Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

Have you ever used the Wayback Machine? It will show you archived pages. Emerson’s date page wasn’t hit often, but as of July 28, 2023, both EA and ED1 said mid-December.

Selective college admissions are about the college, never about the applicants.

UMich and other popular public flagships like Georgia Tech (for OOS), Purdue, UMD, etc moved their EA decision dates to late January because they get a lot of applications from students who have ED’d elsewhere and are using them as a backup. Moving the date allows them to wait until the ED-accepted applicants drop out.

Yep, I checked last night and am grateful that at least I haven’t been delusional all these months.

Yup. Birdies have told me that there’s a pile called “we’re pretty sure they are going to withdraw so let’s not bother with full/committee deliberations until after ED decisions come out.”

I wonder if there is also some state or regional effect as well. Many of the more popular NC publics have EA decision dates in January, even some that accept a decent percentage of applicants like App State and UNC Wilmington.

With a lot of EA stuff coming this week, how typical is the “you aren’t admitted, but if you want to apply for ED2 go ahead?” And, what’s the right way to get a feel if the kiddo has a shot at ED2 versus having the “you gave it a good run, let’s look at these other great schools you got into?” Trying to make sure we are prepped if that comes up (waiting on 3 EAs this week from the 3 biggest reach schools for D24). This weekend should be fun, lol, I’m still catching up on the drink recipes from earlier.

This week is probably gonna be the most emotional week ever for us. There’s so much going on beyond college that I am really just praying we get some good news for my son.

Learned something interesting today that I thought I would share …
ED kids are supposed to withdraw applications elsewhere once they get in to the ED school. We have all heard stories about kids that don’t withdraw. I heard today on a podcast that school counselors do NOT send out updated grades to the non-ED schools once a kid has been accepted to the ED. I had not heard this before, but it makes sense. If true, then Michigan, etc. can just ignore any kid that didn’t send updated transcripts over break.
Has anyone else heard this (other than on a podcast)?

The Mid Year report might not be considered for EA. In addition, some high schools won’t submit that until close to Feb 1, so it seems unlikely to be a good indicator to show EA schools which applicants got in ED elsewhere.

I can’t imagine the counselors at our large public school would have any idea if their students got into their ED schools. I would hope students getting in would do the right thing and withdraw but I can see where several might not.

In fact this is true of even tippy top boarding schools as well. At least ours. Our CCOs have sent out multiple reminders that they do not receive admissions results, so kids are meant to self-report results to the office.

This was surprising to me. S24s counselor only knew about his ED because he updated SCOIR. I was suprised the school doesn’t let the HS know.

It’s the - if you assure us, then apply ED2 - otherwise, you’re unlikley.

Priceline - if you remember the old system - you bid on a hotel and they decided to accept.

If you bid $50 and got rejected, they’d say - if you raise it to $70 - you can try again.

And then of course you won.

ED is often about yield protection - and not getting the best student per se - but of course, many schools have enough “best” students to choose from - but some of those with the lower yields - great schools but not as competitive with full pay - the Miamis of the world - yes, they’ll take a lesser stat kid to ensure they don’t have to spend marketing wise and recuit to get another butt in seat.

Each one they have ED makes their lives much easier - especially those schools that have to work harder vs. the creme de la creme schools.

I don’t think that would be allowed as it’s personal information.

S24 just got an unconditional offer from St Andrews! It is a very unpredictable rolling process, so we had no idea when to expect a decision. Very nice surprise and welcome timing.

I don’t love Scotch, and fresh haggis seems to be in short supply locally. But some Scottish smoked salmon and a Hendrick’s gin and tonic is doable. Or maybe try that “Unusual Negroni” recipe I saw with Hendrick’s, Lillet, and Aperol–even better idea! Could also be a good week to brush off my recipe for sticky toffee pudding . . . .

Two of the schools my D24 has applied EA have quietly changed their decision dates, also. I am chalking it up to the FAFSA delay, maybe? :woman_shrugging:

What exactly do you mean by quietly? Please tell me they notified the applicants instead of just updating the date on their website or something.

No notification, just a change on the website. I do stand corrected, though…in looking back it is only 1 school, not 2.

I keep thinking today is Wednesday.

I panicked yesterday after spending an hour reading about past portal astrology at S’s ED school. I had S show me the portal so I could see for myself. It was a road to nowhere.

Back to the cocktail topic, I need a few presents for my sibling from out of state. Likes bourbon on the rocks, nightly. I think a bottle would be inconvenient for traveling purposes. If any small, easy-traveling gifts come to mind, I’d love suggestions.

I got my husband a monogrammed mold for the big ice cubes that he uses in bourbon. Gave it to him earlier this month for our anniversary. He loved it.
