So yesterday, D20 got out her first app to UNC-CH, a long shot for OOS. Will send 3 more apps before 11/1 and the rest by 11/30.
Question about common app GPA. Her HS has 3 different GPAs: ugpa (4.0); overall weighted gpa; and academic weighted gpa. D listed her overall weighted gpa (4.375) but her academic gpa is a 4.6. Does it matter she’s listing her highest possible gpa?
I know for the UCs, they only really consider core courses a-g which should be a 4.4 for her but she has not started these apps yet.
@socaldad2002 Don’t compare the UC app process to anything in the ‘real world’. The recommendation of the common app is to list your weighted GPA. You should not selectively remove grades in this calculation, it’s all classes on the transcript(s).
Ok great thanks. Looks like she reported the total weighted gpa correctly (9th-11th). I also hear that many colleges will probably recalculate applicants gpa’s anyways so the applicant pool has consistent reporting. Fun stuff…
@socaldad2002 Yes. Since there are so many variations in the way HSs weight, many schools recalculate based on the base grade received and the type/level of the class. That’s one reason self-reported grades are so nice for colleges because it’s easy to compare students. The SRAR was a brilliant invention!
@holychild wow! 10 is a lot to do. I would think holding off on more would be ok as long as there is a mix of reach, match and likelies in the group.
So sorry to hear you are sad @junk4rp. This is my 2nd, and last time, through this process and I am sad but not overwhelmed like last time. Maybe it is denial on my part.
Whoa – which schools send out EA notifications before Thanksgiving? I thought most EA notifications go out early to mid-December. Congrats to your daughter for submitting those apps! We just sent out one more, so 7 in total, with 1-3 more to go, depending on what my dd ultimately decides to do.
Thanks @Cheeringsection Twins are my second experience too. But what can I say, in spite of knowing everything I cried! I am just very emotional - cannot hold tears…
“We” finally submitted the Cal State apps for my D20 tonight! What a crazy feeling as it seems like she just started kindergarten the other day. Definitely feeling a bit emotional and sentimental. But also super excited for her.
Hi - quick common app question - S20 is putting in his grades. Two of his schools require this. Should he put in his senior year course load? It seems like they want it, but you can’t report courses without grades? Any ideas? Should he email the university?
For the section “Courses and Grades”, for 12th grade, the CA only asks for courses on the transcript with grades, as you mentioned. So you would definitely not enter senior year courseload there.
However, under the “Education” tab, there is a separate section called “Current or Most Recent Year Courses”. That’s where your son would enter his senior courseload.
Thanks - we couldn’t figure it out, but then the courses were already listed so I guess the guidance counselor took care of that part.
2 apps Submitted! SO Happy!
My daughter just got notification that she has been accepted at her #1 school choice (University of Missouri-Columbia). We have one more college visit planned and she has a couple other applications out there. And she is retaking the ACT and SAT to see if she can get some decent merit aid. But it’s nice to have that first acceptance letter!
