Parents of the HS Class of 2023 (Part 2)

I’ve been hiring people for 30+ years. I know what a normal cover letter looks like. That said, I wonder if Handshake has an AI option to help students formulate a cover letter and resume.

Not that I’ve seen on my kids.

You can interview the person and suss the truth out of them.

Thanks! @Hippobirdy will check it out.

Ha ha of course but I am afraid it’s going to take over lot of things we humans enjoyed doing☹️
What left out will be jobs in trenches😟

As any linguist out there will keep pointing out—even though it sometimes feels like shouting into the void—large language models are not artificial intelligence.

LLMs are models of AI, but they are not AI, and the difference is important.

And yeah, there are some things that LLMs can do, and a few that they can do well, but the current AI panic is seriously unwarranted.

You’re not concerned about use of AI in diagnosing patients?

“In an interview, Patel described those efforts as “performing clinical trials with AI to work toward clinical implementation” — in other words, disciplined experimentation. Patel said that in radiology, deep learning models are quite capable of image recognition if they’re fed enough quality training data. However, he noted that the currently available AI systems — both those from vendors and those developed internally — are still narrow in scope (that is, radiology- or cardiology-specific). Efforts are underway, he said, to develop multimodal AI models that affect multiple specialties and therefore impact a broader range of patient care.

No.

Even if only for the fact that historically, every time there’s been a new technology that was disruptive to the job market, it has increased job opportunities overall, even in the disrupted sectors.

I know some doctors offices are already using this to generate letters / emails to their patients.

Someone didn’t proof read the list, University of Maryland is not in Ellicott City, it’s in College Park. There are no universities in Ellicott City. And Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science is in Rochester, but not NY.

D23 made it home safely yesterday. Always fun when your 18 year old drives 290 miles. At least the weather was good and no snow.

Ironically she has one online final to do today. Then I guess she will officially be done for first semester.

My child has their last final today in Calculus. I told them that I hope they aren’t seated between identical twins as I hear it’s hard to differentiate between them.

Son came home last night… it was great. The siblings were all happy to see each other and just spent the evening hanging out.

He only has a little over a week before winter session starts, but that class will be online, so he’ll be home until mid-January (except for his ski trip).

Daughter came home Wednesday night. By yesterday she and her brother were fighting over the big TV. Like no time has passed

We had a wonderful detente last night. Tonight they are all off doing their own separate things… but we had one wonderful evening.

I really did just double check to see if there’s a downvote emoji.

Though I admit I’m impressed (horrified?) that you integrated a dad joke and a calculus joke for your specific child’s situation.

All of my chickens are back in the roost!!! They started trickling in last week. Yesterday, Twin 1 & Twin 2 left to go on a Boys Trip with my husband-- London/Istanbul/Karachi, Pakistan. They’ll be back Dec 30th. First semester was a good one for both…Twin 2 ended up with a 3.25 at UT…got one C. He did really well considering the pressure cooker that is UT Austin so we celebrated big! Twin 1’s final grades aren’t all in yet but he’s expecting to finish with a 3.5…so good for his first semester in Comp Sci!

It’s just me and my eldest at home now who is winding down his time at Texas Tech. He just showed me his degree audit and after his Spring '24 semester he only has 3 classes left to graduate!!! Fall '24 will be his last and hopefully he’ll be gainfully employed and off our payroll lol!!! He and I are headed to Nashville for a week to visit my niece there. Hope everyone has a safe, healthy and happy holiday season!
