Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

Keller ISD announced today that there facilities will not hold any ACT testing. I saw it on Facebook this morning. ACT is expected to update the information next week according to the announcement.

@TVBingeWatcher2 can you go to the school’s website that will give your D the test and see if their summer school was moved online? That would be a way to know if ACT will happen or not.

D finished and submitted Psych test successfully, so she was fortunate to not have any technical difficulties with the 5 AP exams she took. She still needs to submit a AP Seminar essay by the 26th. Anyone else have a student in Seminar?

I am hopeful for the June 13 ACT in MN. I have not heard of it being cancelled. Her school is also having current Juniors take the ACT at school in the fall since the spring ACT that they were supposed to take was during distance learning and cancelled. She is planning to do dual enrollment, so she may not be able to take the ACT test in the the fall since she may need to be at the college campus during the testing time. It will depend on her schedule.

No problems with AP psych here either. She wasn’t wild about question 2, but sounds like she did fine.

But scores in July??? This is our first year of AP testing - is that normal???

@NJWrestlingmom I think it was July 1st last year.

Not this year, but D23 is taking it for sophomore year (which supposedly starts early Aug where we are). Her school finished last Friday (3 days earlier than planned), and she’s already gotten an AP Seminar assignment for the summer. I swear she is already stressed - school just ended, and she feels as if she already has too much to do for the summer. Seminar has the heftiest summer assignment of her AP classes, and she wants to do a lot of creative writing before her U of Iowa creative writing summer program starts. Then she has that program (online) for 2 weeks. I don’t want her to stress and wish she would take a break now that school is done, but then again, I think it might make sense to do the work now in case social stuff is more possible later in the summer - would be good then to already have made a big dent in the work and have more time for fun. All in all, it’s probably not a bad problem to have - feeling too busy this summer when most things are actually cancelled. How did your D like AP Seminar ? Our school is coupling it with English class - both taught together as a join class in one period - so D will get 8 credits for the year although they only have 7 class periods.

@nichols51 Seminar is an English class for D as well, but only the single class credit. She was not interested in the other AP English classes. My understanding is that the class was a mix of public speaking/research writing and a lot of collaboration (assigned a group to work with on project). They had 2 really big projects and a lot of out of classroom work. It was heavy on essay writing and presentation skills. The teacher is one of her favorites. I get the impression that AP Seminar is handled differently at different schools and when I was browsing the AP credit info at some of the colleges D is interested in, many don’t list it as one that they accept for credit, but maybe it was just not listed.

I searched and searched the website of the school district we live in (not the district D goes to) I could find ZERO, NADA, NOTHING about summer school (online or in person) at all. I have put in a call to the school to find out.

Our district hasn’t released summer plans yet. They don’t finish the regular school year for another month, and they always wait until the last minute. I expect they’re also trying to figure out how to handle the additional consideration of the higher number of students who are currently struggling with online access. One of the school newsletters mentioned that they’re hoping to share summer options next week. ??

It’s been July for at least the last three years. One of D’s teachers is a regular grader for one of the exams . Normally teachers gather in June to grade, so they have to wait until everyone is out of school.

Our district’s summer school is 100% online, and we’re in Georgia where the state reopening began in late April.

@Momof3B Thank you! We are very near to Keller ISD, but my D is scheduled to take at her high school. Our summer school is online, so that may be my answer. Our school is definitely large enough to social distance for testing, but I doubt that will happen. Frustrating that this hasn’t been announced by now.

D started the year in AP seminar. It is not one of the popular APs at her school and was in addition to her English class (AP Lang). She only lasted two days. She thought it would be great, IF she wasn’t already taking other challenging, for her, classes. It was a tough call for me because I was the one who thought it would be super beneficial, but it seemed like it would have added an unhealthy level of stress for her.

Scores in July are the norm. Does anyone know if CB announced this year’s AP scores will come earlier?

College board said they will be available beginning July 15.

@homerdog @3kids2dogs i saw a chart on prep scholar that said AP scores would be July 5 through 9 depending on state. FL, LA, MS, TX were first day. Maybe that has changed since the article was written.

Just saw that the chart dates have moved to July 15 to 20 depending on state or international etc.

@3kids2dogs lol! Hilarious. Not sure why they need that much time to grade tests that are 1/4th the time of the normal AP tests.

@homerdog @3kids2dogs updated my previous post.

@Momof3B , I had not heard of TAMU delaying the start date for applications. When is the opening day? I couldn’t find any information about it on their website so I’m very curious!

TAMU application opens up August 1 this year. We had a freshman admissions zoom session with the DFW Regional AO last week. Applications close Dec 1 and you have until Dec 15 to submit test scores. They are aware of the mess created by cancelled SAT/ACT testing. If you want to message me your email address I can send you a screenshot of the slide I took.
