Parents of the HS Class of 2023 (Part 2)

His dad picked up s23 last night and hes on his way back. More tears from his girlfriend than from me.
S23 had to do lots of soul searching this summer. He was anxious and upset with himself and as usual i become his target.
Im not heading out to help move in. Partly because I need a break but mostly because I need to support his sister who is a senior this year and has her first game Friday.

I was so excited to get a ā€œfirst day of 14th gradeā€ pic this morning! Happy sophomore year to all! I can’t believe my 2025 will be a senior next week…I know a lot of us have 2025s also. This is crazy!

Twin 1 started back last Monday. He moved back home and will commute this year, was nice not having to pay a single penny for him this semester…his scholarship and federal loan covered everything…score!!!

We dropped Twin 2 back in Austin yesterday. Set up his apartment and got him settled. Classes start today for him.

Our eldest started back last Thursday and graduates in December!!! Aahhhhh!

T-3 days to second year move in… I’m missing all the coddling we got first year. Last year we drove right onto campus in a protected unloading area through a gauntlet of cheering students to a horde or professional movers the university hired that empty your car in seconds like swarm of locusts and who deliver everything to the student’s room for you… This year it will be everyone for themselves competing to double or triple park on NYC public streets and unload on our own then compete with 127 students and their families all moving in the same day and all sharing one elevator. Fun.

Got my guy all settled. Harder to say goodbye this year than freshman year for me for some reason. He’s happy as a clam though!

We leave Thursday, his room is in shambles—a jumble of clothing, camping gear, and also a bunch of new bedding that needs to be washed too as the dorm he’s moving to has Full XL beds (what?).

He’s so excited to go back! Which I’ll admit to being a teensy bit sad about (he’s not going to miss me!), but I’m so very glad that he loves it there.

S23 is back. He has actually texted me and even sent a quick video. Perhaps absence may make the heart grow fonder.

Took D25 on some east coast college tours which was fun. I feel so much more informed the second time around. We need to tour U of Scranton which is now my top pick for her. Not sure it will be affordable though.

DS21 is now settled into his OWN apartment and could not be happier. Close to campus. Starting to look for on campus jobs that look good on his resume. Does not need the money but we are gently pushing him to look outside of campus as well. Still not much social life in person. He is content in the metavarse. Has his car too this year so mobility is not the issue. Studies are going well. Has a hard semester with engineering thermodynamics, organic chemistry 1 and biology. Last class is called ā€œIntro to Listening.ā€ It is one step below ā€œJocks and Rocks.ā€ #rolltide.

D23 and her roommate moved themselves in this year. They sent pictures of their space; super cute and heavily themed. Also, so much added storage in both their spaces.

She made the dance team again this year. That was a source of stress for a bit, as the coaches made it clear they were very willing to cuts previous team members. Thankfully D23 and the teammates she was closest to last year all made this year’s team.

She is busy with classes and definitely feels the increased requirements as she’s moved into higher level courses.

So far so good! She has a great roommate and they are becoming friends, she has made friends on her hall and is getting involved in several different dance groups, has been able to get off campus to Northfield a few times with friends who have cars. It is night and day! Thank you for asking! Just goes to show fit is more important than rank.

You’ve made my day! Totally agree fit is paramount, especially at LACs. :tada: :tada: :tada:

Glad your DD is doing well! I thought the two schools seemed similar so it’s interesting to see how night and day it’s for her.

So far everything is good for me!

Totally agree! Glad she is finding dance groups. My D25 is struggling with what she wants to do about dance in college right now. It will be interesting to see what she finally chooses. I know its a hard decision.

It is! Mine signed up for the highest ballet level (there were only 2) and there were people in it who hadn’t done ballet since elementary school. She dropped the class but kept modern and joined dance team and dance company and auditioned for the fall show. Glad she branched out from ballet her last two years of HS because most non-conservatory college dance programs do not have strong ballet.

Glad you are enjoying it there! I really think it is partially that the stereotype of MN nice is a real thing, and partially that my daughter just had a terrible start to the year at Hamilton (roommate didn’t show up, was in the moldy trailer dorm, got Covid the second week, and the dance was not fulfilling her social needs- but she had also shut down)
