Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@TVBingeWatcher2 Rough…but it looks like commended may be 209…not sure if that means anything to colleges, but the 1590 to me is NMS level quality and think that colleges would recognize that is the type of student they want. I will be interested in hearing all of her options next spring

Thank you @1Lotus

Florida governor just extended remote learning for K-12 school until the end of the school year.

Ours has been extended until mid-May.

Honestly, I will be shocked and appalled if any states re-open school this year. Even if cases drop rapidly before then, only stringent measures can keep the numbers down. I have doubts about next fall, but at least by then we may have more effective treatments, widespread testing, more/better supplies and just more understanding of this thing.

Boston College announces new engineering major part of the new Schiller Integrated Science School approach and brand new facilities.

https://www.bc.edu/content/bc-web/schools/mcas/sites/engineering/the-program.html

“The Human-Centered Engineering program is being designed to meet the standards of ABET, the main body for accreditation of engineering programs in the United States.

An engineering program cannot apply for ABET accreditation until after it has graduated its first class. With that in mind, we expect to apply for ABET accreditation in the year following the graduation of the class of 2025. The accreditation will be applied retroactively to the previous year’s class.

The webpage for the engineering major is up. The degree offered is a BSE.”

@AlmostThere2018 I hope that you are right about juniors having an advantage. My heart goes out to this year’s seniors but I’m hopefully they continue to follow an education path next year. I can also understand not wanting to pay full price for online instruction since we don’t really know how long this will go on or how successful colleges will be with those transitions.

I think ED/EA advantage may depend in part on the school’s popularity, international and out of state %s, and endowment reserves. Maybe just the uncertainty in the 21 cycle will be enough to get the focus more on yield.

We were already going to apply EA. Now considering ED to our top reach school, which is ranked toward the bottom of the T25. I kind of hate to pass up the chance to consider the options with EA and possible merit offers from the other schools on our list. I’m also not as enthusiastic these days about sending S21 half way across the country but we can reassess that later. Tough to decide and we will keep our ear to the ground I guess in the meantime.

I’m really struggling to come up with a way that this is helpful admissions-wise for Class of 21. Maybe at schools in that 25-50% acceptance range that have a large # of internationals who don’t come.

I think as crappy as this is for the Class of 20 and their senior year, it’s probably a boon for them coming off of the waitlist. More students are probably deciding to stay close to home/go to in-state schools due to health and financial uncertainity. My guess is that many schools go deep into the waitlist this year.

My guess is that between 20’s who take official gap years, and those who just don’t attend anywhere this year and reapply next year (foreign and domestic), applications will be up everywhere next year and there will be fewer spots. Also with so many schools being test optional, it’s hard to know where you stand. I think D21 probably will need to apply to more schools due to the uncertainity. Assuming others think the same way, that leads to more apps so lower acceptance rates. And pobably more extensive use of the waitlists due to uncertainity from the schools.

Also there is a good chance that financial aid, both merit and need based, will be diminished at least a bit.

While this stinks right now and maybe in the fall for the 20’s, I think overall it’s a much worse deal for the 21’s. If I could come up with a good reason for her to wait and apply with the 22’s I would. But I don’t think she will want to, and I don’t really know what she could do that would be productive and help her app for next year, rather than hurt her.

@dadof4kids i would like to believe there will be a silver lining for our D in all of this. She’s in a pretty specific situation though. We are full pay. Her grades and her rigor and her ECs, recs, and essays will make a compelling application but she has yet to get an SAT score that “matches” the rest of her app. Especially if she uses ED, I hope she will have success if she chooses a school wisely that’s a fit. Colleges are going to want to accept kids that are committed to attending because yield will be even more important than it has been in the past.

Most of the schools on her list are need blind but there always seems to be a little skepticism around if schools are truly need blind.

We are in a very similar situation as @homerdog. Full pay, good grades and ECs, test score not as high as she wold want for schools she may like. We also don’t really have a list yet because last year it stressed her out to talk about college too much and now we probably won’t get to see too many in person! We do not want to do ED because we would like to consider merit but we will have to really think more about ED now.

In the meantime D21 started off the week with bad news. She has wanted to be Editor in Chief for the school newspaper for two years and found out this morning she did not get it. To make things worse the teacher announced the positions live in their zoom class, she is so sad. To make things worse her good friend got the position and the teacher constantly mixes them up. During the interview for editor the teacher mentioned D turning in late articles this year, but that was not D that was the friend. D did not correct the teacher because she thought it would look rude. This morning before announcing the positions the teacher was listing off articles people were working on, she said D21 was working on a history article but again, that is not her, it is her friend’s article. So frustrating. :frowning:

While it’s truly unfortunate she did not get he EIC role, it’s a tremendous learning moment. Hopefully she’s learned that she needs to stick up for herself and advocate for herself. That will be an extremely useful skill for her future, more-so than anything she would have gained in a HS EIC role.

Still a tough pill to swallow and I feel for her, but I always try to find the silver lining, even if it doesn’t seem like one now.

@momtogkc, is it possible that the teacher confused your D for her friend when she made the EIC decision? I know it would be extremely awkward (to say the least) to approach the teacher about this, but would there be any gentle way to investigate whether that may be the case?

@momtogkc I agree with the others. I think it is worth fighting for. Worst case scenario could they make them co-editors? This may help the teacher swallow her embarrassment. Sounds like there was a mix up and your daughter shouldn’t have to be the one to pay the price.

I’m not sure if its been mentioned here before, but here in CA, while the UC’s went test optional, the CSU’s, like Cal Poly or SDSU for example, will not be using test scores for the Class of 2021.

When you say “will not be using test scores”, do you mean its optional or that the applicant cannot submit any test scores? A real shame if it’s the latter as some students will have prepared for and taken the tests before spring of this year and might be happy with their scores.

Poof! They won’t be looking at test scores for Class of 2021. :disappointed:

^That will be the largest “test-blind” admission process I’ve ever heard of.

I recently learned there’s a difference between ‘test optional’ and ‘test blind’ so sounds like CSUs are now the latter, which is less common between the two.

Just had our first GC meeting to discuss the school search. Couldn’t help but chuckle at some of the recommendations - but I guess it comes with the territory of attending a hyper-competitive school filled with type A+ parent personalities. GC meant well though, so they get a pass.

@eb23282 - do tell! I could use a chuckle

Yes, @eb23282, I could also use some afternoon-break entertainment! (Guess you could say I should “get a life” but that’s difficult at the moment ?).
