Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

^Thanks for keeping us up to date on the Twitter posts. Looking forward to AP Spanish Language!

I will keep my eyes open for Spanish Lang. Historically, it has been one of the last tests that he posts about but this year could be different.

Yesterday he tweeted about WHAP and Art History if anyone cares about those exams.

Thanks for the AP exam updates! We dropped D20 at Governor’s School on Sunday. Haven’t heard much from her since, so hopefully she is having a blast! The instructors seemed really amazing. Happy she can have this experience.

Congratulations to all done with testing! To borrow from past year’s parent thread posters: Onward and upward! Love the kid on the couch.

Re: English Lang scores - so about 45% didn’t even make a 3? As an English/Journalism major, that is quite unsettling.

@Cheeringsection
Well said and couldn’t agree more.

Congratulations @ShrimpBurrito @Octagon!

DS 20 got his ACT score this morning and it was an improvement.

Scores are still asymmetric, E25 M31 R34 S35 for a composite 31, but I think he’s probably done. I’ll pay for the September test if he wants, but he’s probably done. He improved 4 points in English and 1 point in everything else. With Summer regression, I think that this is probably his peak.

He went from the lowest 30 to the highest 31; one more point in any subject would have been a 32.

Now off to 6 crucial weeks of his club sport if he’s going to get recruited.

And so it goes

Got the ACT 2020 Newsletter 45 minutes. Not really what you want to see when you are waiting for a score.

Oh, and I hate phone keyboards

Anyone here familiar with Hofstra? Considering a visit this weekend. DD is moderately interested, but majorly interested in the carrot of a Broadway show while we’re in the NYC area anyways  She’s thinking Comp Sci if that matters. If we go, we’ll probably informally walk Fordham’s campus too.

June ACT went up nicely! She messed up on time management in math the first time and didn’t finish the section, but that wasn’t an issue this time. She’s now done with testing (except for next years APs).

@stencils We haven’t been, but we really liked the guy at our local college fair. He sweet talked D enough to almost put it on the short list. I liked that he said no one pays sticker price and to check out their tiered merit awards.

@stencils I keep meaning to call them to see when their Civil Engineering program will be ABET accredited. If it’s in the next year, it’s a possibility for my son. I’ve heard it’s in a not so great neighborhood but haven’t visited ourselves.

@taverngirl My older D goes to Temple in Philly, and also considered NJIT in Newark, which are two of the poster children here on College Confidential for “not so great neighborhood” discussions. But at this point, it would take a lot for a neighborhood to really scare us!

Temple has CivE and ABET cert, by the way, and my D really loves it there (she’s in engineering but not CivE)
some really nice perks with honors if you qualify as well.

@cshell2 yes, when we went for a tour and info session they told us that you can and should sign up for housing right away when it opens even if you haven’t been accepted yet. There is a housing deposit, but I’m not sure how much. I think it opens at the beginning of November, and you can then change your housing preferences up until the deadline without losing your virtual spot in line. We’re definitely going to do it because it’s strongly his first choice and he wants to be in a specific LLC.

I didn’t know Duluth did it that way, but it’s nice that there’s no need to hurry up and deposit. I encouraged my S20 to think about it since it’s only 2 hours from home but right now he says even if he gets into his second choice college at the U he really wants to stay in the Cities. (I’m trying not to think about what if he doesn’t get in at all; hopefully that won’t happen. First choice is CBS and second is CFANS.)

@stencils I live near Hofstra and have been there for various classes and events with my kids. If you have any questions about the surroundings you can PM or ask here.

@stencils Hooray that your DD has finished testing! Now on with the rest of life.

How and when do we get individual scores?

@Lucky4me2be Do you mean ACT scores? If so, one logs into ACT account and you click on “scores.” It was released yesterday but they say if not released then, it can be released in batches over the next several weeks. An e-mail is sent when scores are available.

Congratulations to those whose students got the ACT score they wanted, and/or who are done testing and moving forward! We decided to wait for July to give more space between the end of the school year and the test but I kind of wish it was over already (I can imagine S20 feels that even more strongly).
