I’m not sure. Perhaps the transcript is keyed in or just scanned in… Perhaps they only key in the overall GPA. Regardless of Naviance, I’m sure that recommendations are simply scannned in via PDF.
Test scores are always electronic, and don’t come from Naviance.
Our school uses Naviance very lightly. The school doesn’t enter any stats, grades, test scores or letters of rec. It is just a reference tool for the students to find out information about colleges.
Just did the Pitt tour. Really enjoyed it even with 100 degree heat index. Whew. Was able to hear from students and ask questions about their experiences. S really liked it too and said it was a very solid school for him and could see himself there. Loved the city and the area - very student friendly. The students get to ride public transportation for free and get reduced rates to cultural venues. That appeals to DS. The study abroad; and double/triple majors and/or multiple minors seem to be common. Also a plus for DS. The school spirit is very high - H2P. They get a lot of grant research funding too. I definitely recommend a look at Pitt for those still considering schools. There was a lot of interest and talk about the Nursing School for those interested in that major. Only negative for S is no School or Department of Music although there is a major so it’s not a deal breaker.
@SoccaMomma glad to hear you had a positive experience at Pitt. We are heading down tomorrow for a Monday visit (transfer possibility). Thanks for the feedback!
@taverngirl I’d really like to hear your feedback as well after your visit. We went for their Blue and Gold Day program so there were planned activities including City of Pittsburgh tours, lunch in a dining hall, upper and lower campus tours. I hope you have a good trip.
DS13 almost went to Pitt. He had a full tuition scholarship and I really liked the school and the area but he changed his mind at the last minute and decided to attend a different university.
My S20 is applying to Pitt. He loves the school spirit, the college town-ish setting, and the boatload of opportunities for health sciences majors. We need big merit, though.
I’m curious when your children got/will get their junior year GPAs and transcripts. My D20 is still waiting on hers, but should finally get it this week. I have never understood why it takes so long for her school to send it. Report cards come out a week or so after the last day of school, but it doesn’t have the GPA on it. I contacted her school in late June to see if I could get it the transcript early, but that wasn’t possible.
So, just curious if her school is abnormal in how long it takes to send transcripts out, or if this is typical.
I’m ridiculously behind on this thread, but had some thoughts on a few conversations.
Re: OSU notifications. @nycMy D19 is headed to OSU in the fall. This past admissions cycle, EA decisions were released about once a month, starting in December. Fortunately, D heard by end of January. But there were some EA applicants still waiting anxiously for decisions at end of March.
Re: relative importance of GPA, test scores, etc… My impression is that, at the most selective schools, stats can get you into consideration, but don’t get you in. If you look at decision threads on CC for various schools, it’s not uncommon to see students get denials even when their stats are higher than others who are accepted.
Finally caught up!
D20 is working full time all summer, with barely a break. She has two days off this week, so we’ll be meeting with a college counselor today (to help craft D’s list) and visiting Northeastern tomorrow.
@voyagermom You can always derive the GPA from the grades you possess. Most schools do their own calculations, so not sure why an official GPA summary from the school would be necessary.
D20s college app list is finalized. 8 universities total: 2 reaches, 3 matches and 3 safeties. She’s already applied to 2, so I’m hoping she can have some acceptances in-hand by the time her senior year starts. I know it be reassuring for her to know she’s “going somewhere” for college, so she can fully enjoy her senior year without worrying about acceptances…
@voyagermom
At my DS’ school, the transcripts were available about two weeks post school ending. I hope your D20 is not waiting for the transcripts for the athletic recruiting pre-reads, that would be frustrating.
If an applicant has a good mix of safeties (along with match & reach) colleges why is it so important to get an “early acceptance”? If these are true safeties, there should be no concern that they will get in and be going to college somewhere. For example, D20 will apply to at least 3 safety colleges that rely heavily on GPA and test scores and when we look at HS’s Naviance, these colleges have almost 100% acceptance rate if above the average scores. I don’t think my D has any concern that she is going to college somewhere in the fall of 2020 and getting an early acceptance to a safety seems like a non-issue for her.
Thanks for the transcript feedback. It seems our school is on the later side.
@fencingmom, I did calculate her GPA but want to make sure it matches the official one. I’d hate for it to be wrong. Between a 0.5 credit class and a 1.2 credit class, and some classes that count towards GPA and some that don’t (some of their electives get calculated in and some show up on the transcript but aren’t part of the GPA), I wasn’t willing to take the risk of goofing it up.
@makemesmart , nope not an athlete so no worries there. Just a daughter anxious to get her Fast Track application in :-).
RE: Pitt, my D17 really liked it for many of the reasons mentioned above. Merit is getting tougher every year. She was a 4.0/34 kid who was originally offered $10K, and $15K after an appeal (not really an appeal, forget what they called it). I think she would be lucky to get $10K now.
Also, Pitt nursing is great. Lots of hospitals nearby. But, again, the merit/COA makes it a non-starter for us.
@socaldad2002 It’s nice, mentally, for other kids to have an acceptance. Some schools prioritize housing based on dates of acceptance or housing deposit after acceptance. Some schools have competitive merit that you may be in line for, after acceptance. Lots of other reasons that people may find it nice to have an early acceptance.
@socaldad2002 not every kid is as secure about their safeties. My kid is a decent student, good test scores, but Naviance at our school has data for over a decade making the numbers fairly useless in today’s competitive college process. My kid is also going into a restricted major, where even at her safeties was told to apply no later than early October if she hopes to snag a spot. That’s at a school with a > 70% acceptance rate.
