Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

DS is deferred from his EA school, he handled it exceptionally well, I am impressed (better than I did!). It is kind of a “good” timing as he is at a big swim meet and has been busy physically. Nothing boost your serotonin quicker than some fast swims. ?
Congratulations to all the wonderful acceptances and for the rest of us, be patient and trust our kids will all find a good/fitting place for them to grow and blossom.

@makemesmart sorry for your DS; this is such a tough process, but swimming makes everything better!!

Surprised how quiet this thread is, since so much news has been coming out!

@NYC2018nyc What’s your favorite movie?

So far I know of only one senior who got into her ED school, and we are talking about kids with perfect ACT scores and great ECs. I’m actually relieved we didn’t let D20 apply ED. She has gotten a couple EA acceptances with merit aid, and it’s fun to get good news from multiple sources. Having to actually make a decision is going to be another story.

D20 has 3 acceptances so far, 2 with honors, 1 with merit. Still hoping for merit on the others. She didn’t do ED and still has some RD apps to finish up, for some reach/lottery schools. But she’s happy to have some good options on the table already.

So far, S20 has two acceptances with good merit at both and one deferral which was expected as it was a bit of a reach. It’s nice to know he has some solid options before heading into the winter break.

The one oddity was an email from one school this week that sounded like an acceptance, stating that ‘they were finalizing details and printing letters but good news will be headed to your mailbox soon’. It then stated that official decisions would be available in the portal next week and ended with Congratulations!

We think this is pre-notification of an acceptance but can’t figure out why they would do this. Has anyone else heard of any schools doing this? This school is one of his top choices so hoping we are interpreting it correctly but it just seems kind of bizarre.

@Lemonlee I have heard of schools doing this, and agree it’s weird. It may have been someone on this thread that posted about it…I can’t remember…but I think congratulations are in order. I would treat it as an admit.

@bigmacbeth Thanks for the reassurance! Needing it right now and thinking this next week can’t come any sooner.

@Lemonlee - my D20 received the same exact message this week from one of her EA schools. It does seem strange to go to the effort of sending a message that pretty much says ‘look for admission info in your portal next week.’

I wonder if merit aid info will be in the portal or will come later.

We also avoided the binding ED process. Merit is important to us and that was WAY too early for our DD to commit heart and soul to just one school. Her career interests and therefore major interest and therefore strong-in-that school interest has evolved over time. Getting positive responses from 3 of her 6 schools and merit letters this week from two has been a great boost for her going into exams. Not the right strategy for everyone, but the right one for our “girl of many interests”.

Good luck to all! May you have at least some positive news before the holiday break!!

DS has 4 acceptances - 1 of them with admittance to honors and presidential scholarship. He is pre med so need every $ saving.

The weekend has been a roller coaster around here, and one that made me feel blessed once more that O. got so lucky with her early application results. One of O.'s friends was accepted to Harvard, another to Duke (I am sure you could hear all their friends screaming in joy for them from outer space)…but many other friends were deferred from their REA and ED schools. I have decided “Deferral” is the most evil answer a school can give during these early rounds.

Way too many of these amazing students are now realizing their Christmas breaks are going to be a mad rush to complete the applications they hoped they wouldn’t have to send. All the while still holding out hope that the deferral will convert in the spring to acceptance (statistically unlikely for any of them). Ugg I wanted to give all these incredibly students hugs because this is just one setback but I also wanted to punch whatever admission director decided that deferrals were better to send out than just making the &%!**@! decision either yes or no.

Ok, sorry about the rant- I am usually the even-keeled “trust the process” kind of parent but my mama bear has emerged from hibernation this weekend. This is one piece of the process I think students deserve explicit transparency as to what deferment means (most likely a big nope) so the student can move on and move forward.

Good luck to those still waiting, if anyone is feeling raw from a deferral - I totally understand. (((Hugs)))

I agree with you @beebee3 I guess some schools see a deferment as a softer no - but I disagree. Particularly if a student is considering ED2. I had an extremely brief conversation with my daughter in November on what she would do if her ED1 deferred as she had 2 schools in mind for ED2 if she was rejected. It was brief as the thought was so agonizing to contemplate. It’s so hard to let go with a deferral, even if such a small percentage of students are actually accepted in RD.

No ED school for mine. Too unsure where she wants to be, plus merit aid is needed for us so we wanted to keep all options open. Has been accepted to the 4 schools she has heard back from with merit aid from 3 (and knows she won’t get any from Penn State) and honors for one.

For one we got an official financial aid letter and were pleased to see that in addition to the scholarship that she already knew about they also gave her a grant. I let her know grants aren’t necessarily renewed each year so she needs to think of it as a one time bonus, and that maybe she’ll have it in future years, but to not depend on it. But it’s for a private school at the top of her list so that was great news to see the cost go down a bit, even if just for freshman year.

Definitely won’t be making a final decision until around March when she’ll hopefully know everything as far as merit and honors colleges.

DS has received all good news so far, 5 acceptances, 4 of which are strong matches where he has said that he could see himself. He just has one left to hear from in January that is a slight reach – but isn’t really where he wants to go. He has gotten into his personal favorite and we will make another campus visit in February, it is in the mountains of NC and I want him to see it when the weather is at its worst. I guess we will not visit the others again, and I will try hard not to second guess his choice, I tend to over think everything…

D has heard from 4 of her schools, all with acceptances and merit, and two with auto admit to honors. This is great but she’s already ruled out 2 of these schools. Ruling them out is also probably good because she still is not sure where she wants to go or exactly what she wants in a college. I’m preparing her for the rejections because the 4 she has acceptances from are all safeties, and she played the lottery with a few reaches to see how it played out. Still about 3 applications to complete before the end of the year and I wish she was done, but want to make sure there are options for schools she loves (which is hard since she doesn’t know exactly what that is yet) and that are financially feasible as well.

Our D20 was accepted ED1 to her dream school on Friday! All of us were in shock as her stats place her right at the 25th percentile for SAT RW & just below 25% for math. We had spent the last 2 weeks repeating a refrain for her not to get her hopes up and emphasizing how many other great schools were on her list. She wrote fantastic essays and they may have tipped the scale for her. Funny though, because my favorite essay of hers was for LMU and now we’ll have to withdraw that app without knowing how much they liked that essay.

Congratulations @Eagledad33 and all others receiving good news!

D20 has been accepted to 3 schools so far, two with merit and we are waiting to hear about honors/merit for the 3rd. One of them has provided their full financial aid package and unfortunately, it leaves us about $10.5k short of what we can pay. The other school that provided merit looks like it will barely meet our affordability but is still a possibility. We hope to hear from 3 other schools by the end of January and then her reaches in late April. I have my fingers crossed for her!
