@jeneric – He was able to see them on his ACT account. I guess he’d linked his school test to his account, but I don’t know how.
Yes, science and math will be the priority but I think he’d like to see the reading go up too. So, at that point maybe you take the whole thing again – at least once? After that, I agree he should just focus on individual sections. Thankful that will be an option.
@TVBingeWatcher2 Hi! This should be an interesting year! Does your D have an ACT/SAT strategy? Is she happy with and done with testing or trying for a better score?
I was catching up on the COVID pages for all of S21’s schools - making sure room/board is being refunded and checking whether they are offering students C/NC options in addition to grading, and I came across an announcement for a Fall schedule…I wonder if this approach will be used at other schools?
Beloit is planning to deliver Fall 2020 in two modules of 7 weeks each. Presumably this gives them more flexibility to teach some of the semester on campus and some online ?
“The fall 2020 semester will be divided into two modules, and each of our courses will be delivered as full-unit, seven-week courses in one of these modules. Instead of a typical course load of four simultaneous courses over fourteen weeks, you will take two courses prior to fall break and two courses after fall break.”
“These courses will be taught according to a new calendar that will be completed in time to proceed with advising (13-20 April) and registration (21-24 April) for the fall. The fall semester will begin on Tuesday, September 8th and conclude on Friday, December 18th, with a one-week break during the week of October 26th.”
Last year their Fall classes began Aug 26…looks like this year they are planning to start later - Sept 8. Their calendar last year included a one week Fall break Oct 12-20…this year it is planned to start 2 weeks later.
@AlmostThere2018 sorry your son is feeling down on himself. I am glad you got some great pep talks here.
More from Beloit regarding the modules - I realize this isn’t a Beloit thread, but I’m thinking that perhaps this will be a model used by other schools as well - since this is the first specific info I’ve seen related to Fall instruction, I thought it might be of interest to others even those who aren’t looking at Beloit.
"Why are fall courses going to be done using modules?
The simplest answer is COVID-19. We want all of our students with us on campus. But we cannot predict right now if the virus will subside enough to let everyone safely return in the fall.
So we wanted to identify the best set of circumstances that could:
Bring you back to campus in the fall, and
Make it more likely that you would not need to disrupt your studies with a switch to online classes in the middle of a term.
The best solution that seemed to satisfy these requirements was to:
Start the term later, giving the virus more time to subside.
Make the term shorter, increasing the probability that you could stay on campus and complete your courses without disruption."
@1Lotus D has a SAT 1590 from March of 10th grade, she had taken the SATs 1-2 yearly since 8th grade with no prep. Then she prepped super, super hard this past summer, SAT Aug of 11th grade 1560 and Oct 1570. Sadly she Will not make NMF in Texas this year. She is always perfect on math it is the reading and writing that get her.
Edit she did every official released SAT she could find and worked backwards and forwards through Erica Metzler’s CR and grammar book. No prepping in math but I recommend PWN the SAT for math.
I like Beloit’s thinking, and the 2 separate modules during the semester make sense…seems like that could give as much flexibility as possible with all of the uncertainties. Creative!
I hope all schools think out of the box in terms of how fall instruction might be structured.
@TVBingeWatcher2 Wow!! Impressive SAT score! I am surprised that her PSAT wasn’t NMF-Did she not take psat? 1570 is near perfect. I’m guessing that you aren’t too worried about finding merit.
@TVBingeWatcher2 ahhh…but she should be commended. That will be good to put on college apps, right? I saw a prediction that this year’s commended SI cutoff could go as low as 208…D’s SI is 207!!! So close☹️. Last year’s cutoff was 212 so her 207 seemed too far off, but she may miss commended by 1 point.
Hey 21ers parents. Is anyone else scared about the economy. I am getting more frightened each day, I really fear the collapse. I feel so much pressure especially now that college is right around the corner. Just so much anxiety here.
edit: In no way am I diminishing Covid 19 pandemic. I am just asking if the economy is freaking anyone out.
@TVBingeWatcher2 yes, I am freaked out about the economy. I know a lot of people that have already lost their jobs and some that will have to shutdown a business.
I don’t even want to look at our modest 529 plan, we will have to re-evaluate possible schools in the fall based on the economic situation.
Who isn’t freaked out about the economy? Luckily we moved the 529s into money market holdings before the biggest drop. They lost about 5 percent before we moved them. So they are in tact.
Hi 2021 HS parents. I’m wondering how many of you are now reconsidering out of state schools on your list?
Do you think with all of the uncertainty in 2021 it would be wise to apply to more schools than you would have otherwise? I’m guessing early action might be even more of more of an advantage this year as most schools will have financial and yield concerns.
I’m also mulling over potentially increased seniors’ deferral grants impacting juniors next year, international students, test optional for UCs, and more. It’s a lot of change to process. I’ve seen/heard/read a few podcasts, videos, blogs about the Corona impact but I’m open to suggestions if you have some.
They finally just called school here for the rest of the year, so I feel like we can settle in and make plans for this. Although still no grading policy released for this semester, so wondering what that will look like.
Also any of you friends joining the webinar tomorrow afternoon? I suggest we bring appetizers beginning with the first letter of our user name, so I will bring margaritas…oops not an appetizer, but can’t think of anything that starts with an M
Our kid takes math courses at Stanford Online High School and there is a debate going on there right now about whether to make all grades this semester P/F, even though as an online only school there has been no disruption of the learning and no question of equity regarding internet access (all students must have this to enroll). Evidently, many feel that the students are under stress from the whole coronavirus pandemic, and that some students will be more affected than others.
Others are saying that students should have the option of receiving grades or P/F, but it feels like if they do go pass-fail it is going to be mandatory. The concern is that some students are living in corona hotspots where life has really been disrupted and are under more stress than others; and it would be stigmatizing for individual students to opt for P/F if grades were available. I guess that is not an unreasonable concern.
The school has some of the highest standardized test scores in the country (mean SAT is 1480, 25-75 is 1440-1560). If even an online school of high performance kids is debating whether to go mandatory P/F I really think that nothing is going to wind up counting in practically all high schools for this semester/grading period.
For the student who needed this semester’s grades to more emphatically show improvement, this is a problem. I watched the webcast with the guy from Davidson who suggested that first quarter senior year grades could help, but that’s not going to work for high schools that only have semester grades. Skipping 472 steps ahead, what is the ED strategy? Apply ED1, maybe get deferred so they can see senior year grades (but then if it’s the top choice, can’t ED2 anywhere), or just wait for ED2? Fortunately scores are in the bank.
@evergreen5 I watched that as well. The Davidson admissions director also said that it would help kids with pass/fail grades to have their teacher recommendation be from a teacher who could say that he would have received x grade if the school had given grades. So the student could maybe choose a teacher whose class seems most important to him or his intended major. Just thinking outside the box, maybe that teacher could also speak for other teachers about the student’s progress for second semester junior year.
@homerdog Thanks for reminding me of that suggestion - I had forgotten. I was a little surprised at that one but can’t put my finger on what bugged me about it.
