@homerdog - very cool on Coursera. Something to think about for sure. I hope your pool opens for the summer!
Wow. Everyoneās kids are getting out before mine, and he still has a fair amount of work to do before getting out next Thursday. Heard from a summer program that he applied to - while he has not been formally accepted into it - they asked if he would still be interested - and he said yes. Itās a law institute program and they plan on making it virtual.
His job as a production assistant for our local TV station is on hold for now, and Iām not really encouraging him to look for another job. If he writes all his essays and firms up his list of colleges this summer, and does 1-2 programs virtually, Iām fine with that. I am also planning on signing him up for a history of art class, b/c he needs a 1/2 unit credit to graduate with a honors diploma, and heād like to take it in the summer rather than in the fall. Makes sense to me.
@3kids2dogs I second that does stick about band camp and the pool. Double whammy.
AP Lang went smoothly, also Teddy Roosevelt prompt. That is a wrap on jr year. Seems anticlimactic.
@homerdog love the Coursera idea, Good idea to see if it sparks joy or dread. D enjoys pursuing AoPS books at a leisurely rate. It sparks joy. Helped realize she was more of a STEM girl.
S21 just told me that he had the Obama/Ted Kennedy prompt for the AP Lang test today.
@homerdog Would you mind sharing information on any free online classes you discover? My sophomore seems to have similar interestsā¦
Iām jealous- we have 4 weeks of school left! Ugh
My Dās prompt was about Eleanor Roosevelt. We probably have 3+ weeks more of school looking on the original calendar, but the school board still hasnāt decided the final day! The AP classes, especially, will just drag on.
@CaliMex - Not sure if interest align,
one of my daughters signed up for 2 nutrition classes on Coursera and my other daughter signed up for the highly popular Yale happiness class, also currently available for free on Coursera after my nagging about the need for a summer plan. It is a start! Easy website to navigate and search via interest - now lets see if they complete them or even get started
3 more weeks of school here and thinking summer will be grim with limited opportunities for teens. Thanks goodness for the internet!
D21 successfully completed AP Lang today. We are jealous of those of you whose kids are finished with with the school year. The last day of classes here is Friday, June 19th. That means D21 will have had more than 3 month of virtual classes. She is so sick of it. State school board will not flex on the end date for the year.
AP Lang went off without a hitch here, too. D was happy she got to write about Helen Keller. That was her last AP, but kids still have another month of school here as well. D21ās school cancelled finals, but D23 ā who is STRUGGLING with online learning ā just got notice that her school is going ahead with finals. Ugh!
The last month of school is always rough, especially as nearby private schools finish the school year this week, and the weather gets nicer⦠Iām losing any shred of hope for keeping anyone motivated around here!
Oh, and we got a note today that the pool we usually join in the town next to ours isnāt going to open at all this summer.
Still, the sun is out, and APs are done for the year. Worth celebrating!
@CaliMex I always forget whatās allowed when attaching websites on CC but here goes. This website has a ton of free classes.
Thank you @coffeeat3 and @homerdogā¦
Just got an email that Dickinson College is having a virtual college application essay-writing workshop June 11 at 1 PM.
S had the prompt about Senator Inouye.
Schools starts early Aug here, thatās why were at done already.
S21 had AP Lang today and wasnāt happy with his prompt, the Helen Keller one. He said he felt too rushed trying to get his thoughts out and wished heād had more time to think about the prompt. He was fine with Calc, Chem and Physics last weekā¦so I wasnāt expecting Lang to be the one he struggled with!
School goes until mid-June here but school work will be lighter now that APs are over. S has talked about working this summer but we are waiting to hear what will be opening in town. Iād actually rather have him focus on college essays and get a start on his senior project. And be free to get away for a college visit or two if possible.
Also, we got a letter that S21 was chosen to receive an award during his high schoolās awards night. The ceremony was canceled so he doesnāt know what its for yet, but theyāll announce the awards virtually in a week or two. That was fun news!
We used to be in an early-starting district, so I understand why the year is ending around now. For those families who are done with school, consider yourselves very fortunate that you donāt still have another month to go with this virtual education mess.
D21 is very unsure about her AP Lang submission. No technical issues but she thinks it will be her lowest score. At least sheās done. One more day to cram in all the neglected make up work thatās due by Friday when grading closes. She asked about taking an online writing course this summer to sharpen her rhetorical writing skills - suggestions are welcome.
Havenāt heard back from the summer online tutoring job yet. D has some food allergies so fast food is tricky. We have a pottery painting place within walking distance that just reopened and sheās an artsy kid. I may have her walk over to see if theyāre hiring.
Next week was supposed to be finals, as far as I know nothing is planned. The kids are keeping the school laptops over the summer and the school is collecting all the textbooks this week. After that, I have two weeks off for āvacationā which was supposed to entail an epic road trip around the northeast to visit colleges⦠I guess itās virtual tours and maybe some day trips to state parks instead. Maybe we will have a ācollege planning roadmap picnicā to pin down a timeline for the summer.
Interesting 3-4 minute video about seniors in high school going back in South Korea this week, showing what the precautions look like there (plexiglass dividers on tables in the lunchroom, etc.). The clip also talks about the shutting down of individual schools based on one positive test result (for contact tracing).

We are finally done. Yesterday was the last day to turn in work, and D21 turned her AP Calc in close to midnight. A bit unclear when exactly it was supposed to be turned in. Not happy with her doing it like that, and possibly having to beg that she should be given a pass because it was a bit ambiguous when the deadline was. Iām hoping they wonāt hang her out to dry because she sent it in a few hours late. I had her email the teacher last night when she was done and ask her to confirm that it was ok that it was still the same day but not during school hours. Honestly I thought it probably was just anytime Wednesday, but then her APUSH teacher asked for everything by noon yesterday so now Iām nervous about it. I couldnāt find anything giving a time other than just āWednesdayā.
Our club pool is opening up through a bit of a loophole, but one that was double-checked with the local health department and the governorās office. There is a full kitchen and restaurant, so they are considering the pool an extension of the restaurant patio. So as long as everyone puts a food item on their ticket they can swim (restaurants opened with occupancy and distancing restrictions in our state this week). I guess several private clubs are interpreting it that way. Overall it seems kind of dumb to me, but then there are a lot of inconsistencies in the way these rules are being implemented. Lots of āready, fire, aimā going on, which I guess is expected since all of this is having to be implemented almost immediately without really having time to gather information first.
We had a similar loophole here and a few pools were Okād by the local health department to open. After 2 weeks the state health department sent them all cease and desist letters.
Hopefully the state loosens the restrictions and pools can open soon. My kids are going nuts!
