harder or easier for her, but she guesses liked this one better overall because it was less math and the essay was more interesting. Does everyone get the same essay topic? I don’t know - and I know not everyone takes the ACT with writing. Did those whose kids took the ACT today get the fifth section which was an extra math section with only 20 minutes to complete it? I’ve heard that is an experimental section and doesn’t count towards the score?

@CAtransplant not sure we can discuss essay topics here on CC but will PM you once i get a straight answer from D who is taking a nap before Homecoming. Also, I’m hoping her math concern was the additional questions section that won’t be scored?

Art sawyer had an article about experimental questions at the end. It happened to be math this time and they don’t count

@socaldad2002 sounds good! Homecoming same day as ACT, busy day! Ours was last weekend.

My daughter thought the science was harder than the practice test she’d taken - the rest wasn’t too different. My S21 also took it and totally ran out of time on science and I think one other section. He definitely preferred the PSAT format.
