Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

Surprisingly confident.

Enough to save recycled bottles for cost of attendance.

Does anyone know much about the Georgetown alumni interview, apparently it is evaluative? Looking for tips, interview is scheduled for Jan.

D was rejected from her ED school last night. We were expecting decisions by Friday, so they came a surprise, and the rejection stung a little. While she was hoping to be finished, she’ll now be spending the next few weeks writing supp essays and deciding exactly where to apply. She has other schools she likes, so she’ll be fine, but this is a setback.

Ha! You’d best get drinking, then.

Some Georgetown people might have more specific advice, but I tend to think there are a couple general pieces of advice that will get you very far.

For any evaluative interview, just be prepared to discuss anything in your application, and provide further explanation and details.

In terms of preparing your own questions–I really think housing and dining questions are always safe, showing seriousness of interest. Asking the interviewer about themselves is good too, but sometimes more than some kids feel comfortable doing, and that is fine.

S24 had his Georgetown interview back in October. In his case, it was in-person and lasted about an hour. He felt it went well and was more of a conversation than anything - the interviewer asked about his interests outside of school, what classes he enjoyed and things like that. It was so long ago that I don’t remember the details. He wore chinos and a blue button down in case you were curious - no jacket or anything like that. I believe his interviewer dressed similarly. Depending on the outcome of his ED, he’ll be applying there RD so he hasn’t actually completed his application (although it is already paid for - they make you do that before assigning an interviewer).

Thank you so much extremely helpful!

Thank you! I greatly appreciate this! Very helpful.

My daughter is finally over Covid but this strain is ROUGH! I hope your daughter has time to rest and bounces back quickly.

My D24 hears from her ED tomorrow. Definitely on pins and needles. She is presenting a calm front, and I’m trying to do the same. Internally I can’t remember the last time I’ve felt so anxious.

S24 hears from 5 schools this week and he is totally nonchalant to the extent that I am perplexed. He didn’t seem the least bit excited about his great FSU acceptance, and I’m not even sure he is aware he will hear from 2 today and 2 more tomorrow. Maybe he is just distracted with exams and everything he has going on with student council and yearbook. But I sure would love for him to get excited and celebrate

Ha- I had an amazing interview back when I applied and the interviewer told me I was exactly what they were looking for at GU. I got denied

I might note there are some very long, detailed interview guides available online, but I sometimes think those are actually counterproductive. Too much to try to keep in your head when you are supposed to be relaxing as much as possible.

So, I’m a fan of keeping it simple in cases like this.

My guess is interviews are of very little impact.

Many people get told that in jobs - my son (for his second internship) did not have the role he wanted.

The role he wanted - they told him he was perfect, had the right skillset, they loved talking to him - and he was upset/sad/flabbergasted they gave it to someone else.

I was like - but- they likely did mean that, now they know you and it’s great to expand your network for the future.

It’s a life lesson.

What Gtown says:

While the interview report is used as part of the admissions committee’s consideration process, it rarely ā€œmakes or breaksā€ an application, and much more often than not it works in the applicant’s favor.

Re:interviews, my D has done them with Lehigh, Syracuse, Fairfield, Denver, Wheaton (MA) and I think a couple more… Of those, all but Syracuse were very conversational. Syracuse was much more formal, which caught her off guard after the others

Just fyi if it helps anyone

Finally I may have an answer about what may have gone wrong with my D21’s application (She got in from the waitlist to her fav school, but it was a long process for us. She was the Valedictorian with 36 ACT superstore and good Ecstatics (not great Ecstatics though). But she struggled to get into one of her college choices. Now I feel like this over enrollment in 2020 may have caused it.

It all worked out- ended up at BC and had the best four years there!

I agree. I think the interview is mostly a neutral unless a huge red flag presents itself. Occasionally, it may help a little, but at most schools it isn’t determinative.

Waiting on an ED decision at 7pm tonight. S24 is quietly anxious. Doesn’t think he will get in. I think I’ve made it harder by talking about it more than I should have. Not as perfect as I wish I could be. Ready to celebrate or reassure and move on.

same here. the only difference is 4pm for CA residents. so, I have some time preparing the talk before my D check the result after school.

D24 also finds out tonight at 7, but she will be on a plane…I just texted her asking if she’ll check her portal while on the plane, or if she’ll wait, and I have gotten no response.
