Parents of the HS Class of 2023 (Part 2)

Congrats to him on the internship: honestly that’s a good outcome for 100 applications for a sophomore these days. $20/hr is great!!! Maybe in states where minimum wage is $15, it’s not, but in my state minimum wage is $7.25. If they’re saving money by living at home, that’s even better. My kid makes less than $20/hr at his internship, but he’s getting excellent experience in his field and lives at home for the summer so it’s a HUGE win. The money is enough to pay for all his food junior year. His friends have struggled to get summer positions period, let alone ones that are even slightly related to their intended careers.

And good decision not to go to the national meeting. Never pay your own way to an academic meeting. The abstract is the most important thing and he can still put that on his CV/resume.

Sounds like he’s doing great!

I don’t think I’ve checked in here since early in the spring semester. I enjoyed all of the updates, although as someone who works in the higher ed grants field, I sympathize with all of the issues and uncertainty surrounding the summer fellowships, internships and REUs. We had a number of grants cancelled at my institution (not mine, thankfully!) and we’ve been scrambling to find alternate funding for our grad students who were working under them. Assuming the grants I work on stay intact, we actually will be expanding our REU numbers next summer, so encourage your students not to lose hope on funded positions.

As for my D23, she had a great sophomore year! She is continuing as a Theatre/Creative Writing double major with a Dance minor. She did well in all of her classes, had a couple of satire articles published (and was paid for them!), joined a sorority, and was elected President of the Pep Band for this coming year. She also started a new relationship in the spring and seems very happy. Since they were both camp counselors this summer, visiting was difficult (her girlfriend lives and works in PA and we are in New England) but my D drove down there for 4th of July weekend to visit. The girlfriend seems very sweet and I enjoy seeing my D in a happy relationship again (her HS boyfriend broke up with her freshman year).

For Junior year, she is required to live in the sorority house and is looking forward to it. It is considered campus housing (owned by the University) and it looks pretty nice. She’ll actually only be there in the Fall as she is going abroad to England in the spring. Apparently her girlfriend will also be abroad next spring, in Vienna, so D is looking forward to doing some traveling in Europe while she is there. She was just in Italy for 2 weeks in May as part of a short-term abroad program attached to a writing class she took in the spring. It is fun to hear her talk about traveling and I hope she enjoys her time there.

Before then though, we talked about her needing to budget her money in the Fall term so that she can afford to do this traveling in the spring. She worked 8 weeks this summer - 4 weeks as a Camp Counselor for an arts camp for ages 8-18 and 4 weeks as the Assistant Artistic Director for an arts camp for ages 4-8 and made pretty decent money, but she also spent a long weekend in Maine at an air b&b with some friends and has bought a decent amount of coffee and clothes so hasn’t saved as much of it as she had planned. It remains to be seen if she can get herself on a budget for the Fall term, when she’ll make some money at her work study job as Costume Shop attendant.

We leave to bring her back to school in 2.5 weeks. It sure seems like the summer went quickly!

It has been a good summer of maturing for S23. After crashing and burning end of freshman year, to slowly rebuilding this past year, I feel more confident he will approach this upcoming year with a better head on his shoulders. He and his gf did break up which made him sad but both sides could not handle the long distance at this point in their schooling (her studying for LSAT and applying to law school and him having to live at the frat that makes her very anxious). His conversations with me have shown much more maturity about everything so I am hopeful. He worked an internship this summer 40 hours a week and has been responsible getting there on time. He has spent quality time with friends and at the gym. He has been doing all his own grocery shopping and cooking as he wanted to lose weight and get in shape. His adhd is still a huge hurdle as he tends to procrastinate making appointments and we keep working on that (such as he will decide he wants to get his haircut and thinks he can get an appointment in the next 48 hrs but finds his preferred barber to be booked till next week. Or “I will ask the bursar” and not realizing that the first step to the process might take 3 business days and they dont work over the weekends so he cant move to the next step which frustrates him.)

He will be driving his car out there by himself this year (all 12 hours). He is living at the frat house and all he was told is that the beds are full sized. He has no clue about decor or storage because sometimes guys leave things and the items get moved around almost as a first come first served claiming stuff. So he is not buying anything until he gets out there. With his own car now he can figure it out.

He said this is his year to rebrand himself. Single. Stronger commitment to academics. New haircut and clothes (so he says). Fingers crossed.

This is so great to hear, and let’s hope that is the case!

D23 just returned from an OOS/R1 NSF REU (acronym overload - sorry!) that was fortunately NOT cancelled and it was a life changing experience for her.

Let’s hope all these STEM kids continue to have opportunities to hone their interests…

Hi everyone! :waving_hand:t4:

The boys are doing good. Twin 1 took some summer classes, continued to work for the College of Engineering (he’s a student ambassador) and while he wasn’t able to secure any CS related internship this summer he did launch an interesting project of his own in conjunction with a couple of others. Twin 1 is doing to the coding and AI technology side and if they can get it launched/sold then it will be a huge feather in his cap..it’s been pretty exciting.

Twin 2 stayed in Austin for most of the summer, he landed an internship with a State Rep in the Capitol, and got to sit in on special sessions regarding redistricting and the devastating flooding in Central Texas/Hill Country  and focused in on research skills, it’s been a great experience. He’s seriously considering law school now and took a diagnostic LSAT cold turkey and did pretty phenomenal lol, surprising himself, so I think this may be his future path with his BS in Econ…time will tell!

Can’t believe we’re all halfway through undergrad with these kiddos!

D23 had a very good summer, and her unpaid research position was converted back into a paid position, which she will be continuing! She has fallen in love with research, and will continue working there through senior year as she is now planning her senior thesis to be based upon a project of her own that the research lab has approved her to undertake with supervision.

I’ve loved reading the updates from other families, keep them coming!

S23 is finishing the last week of his internship near home. He’s at the same place as last year, and it’s been great. But it’s mostly coding and project management and he’d prefer his next internship to include more ChemEng. However, he’d prefer to stay local and knows he’ll be lucky to get any internship next summer. He seems motivated to put effort into applications all year.

Last year he worked as a supplemental instruction leader for math, and next will do a ChemEng class. It’s an ideal job and pays well. We’re in a bit of disbelief that he’s done with all of his classes other than engineering courses.

He’ll be in his first apartment, with 1 roommate he knows, and 2 other random guys assigned by the complex. He gets his own room and bathroom. We recently went to goodwill and the dollar store where he got his kitchen stuff for ~$100.

His savings account has sufficient rent money for the duration of his lease and he set up his online rent portal to auto-debit. The money worked out such that his job earnings (including from summer) will stay in his checking account and should cover all his food for the year with some left over for discretionary spending. He’ll manage that budget himself as a good next step to financial independence. He’s close already, woohoo.

He’s decent at food but wants to learn a lot more. This summer we’ve done some meal planning and shopping at Aldi, emphasizing that the goal is avoid eating out much, but it has to be realistic. Some of the new genres he’s added to his repertoire include curries, asian noodles, mexican, and creamy pastas. One of the biggest things he’s learned is how to stretch a meal by adding extra protein, veg, and sauce. Once he saw the beef prices he said he likely won’t bother with it (so proud). He’s only come around to beans recently and he freaked out at $1/can and then I really blew his mind with $1/lb for dried.

He won’t have a car but has a discount grocer, an Asian grocer, and Aldi within a mile (all on a bus route too). His bday is soon and if a roommate doesn’t bring an airfryer, he’ll get one as a present. We shall see how the food goes this year!

He’s had a wonderful, social summer. For fall, he’s booked a train ticket to see a friend in Canada, and a flight to visit Purdue friends. We are soaking up the last couple weeks and are really going to miss him.

Our youngest will be a senior and is doing a half-day vocational electrician program through the local CC. Our current plan is to see where both kids settle out in a couple years and then ditch our mortgage and move to a smaller house. Can’t believe it’s all happening so fast.

I see a couple of you on here from the Class of 2026 group! Love reading everyone’s updates!

S23 had the best freshman year fall semester, only to go downhill in the spring semester, and thankfully with a diagnosis of anxiety summer after freshman year and some minor meds adjustment, he’s done amazing things sophomore year spring semester - securing two research positions and lots of growth academically, emotionally, socially. He is excited for junior year and he is back at his college. It’s been a roller coaster ride with S23, but thankfully he is navigating life as best he could and is determined to make the most of his last 2 years (double major in CS, Digital Narrative & Design - basically a game design track - plus a minor in Information Sciences!).

Parenting adult children is whole other level of anxiety for me LOL.

Oh man, it’s great hearing about everyone’s kids!

S23 had a great time with his summer research job out in Arizona. It’s made him much more amenable to maybe going for a PhD, and it also helped him narrow his focus to the structures and materials side of aerospace. They liked him and invited him back next summer. He’s considering it - he does want to see if he can get a space industry internship so he can compare it to academia, but he’s not sure what the market is going to be like. He doesn’t need to decide on accepting the research thing for a couple more months, so he’s going to apply to a bunch this fall and see. He’s also using this as a gauge to see if he wants to roll straight into an accelerated masters or PhD program. If the aerospace market is bad, he figures he can get his advanced degree and hope for market improvement.

He’s also going to live off campus this fall, so we’ve been doing the learn how to grocery shop effectively and cook efficiently this summer. The boy loves steak though, and he does not have a steak budget… lol

Good luck everyone!

S23 finished his summer internship and now has the next week to prep and get ready for move in. He thinks he will be fine driving the 12 hours by himself so fingers crossed it goes well. I found a tiktok tour of his frat house from a couple years ago and all I can say is ick. I am somewhat glad he is going to move in by himself because Im not sure I could handle it.

The maturity has improved and he finally got his fall courses rearranged and it is going to be tough but he seems committed. I really hope this year goes well as with his adhd he seems to be an all or nothing kind of kid sometimes. So bullheaded (just like my ex/his dad)! He wants to be so independent but yet I am still the one he takes shopping to get my input on his clothes choices and I just had to give my opinion on all the IG reels of different haircuts as he wanted to totally transform his style (and it turned out great!)

Our focus this weekend is getting D25 moved into her dorm. She is excited so that makes me happy. She confided to me that S23 has been giving her tips for welcome week and he told her to “act like mom.” It was heartwarming to know that as much as I annoy them for being so friendly with strangers, maybe they see some benefit to it.

This is how we know our kids are growing up! The beginning of the phase where parents actually are people to be admired. Even if only occasionally. And sometimes begrudgingly.

Great to see the 2023 updates as they get ready to head back to school. D23 finished her ten week internship yesterday and is flying back to our coast(East) today. We will help her move back to UPenn for junior year tomorrow! She did a fully funded/free campus housing SULI internship at a national lab at a top school the west coast. It was a fantastic opportunity: she learned many new highly technical skills on complex/rare equipment. She enjoyed the research (engineering), had a great mentor, and was able to make some connections related to pursuing phD if that is what she chooses. She has a busy year ahead with a TA job, head of a club, her usual array of intense classes and more.

D23 did a summer job again at her old boarding school. She is currently classified as a sophomore due to taking Freshman Spring off and transferring, but thinks she is only 2 credits behind and is meeting with her advisor to map out graduating in Spring 27. So she feels behind on the internship thing. She is a Calculus SI this fall, as well as a SOAR Leader (orientation and also a year round position) she is a dance team Jr. Captain and will be studying number theory in Budapest for J-term. She’s a little concerned she has over-committed but I think she will be fine. Good luck to all the kiddos this year.

Can you tell me what type of engineering? My DD is majoring in math with an engineering concentration. It will set her up for a masters program in engineering but she is not sure which direction she wants to go with it. She needs to start the internship search soon and is worried about that if anyone has tips to finding one (I am sure her school has resources and she will use them)

The SULI program is for paid internships in science and engineering at the Dept of Energy National Labs, just google it for details: Stipend, free housing, free travel. There’s a wide variety of engineering majors that fit, and physics and cs are common too. I bet math majors are fine but I do not know for sure. The transcript is submitted and it seems that is a an important part of SULI, plus LORs of course. There are also government internships affiliated with DOD, and non-government REUs that are for science and engineering undergraduates. Most REU give a preference to students from PUIs(primarily undergrad institutions), not sure if SULI does. That will be in your D’s favor. I forget how D searched non-Suli REUs, but there was some way she had a list sorted by major or research area. I had never heard of any of this before she told me she was applying. I think she heard about it from an upperclassmen or maybe faculty.

I know funding drastically affected a lot of REUs last year –many were canceled–and also affected some of the SULI sites. It may not be better yet. Good luck!

She should run searches - indeed, LinkedIn. I’d focus on math…not engineering. She’s not there and St Olaf isn’t accredited which would nix hiring for most roles.

Use the school but most are not finding that way. Cornell until recently showed how kids find jobs and by large # its company websites and other social websites - you find jobs on LinkedIn and indeed moreso than the schools regardless of anecdotes heard. My kids both found this way as well. Yes you don’t know what’s real but apply 3 a day and she’ll have better odds. You have to be set up for rejection or non response but some will - maybe late but if you apply for 100+, some will. You want experience, that it’s not engineering is ok.

Examples but 3 a day, whatever they are. They add up. It’s slow in the beginning but you get in a rhythm. Yes use the school. Yes talk to alums. But statistically this is better and it’s just another angle covered that takes 30 mins a day.

Much better to start early than late and to cover all bases. Be open geographically and duties. It’s just a few months.

It’s about experience at this time and engineering isn’t going to happen. Wrong school for that kind of internship but as you note, a Masters would be needed for this student coming from St Olaf. An internship will be value added for that degree as well.

Good luck.

Thank you for the info! She is also considering applying for the DOD SMART scholarship and or NUPOC, and also just sent me an email about her school’s 3/3 masters program in engineering with Washington U. So many options.

It’s great reading everyone’s updates. I haven’t been on CC for a while because I was busy helping D20 move to NYC. After graduating last May (2024), she found a good job in the Boston area but was unhappy because most of her friends were working in NYC and she desperately wanted a job there too. She did the semester “study away” program while at Hamilton, fell in love with the city, and made it her goal to move there after graduation. (Side note: Is it just me or does it seem every other recent college grad wants to move to NYC?!) So after working for a year and being unhappy because none of her friends were here, she finally found a job in NYC. But that began a mad search for decent-yet-affordable housing–which is NOT an easy task when your employer wants you there in 3 weeks! In any case, she is there and loving her job, but we were both a wreck during the harried apartment search.

On the other hand, S23 had a great summer doing research in a lab at one of the universities in Boston. He made a lot of new connections in his desired field, but he’s now torn between grad school and an industry job. He loves his major (electrical and computer engineering) and is doing research in one of the labs at Cornell this year, but he’s determined to get an internship at a company this summer to balance the lab experience he has. He’s living off campus in Collegetown with two friends this year, so he’s been grocery shopping and improving his cooking skills. I’ve been getting A LOT of calls with questions during his dinner prep. In addition to the lab, he’s been spending time running info sessions and having coffee chats for his project team’s upcoming recruiting season. Junior year seems off to a great start.

Good luck to everyone’s kids this year!

After reading the earlier advice on internships, I just thought I would give everyone a heads-up that postings for summer 2026 internships have already started. S23 applied to a few last week, and several companies have already held information sessions on his campus (with more scheduled this month). Even if your DC is at a smaller college that doesn’t have a lot of visits from companies, they should be looking NOW. Some of the companies stop accepting applications once they reach a certain number. S23 is not looking in finance/IB, but one of his friends started applying for those internships in late August. Those tend to move fast. So, gently (without nagging ) remind your kids the internship search for juniors starts now. There will still be postings in the spring, but both my kids found things slow down considerably after December.

I got a call from S23 finally. It was not good news. He called and first thing he said was that he was fine but needed my help because he was about to lose it and he couldn’t do any more with it at that moment.

He either left his car unlocked (most likely) or someone broke into his car and stole his lockbox he had in there. It was a $90 safe to keep items secure as he lives in the frat house. Problem is his passport was in it. He was initially freaking out as he has a frat trip to Canada next week. He was beyond worry. They told him he only needs his birth cert and valid ID but he was still pretty upset. These are really sucky lessons to learn. He spent $800 of his own money on this trip and he was just freaking out it was lost money.

At least he called me.
