S just got back from a trip to Lafayette College in which he flew by himself and we were so nervous, his dad the most. So we definitely would not feel comfortable with him being in another country at this point.
S really liked the community of Lafayette College. He thought it was a perfect size, not too big, not too small. His dorm hosts took part in an afro-carribean showcase at the school and he was able to attend and he had a great time.
My S20 is applying to 7ish schools (depending on how many the UCs count as, because heâs applying to 2 or 3 of them). In addition to the UCs, he is applying to San Diego State, University of Oregon, and a few other schools that would put him close to snow but are probably not going to end up winning out at the end of the day. We are from California.
I didnât know there was a parents forum! Nice to meet you all! My D17 is going through the process right now of trying to find a school that meets her academic and financial needs. She has a 4.167 GPA, but her darn ACT score is 28 (29 super scored). She just couldnât get the Math section up despite her knowledge.
Welcome @Blacknblu. For those kids graduating 2020 we refer to them as D20, rather than their age (D17). Then everyone knows what grade they are in.
As for the ACT, 28 is a great score. I would target schools based on her ACT rather than her GPA, if they are not aligned. Hope itâs been a stress-free process for you so far.
Thank you. Right now, she has an âextreme reachâ with Vanderbilt ED1, but sheâs already been accepted at the University of Arkansas, and the University of Portland with outstanding applications with Vanderbilt and Florida State. Weâve been looking for breaks on out of state tuition (weâre in MO, and D20 doesnât want to go anywhere near us - LOL).
@Blacknblu ACT for the 25th percentile of admits at Vandy is a 33, so I would agree with the extreme reach.
My dad went to the University of Arkansas. Go Razorbacks! So, she didnât apply to any school in MO? My D20 really liked Mizzou when we visited, and she applied.
Well, the NLI came in and was signed and returned today. College acceptance is expected in the mail Friday or Monday.
One and done!
DS will be a member of the Hofstra Pride.
Good luck to everyone.
Now to just keep DS alive and enrolled for 6 more months. He just got 2 extended detentions for riding âgarbage man styleâ on a friendâs jeep in the parking lot.
@brown2024 I believe it is when athletes sign letters of intent. We are in Texas and it was all over the news last night about the different high school seniors signing them.
Yes, I think itâs âNational Letter of Intentâ our Texas school posted yesterday they had

I donât know too much about sports but I was surprised not to see any football players listed. I thought we had a pretty good team and I know in the past many have played at UT Austin and A&M.
NLI: National Letter of Intent â The NLI is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution.
A prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters).
The institution agrees to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year (two semesters or three quarters).â
I keep waiting for a non athlete âsigning dayâ where you hear what all the rest of the 2020 class is doing after graduation. I may have mentioned it on one of these threads but a couple years ago they posted pictures of a signing day at our school. They had pictures of the âathleteâ and parents for every kid. Got a hold of the districts superintendent to show the errors of the principal ways. He didnât do that last year. The list above was at least 4 year schools. Most of the kids two years ago were âsigningâ at local community colleges.
