Parents of the HS Class of 2021 (Part 1)

@homerdog - You’re right. He will be applying RD so yes, won’t be hearing until next year…so clearly no need for him to get app in this early at all. But for whatever reason he plans to complete it first of his schools. (He loved WF when we visited last year during SB and had planned to apply ED but…:then he visited GW and the other DC schools in Nov last year and loved that area…and then his ACT jumped 3 points in Feb.)

So he still loves WF, but will apply RD. I think he wants to do the app now bc it will be one he enjoys completing. Like even the top 10 list thing.?

Speaking of rolling admissions, what schools besides Bama offers them? Just curious. Our state schools (FL) don’t so it’s be great to have even one rolling admission acceptance prior to Jan or Feb.

I can add a tiny bit about Rice: the dorm that my S lived in for 3 weeks there was fabulous. Big windows. Private bath/sink and shower. Two desks and very comfy mattresses. Decent size room, too. And the restaurants nearby were lively and great food. Houses around the area were beautifully restored. Campus was pretty but not overwhelmingly so (in a good way.) nice mix of trees in some areas and other areas nice and open for lots of sunshine. Very clean. Didn’t see students much (summer) but those we did were friendly and smiling. Felt extremely comfortable there and liked the museums situated around the outskirts of the campus. Easy Uber drive from airport. Did wonder where the nearest Target was but I believe the students took a bus to one while they were there to get what they needed.

Hate to be a buzzkill but I think that students who submit good scores to TO colleges will have an advantage over applicants twho do not submit a score.

Unless the college is going “test blind”, if I had a D21 or S/21, I would encourage her/him to prep like crazy this summer and take the ACT/SAT in late summer/early fall. There will be tons of applicants who got their optimum scores their junior year already and will be submitting their scores come fall 2020.

Remember your student is competing with other students and the college is going to biased for applicants with high test scores no matter that they say.

I agree it’s great to have an early acceptance!

There are more schools with rolling admissions than you think, but some schools that get some attention on CC include Pitt, Penn State, ASU, Purdue, IU, St. Louis U, NJIT, Michigan State.

Prep scholar has a pretty thorough list, but as always double check the info on each school’s website.

@Aguadecoco – Honestly, Rice is more on my H’s list (as a reach) for him than it is for my S right now. My H was a D1 tennis player in college and thought about playing there – so he’s always had a soft spot for it.

That said, my S has expressed concern at times about big schools, so I have been encouraging him to look at some smaller engineering programs too. From the little I know, Rice has a reputation for having a great community. I’ve also read they have really great financial aid and as a bubble family it’s possible he’d get some need aid there.

@socaldad2002 I think it depends on the school. Wash U? Yeah, I would send a score if possible. Right now, we don’t know if the Aug SAT or Oct SAT will happen though. If kids do not go back into the high school in person, those tests won’t be given. Davidson? Wake? I think it’s ok to go TO. Davidson is testing going TO for three years and LACs are good at holistic admissions. Wake has also been TO for a while.

I think one can read the statements released by the schools when they announce TO. Wording isn’t always the same. Some seem to be taking it more seriously and want to even the playing field and others are almost acting like they’re doing it because their hands have been forced.

I’ve started feeling like D21 and I are way behind. Then I have to remind myself that she still has finals coming up and the 19-20 school year isn’t even over until Friday. I’m still feeling stressed, but I know that that’s just me. She is also working almost 20 hrs/wk. and will go full-time next week.

We are on the West Coast and her top choices are on the East Coast, so visits aren’t going to happen, since we aren’t affluent. We cancelled our spring break visit because of the pandemic and there will be no other in-person possibilities between now and app deadlines.

D21 has started her top and UC essays since her HS highly suggested using this time. I’m so glad I don’t have to nag as her school does all that for me. Yay

Her list of 8ish schools is pretty complete.

She has a required 15 page college document/questionnaire to complete before school starts. Hehehehe

I think D21 is contemplating her essays but that’s it. We just finished the college list two days ago so she needs a mental break. That being said, her junior English class didn’t do any essay prep and she is not a super confident writer. So she’s taking an online college writing class w/Brown starting in July. Won’t be on college app essays though, more prepping her for senior English class.

I can speak to Rice as well. Agree that it’s a more competitive admit than the other schools on your list. Defined campus in a great city with research and internship opportunities. There is a metro stop next to campus that goes downtown and to the NRG arena area. Nearest target is down by NRG - I don’t know if the bus goes there but it would be a pretty cheap Uber. We toured last year and they commented about the trees on campus… something about the number being high and “every student has a favorite tree”. D21 not applying because merit is nearly impossible and it’s our hometown school.

Chiming in here…S21 will start on his essays next week. We signed up for our local popular private college counselor service’s essay writing/edit package. I felt it would be better for not only my sanity but also our relationship lol if he had outside guidance rather than me nagging.

So far, July 18 ACT still seems to be on so prep for that is underway as well until we hear otherwise.

Our school ends next week, so I’m not even thinking about asking S21 to begin the essay process. Instead, I’m going to let him enjoy being a kid with little responsibility. You’re only young once - no need to rush into adulthood, especially after the crappy last few months we’ve all had.

D21 must be a strange one because I’m not pushing any of this. She loves doing the research, keeping the spreadsheets, etc… If we hadn’t gotten quarantined she would have visited every school in America! She probably would’ve gotten sick of it eventually but never got the chance since our visits were cut short.

@eb23282 This is kind of where my thinking is too, at least for the next few weeks. School officially ends this week, although everything was completed last week. S21 has held it together these past few months so well, but now that that’s all over, he’s suddenly a bit of a mess. He clearly just needs a mental health break from it all!

D21 ended school five weeks ago! She didn’t do much the first two weeks. Even though school wasn’t sure stressful, she thought she needed a breather and I agreed. She’s supposed to start school again on Aug 10th! That’s seven weeks away. Ugh.

Yea, we ended school May 21 so S21 has had plenty of down/off time. Band Camp starts mid July so he’s about to get VERY busy!

School ended May 21 here also and S had a lot of down time. He is working 12 hrs a week and has XC practice, other than that he has a lot of free time.

School starts 8/3 and then he will be really busy, best to get as much of the applications done before then.

It’s interesting how much the school start and stop dates vary. We resume Aug 10 (7 and a half weeks remain). June has been a blur to me.

Hey… Does anyone know about Creighton and I didn’t think they did Interviews!! My D21 just received an invite from the regional rep. Humm… I guess she should do it since her school isn’t that large she’d know she didn’t take her up on it. They know DD’s school VERY well as it’s the only All Girls catholic school in the region.

@EGHopeful D21 has a friend who will be going to Creighton in the fall. She’ll be in their honors program and I think she got some serious merit money. 36 ACT. Strong student. Ballerina.

She’s excited to go. Told D21 the campus is pretty and the people were so friendly. She’ll be pre-med. I have thought about Creighton for D only because of this friend. The girls were close for many, many years while they danced together. Seems like, if this friend likes it at Creighton, then D might too.

I do think the friend is Catholic and I don’t know how much that plays a role in life at Creighton. D (for better or worse) isn’t thinking about expanding her list much at this point but that is one school I’ve got on a long list of possible safer options.
