Thank you. Yes, she has happily moved on with her Plan B. We are just grateful she has a workable Plan B with all the craziness this year. I’m more frustrated than her at this point. Her Fulbright Research proposal tied together work she did abroad a few years ago with work she did at the CDC and for her minor capstone project… it would have been such an amazing experience personally and professionally. Who knows if a similar opportunity will be workable in the future once the next stage of life dominates her schedule? Oh, well. This is a “me problem” and I need to get over it! Moving on to focus on the positive.
She would agree with your D that even if Fulbright miraculously comes through, there is no way she could have enough confidence to accept it. She was awarded a Critical Language Scholarship, which would have tied in perfectly with her Fulbright location, but unfortunately her fellowship overlaps with the CLS time period so she could not accept it. I think she may put both the Fulbright semi-finalist and CLS on her resume somehow.
Congratulations to your D on her Plan B in Espana! What a fantastic opportunity!

My daughter said today that her friend was notified she is going to Sweden or Norway as a Fulbright Scholar. After the discussion on this thread I questioned her about it and she was sure, said she heard about it three days ago. Hoping that other people also got great news!

That’s wonderful news!!!
My daughter heard of a few Fulbrights FINALLY being awarded, but it’s location dependent. I’m so happy it is working out for some people.

Better late than never, I suppose.

Yes, D just heard: she was named an ‘alternate’, which is OK since she had already committed to teach in Spain instead. It would have been nice to be a Finalist, of course, but oh well: can’t complain too much since she wasn’t going to take it. She says that the word on the reddit threads is that lots of Finalists are passing since there is so uncertaintly about the funding.

Congratulations to your D on being named an alternate. That is an accomplishment! I hope she enjoys her time in Spain.

My D just learned she is a Fulbright alternate for research. She is proud of herself since the research fellowships typically go to grad students… she knew it was a long-shot even in the best of circumstances. Obviously we are beyond proud of her.
So at long last our drawn-out Fulbright journey has some closure.

Great to hear all these updates. DD21 graduated in May from UNC with a major in economics and minor in data science. She told us prior to graduation that she was ready for the next chapter. In her case, that will be moving to NYC to work in finance. She was hired back by the company she had interned for last summer. Going to NYC next weekend to look for apartments. Gonna be quite an adventure.
She went on a long road trip with her BF and her graduation gift was tickets (very nice ones) to see the Weekend in Chicago. She is back home now recovering from all the fun
.
It will be so weird to not have her around but NYC to RDU is a short (and sometimes cheap) flight away.
My best to all of us. Has been quite a journey.

Love reading these updates and thought I’d update too
My DD21 graduated in May from Virginia Tech with dual degrees in commercial development & investment and real estate finance. Couldn’t be happier with her experience at VT! Next month she will begin her career as a corporate properties analyst with a large bank here in Charlotte. We live here but she has rented an apartment in the hip & happening area of uptown Charlotte. I will miss having her at home.
The day after graduation, she and a friend left for a 21-day backpacking trip of a lifetime to Thailand/Vietnam/Singapore/Bali, and I just got a text from her a few minutes ago that they landed back in the US (yay!) One more quick flight and she will be home!
She is my youngest and I am a bit sad to be done with having a college kid (although my bank account is happy!)

I have been away from CC for a while now but just checked for hoots and saw the updates so thought I’d make a quick post!
D21 graduated from Colgate in May. Spent a semester abroad in Florence which was likely her favorite semester of the four lol. Colgate was amazing academically and she loved her classes and her professors. Socially it was pretty much a bust. I won’t go into details but if anyone knows anyone looking at the college let me know and I can give that review.
She’s happy to move on to post-college life. Took a position as a copywriter for a ad agency that focuses mostly on pharma. Her psych degree made her a good fit because that degree at Colgate is closer to a neuroscience program so she’s done a lot of science writing. She was also very active on campus in multiple writing/marketing positions like their yearbook and an online magazine so this new job is really just perfect for her. It’s in Chicago so she is living at home until she finds a place …but is definitely moving out by the end of the year lol.
She did have an offer at an agency in NYC but the pay was less than the one she took and we likely would have had to help her a bit so she could afford it. I don’t know how new grads live in NYC if they don’t have one of those six figure jobs. She still has her eye on getting out there but now she’ll have some experience under her belt and be able to have some leverage with salary requirements if she wants to work there in a couple of years. In the meantime, I’m thrilled to have her in Chicago and she’s really liking her job and the people at the agency. I’m reliving my 20s through her every time she goes out for a fun happy hour after work!

@homerdog, good to hear from you after all this time! I remember your D was interested in writing, and had won an essay award or two back in high school

My S21 is living in a 4 bedroom apartment with 3 other kids alllllll the way uptown in Manhattan. My S is the only one with a job, and it is no way near 6 figures! They make it work!

My D is likely to do a paid internship in NYC either next summer and/or (more likely) the next. With the crazy rental market I have no idea how people find summer sublets at a not-exorbitant rate in Manhattan or nearby boroughs. I’m assuming it would have to be for shared housing but, a little uncomfortable to simply move into a bedroom for a short time with people who have already been there for awhile. How is this done nowadays? guess she has plenty of time to figure it out for herself or she’ll have networking contacts who will help. It’s beyond me (and that’s the beauty of being the parent of an adult, I suppose though it’s difficult for a sort-of
helicopter mom to learn to stand down sometimes). It’s a new era, for sure!
Dorms. People rent rooms in the nyu and other dorms for the summer if they don’t know anyone.

Really? They are available to grad/professional students who are not enrolled at NYU?
NYU housing sells out quickly, especially the non-suite housing. My S21 found out he got an internship in April and all the singles (not in suite style) were sold out, and he was not willing to live in a suite with people he doesn’t know. Which I understand. Because we were looking so very late, we paid an exorbitant price in Murray Hill because there weren’t many options left (at least in Manhattan.) EHS had openings at the New Yorker, but that location is less than ideal (D19 stayed there for one summer 4 years ago.)

That is good to know in advance what to expect. I’ll pass that along. From what my D has told me, her understanding is that most of these internships in her program are usually arranged by late fall/early winter. Everything is geared to run at such a fast pace it makes my head spin sometimes. In this case that would be a real advantage in arranging housing.
