Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

Thank you for asking! She is starting to feel better and I think being at home has really helped. So far the rest of he family feels fine. I survived the 9 hour drive masked with windows cracked and she went straight to her room and hasn’t been fave to face with any of us. We just deliver food and beverages that we leave outside her door. Poor thing. Today, with her brother at school and parents at work we encouraged her to go sit in the back yard to get some sunshine and fresh air. Hopefully she will be symptom free in a few days and we can (fingers crossed) go out to a fancy dinner Saturday night to celebrate happy acceptances (if they get bad news we will just cancel, but this place needs reservations ages in advance)

I just checked the admissions page for one of C24’s top schools, and either they’ve changed their decision dates or I made a massive error – I’d thought they were going to come out this week (likely Friday), but now it says ED comes out mid-December but EA not until mid-January.

And yes, because I am a weirdo, I went to their insta, and for the last few years it looks like ED and EA decisions went out on the same day (or at least, they only did “congrats to our admitted students” posts in December and March). So now I’m confused and anxious.

Which school?

C24 can call the admissions to clarify.

That would be unusual - I don’t know of any schools that have released EA and ED on the same day in the last few years.

The same happened for one of D24’s EA schools…they went from mid december to mid january, but just on their website, no other announcement of the change. Its so frustrating!

I think I have looked at the scattergram for the ED school about 1000 times today. Sometimes it helps flip the mood from doom and gloom but every app season is different and you never know that they are looking for each go round.

One of S24’s schools did that too. Thankfully he’s pretty chill about the process.

I think U Chicago did? I can’t remember if it was together but EA was definitely December.

Yes, UChicago releases EA and ED on the same day. I think a few others do as well.

All so they can urge many EA applicants to switch their applications to ED2 . . .

NEU splits it up, but yes they too push deferred EA applicants to switch to ED2.

Emerson. Looking back over the EA/ED threads from recent years, they’ve released on the same day in the past. This is a new thing, and they changed the website recently (someone else confirmed that they’d had mid-December on their calendar, too). Editing to add that they have an ED2 round (which may be new?) with applications due on January 3, but if that was meant to push EA kids into ED2, the timing doesn’t work out (because the EA kids aren’t supposed to get decisions until mid-January). I think I just need to stop thinking about this.

I have seen some schools allow students to switch their application to ED2 even after the deadline if they already have an application turned in by the deadline, either EA or RD. So the deadline for ED2 & RD might both be January 1, but The school will allow you to switch into ED2 up until the end of January or some date like that.

So last week was a rollercoaster of emotion, as D24 didn’t make the first round of cuts for a scholarship (DOWN!), but then a few days later she was offered a scholarship (OOS school) that would make the cost of attendance less than our in-state publics (UP!)

I realized I was just swinging around wildly emotionally, so I decided to take a step back. This is a really long process and stressing was not changing anything.

Was doing great until today. Alllllllll D24’s procrastination is hitting the fan and now she is worried she might get a B in three classes. Not sure how much is valid and how much is stress talking.

Teachers have been remarkably slow in inputting grades this semester, and having three “failing” grades for most of the semester due to this is messing with her mind (there are also some final projects/exams worth a large percentage of her grade). That and open ended deadlines that never seemed to make the top of her to-do list until it’s crunch time, and it’s really panic mode around here.

If you are going to put everything off to the last minute, you really need to have exceptional time management skills (i.e. it really will take you 14 hours to finish, not 18 plus a trip to the store, etc.)

The only way I manage my suspected ADHD is through anxiety, and this is a spectacularly poor way to manage someone else’s, but here I am! I think I feel a stress clean session coming on, because there is nothing I can do to actually help her at this moment except encourage her to focus on what she can do RIGHT NOW to hopefully pull off as good a performance as she can with the time left.

And no, she did not listen when I suggested she maybe not go out with friends on Friday AND Saturday.

I love so much that she is highly involved with her school and community and pushing herself academically, but exam week with her…0/10 do not recommend.

YESSS I read today that UMiami will let a deferred EA applicant switch to EDII as long as they make that decision by 2/9 and are ok with no merit award.

So many kinds of waiting! So many of y’all are waiting for decisions, and some are considering acceptances, and I’m waiting for D24 to APPLY! (She has 3 of 8 in, all of them within the last week.)

That’s definitely a passion project right there. Your college application will shine!

Makes sense…. The gamesmanship of this process
Continues to irk me, and I actually
Love games.

But even some EA only schools like u Michigan don’t tell people until mid January . I wonder what’s the advantage of that? Kids still need to do a ton of applications due January 1st week and not helping yield.

Assume it’s a capacity issue. I dont think U Mich is trying to game the system.

The Ross application is so cumbersome, my D24 just said forget it.
