Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

I think Gilmore Girls Yale scenes were filmed at USC!

LOL! I am ALSO decluttering with a vengeance… it never occurred to me this may be universal… it’s like we are REVERSE nesting. The need is SO similar to that month before D24 was born. Sigh…

It was my understanding UC application readers can’t look anything up (according to UCSB admissions officer). I guess past the reader stage promising candidates could be passed on to selective departments?

Yes, I was told it could be in relation to scholarships. Here’s praying!

Same here and the breakdown came last night (for both of us). We are going to take a break from the discussions and let it shake how it shakes. Sick of looking, asking questions, wondering and S24 is done with feeling like he’s not good enough for the schools he felt were safety/solid targets. As a long time educator (and worked in admissions) I am bummed that the process looks/feels like this. I am not an instant gratification person and I am well aware there are many applications to read but there are things that could be smoother in the process.

This. I try to remind myself they can’t get their childhood back. My DC24 has more on their plate than I did back in the day. I had grades, SAT, marginal in-school activities and only had to pull together 4 applications (granted no common app and maybe a type writer back then) by December/January of senior year. By contrast, my kid had to pull together 8 applications by Nov 1 including art portfolios while being theatre production for two shows and working a small part time job.

They ended up dropping one of the high reach/lots of work for the application and I’m okay with that. I try to discuss it more as a trade off when taking on commitments and prioritizing because they are the type to take on too much (pot and kettle situation here) so hoping they can avoid learning some of life lessons the hard way.

@jjkgp - could not agree more - I keep thinking that there should be a revolt against this process! What would you change?

I would guess many would be less quality then student produced also :). I can’t even imagine doing it. My S24 does not even let me edit so I doubt if he would ever let me write.

It seems to be the time for dropping Stanford! S24 has also just eliminated it from his list. Too many essays for too small of a chance of admission. I guess the many supplemental essays at Ivy+ schools are serving their gatekeeping purpose.

This is too big picture, but I think this situation is crying out for a universal matching system (ala medical residencies, the New York City high school system, QuestBridge, etc.). No more ED, no more demonstrated interest, no more make-work supplementals . . . .

The SHOES! Always placed to best trip me coming into the house or up/down the stairs. The shoe trail is almost worse than our cat for top title of ā€œHouse Hazardā€. Also, you only have two feet, why are there always 6 pairs of shoes out and about??

P.S. Cannot imagine missing shoe trail. Ever.

The tour guide at USC pointed this out during our tour!

Imagine the disappointment of all those kids who applied to Yale because they are big GG fans :joy:

My daughter went to USC and it seems like so many tv shows/movies have been filmed there. I always am saying ā€œIsn’t that USC?ā€ :joy:

Granted, it is hard to be disappointed with a campus as beautiful as Yale is… !

Definitely a gorgeous campus! And more conveniently located than Yale…(for filming purposes!)

I once made the mistake of looking at their app usage. TikTok was measured in hours. Per day.

It was the first and last time I ever looked.

Here’s where you tell yourself comforting lies, like ā€œthey’re probably looking up the TikTok accounts of their favorite schools.ā€

(but seriously, several of C24’s schools have TikTok accounts and they’re kind of a fun way to get a sense of what campus life is like. Emerson did one on their pre-Thanksgiving meal in the dining hall that was very cute.)

Oh I don’t think anyone is looking for quality by early January. The burnout is real with the kids. A friend of mine was the typist last January while D23 lay prone on the sofa face down on a pillow and mumbled sentences while the mother typed. Another said that the 3 of them (including dad and son) all sat in the family room with computers in their laps, trying to edit the MIT essays in late December, and everyone was snapping at everyone. A happy holiday for all!

how’d that work out?? Did the kid get accepted?
