@Rue4 That is fantastic news. That will help her feel much better!!! So proud of her!!!
D took Calc BC today and had NO problems submitting or finishing all parts of the FRQs. She said it went very smooth. Now on to Physics 1 (which we don’t care what her score is as it will not be used for college credit ) and chemistry which will be used for college credit. on Thursday.
Hopping all our kiddos have smooth sailing with the AP tests.
@TVBingeWatcher2 and @1Lotus - Congrats to your daughters for successful completions of Calc BC! D21 also took the AP Calc BC exam and had no trouble submitting the answers, though she did not finish all parts of the FRQs. Still, she felt very confident about what she did finish answering, and she felt pleased with herself when it was over. Last year she walked out of the Calc AB test looking like a train had hit her, so I am happy she’s happy this time around, whatever her score ends up being.
D23 on the other hand…she took the Calc AB exam and like @kartaqueen’s son, her answers would not load for question number one. The same issue. There was a browser error and the page started reloading on her as she was trying to upload her photos. She too took the demo test with no issues. She was extremely upset as she felt she had done very well on the first section, and she spent question number two choking back tears while trying to finish the exam. She uploaded the answers to question two just fine, but when the test was all over she got a screen saying her test was not complete since there was nothing submitted for question one. She has applied for a make-up test, and she explained on the form what happened. She is extremely unhappy and upset, because she is the type that gets very anxious before exams and was very much hoping to be finished today. Arg.
@JanieWalker Sorry to hear that it happened to your daughter too. DS had it happen on all sections of both exams yesterday so has to resit in June. Luckily he finally got that to work. He felt very good about his answers and was pretty bummed for a few hours. He said the biggest aggravation is that there is no sort of remorse from CB, instead they are just celebrating that most were successful. He happily read people blasting AP Trevor on Twitter After the retake in June, it should be his last APs and he is done with the SAT and Subject Tests so no more CB!!!
In any case, he does not seem to let it bother him and has moved on. He had to take the National Spanish Exam today, so hopefully he didwell on it. He has about another 10 days of class and a few projects to complete.
@JanieWalker That stinks for your D23. What a mess this is for some of these kids – I feel for them. And having a makeup exam as the remedy for the situation really stinks even more.
@janieWalker That totally stinks for D23! Totally not fair about retake. I talked to D and she will retake if that happens to her for ones she wants to use for college credit.
Ugh, I am sorry to hear of the kids having trouble uploading responses on their AP exams. I agree that CB seems to just be full steam ahead as if they don’t think it’s really a problem, and it doesn’t seem right that the remedy is that these kids have to keep studying and go through it again in June (when who knows if it will happen again). Fingers crossed for my S21 with APUSH on Friday - if he is unsuccessful in uploading his response, I think we’ll call it quits and potentially see if we can get a refund at that point. I don’t know that he’d do it again in June.
I’m so sorry to hear about these unsuccessful AP tests - it just seems so unfair to the kids who did their part.
D’s BC exam went fine; she was unusually nervous for it but claimed it was the content she was concerned about, not the format. She needs a 4 or higher on the exam in order to take MultiVariable next year (not sure if that’s a school rule or a UIUC rule).
She did well on her final for the class, which was a practice AP test that they took a week ago (teacher graded it a 5), which gave her confidence until about dinner time last night, when the nerves started creeping in.
She may not have been concerned about the format, but I was - I have been dropped from Zoom meetings regularly between 2-3pm in the past few days, so I was nervous. I literally made everyone get off the internet and went so far as to turn off the Alexas so my father in law (who checks in with us daily over Alexa from his house in Florida) wouldn’t call while she was testing. Probably a bit of overkill, but better safe than sorry.
I wonder if students who have to retest could be given the option to test at school or other public location with teacher present who…if there is a technical difficulty could collect answers and submit via mail/email and vouch for the students that it was done in the time limit. I was more concerned than my D about technical difficulties as well, but so far she has been fortunate. @kartaqueen I’m impressed with your son’s attitude to move forward and not let it get the best of him. It is understandable that a student would be upset by these circumstances.
Sorry to hear about the uploading problems for APs! This is a crazy situation. We’ve had a few spotty WiFi moments recently, too, so D21 asked that nobody use the WiFi unless absolutely necessary during her tests. Thankfully tomorrow is the only day that DH has a meeting that cannot be moved. D19 finished college finals last week, so her academic Zooms have ended. That actually worked out really well—quiet zone for finals one week turns into quiet zone for AP tests the next week for the other girl.
D21’s Cal AB test seemed to go pretty well for her. She is a very strong student, but math sometimes takes her longer. Her teacher would give FRQs to be turned in the next day, and she’d work on them and get stuck, leave them, and then come back an hour or two later and know how to do them. And then say that she knew how to do them (which she did, just not so fluently as to be able to do them on the spot). So, my concern was the whole limited time. She says she was able to skip sections and go back and fill them in, and she feels pretty good about it. She really just wants this for math competency so she doesn’t have to take math in college. Next year she’s taking stats.
@1Lotus@kartaqueen@TVBingeWatcher2@amsunshine Thanks for your kind words. D23 is feeling much better now. She needed an hour or so after the test to be very angry and upset, but now she has accepted it as “Stuff Happens” and is moving on. Her attitude now is one of hope that the June test will go well, and if it doesn’t, then there is always the BC exam next year. Still though. As a mom, I am irked on her behalf. She studied like mad and she is very good at math, and she felt really prepared for this test (and she thought it was easy). The technical glitch is irritating to put it lightly. But what’s done is done…onward.
Has anyone heard anything from their district about the potential plans for the next school yr? A friend that is an administrator for a district here said they will most likely start online.
D21 was taking the calc AB when our WiFi went out! D couldn’t upload her 1st Q (swirling) and didn’t get the 2d Q until 4+ min into that part, tried to submit with 1min left, nothing. She doesn’t know if the 1st even went.
After a breakdown, she’s fine (though not happy as both sons looked at her answers and proclaimed she would have done very well).
But, she found some humor in it when she entered English class late because she was emailing the college board, and had to tell the teacher why she was late, and some of her classmates had their mouths hanging open in shock.
These APs are ridiculous. I feel so bad for the kids. A whole year of prepping could be down the toilet. What happens if the retake doesn’t submit? And why can’t they make the retake happen right after the APs are all finished? Who wants to wait a month and have to stay fresh? Unbelievable.
And now high schools across the country (via info I’ve gathered from friends) are all considering remote classes for fall. Just one of the options but still. No way I’m telling D21 that. I need to remain hopeful for her sake.
