Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

D24 has received good news about her early action application. Unfortunately no news about financial aid yet. The aid office is waiting on the FAFSA, which is frustrating because I don’t think the FAFSA will be available until the end of the month. I had hoped that (if admitted EA), she would receive a FA package before RD applications deadlines so that she could cross most of the other schools off her list. Now, I think that she will still cross off a bunch of RD schools, but not as many as she might have if we knew for sure about the finances. We have not had a chance to talk about her plans, but I am guessing that the list of about 10 RD applications will get cut down to only a handful.

Hopefully, she is in good shape since the Net Price Calculator indicates that the early action school will be affordable. I have no reason to think that the actual offer will be significantly different than the NPC, but it would be nice to know for sure. Two years ago, her older sister’s early action school sent the financial offer with the acceptance letter so I was a bit surprised that D24 did not get one or at least some sort of official estimate beyond me running a NPC which may or may not be up to date. I don’t understand why she had to submit the FA paperwork in November if the school did not intend to evaluate our finances until the FAFSA release anyway. Anyway, lots to celebrate and lots still to do over winter break (RD applications and some outside scholarship stuff).

S24 was accepted at South Carolina this afternoon. Deferred at UGA (100% expected). Should be hearing from one more school early next week and then the final three end of January. Lots to think about over the next few weeks.

Congrats! My D22 ended up not applying (due to sport recruiting elsewhere), but of all the colleges we visited, Smith had the best clothes in the bookstore. My D wears Smith gear all the time at her LAC. And I was wearing my dutsy rose Smith baseball hat this morning! Every Smithie I know has been amazing! So happy for your daughter and so excited for you to get to shop there!

S24 just got his first EA acceptance. This was a target for him. This would not be his top choice as it closer to home than he wants. On the other hand I would be totally ok with him attending here

Rice.

She wanted a medium-sized school that isn’t huge on Greek life or sports, with a beautiful campus and strong in CS/ STEM. She preferred to be in the Western US, no really cold weather. She loved the “nerdy/ quirky/ happy” vibe at Rice. We are not CA residents, so did not apply to CA publics, but did consider Cal Poly.

Son got two acceptances so far, both with amazing merit scholarships but they are both within 30 minutes of our home, a bit too close for him lol!

DH, D22 and I went wild buying everything we could find at dollar store in D24s school colors (Mylar balloons are a great deal there). We then decorated her room while she’s at school. Can’t wait for her reaction when she sees it!

We bought a bumper sticker and slapped it on.

You now have a limited edition, customized, Rice Owl Volvo.

Congrats. Go eat your spinach.

Some of the CSUs are still accepting applications.

Yes one of my D24’s friends was accepted to SF State for nursing, and she applied on 11/30. The governor has threatened to cut funding for under enrolled CSU campuses.

Looks like nearly 80% of CSUs are still accepting applications.

D24 just got into Bryn Mawr ED with the 35K presidential scholarship. We were shocked. I guess don’t listen to everyone who says that you will be penalized on merit if you apply ED. They assured us they give money in all rounds, and they did. I cannot say what a relief it was since we could technically afford full tuition but the thought made me more than a little ill. This makes it much more affordable with our 529. I screamed so loud!

The only sad part is that a good friend also applied and did not get in. :frowning: I had really hoped that would not happen, and my daughter is very sad for her friend. I hope it doesn’t hurt our friendship. I had hoped they would be there together. I know she will be fine in the long run, but it is a little hard being so proud of my child and so happy and knowing our friends hearts are hurting.

2 of D24s friends got rejected from their EDs today - Brown and Bowdoin. They are great kids who will definitely land where they are supposed to be!

D24 got accepted to 2 more EA schools both with generous merit. We are thrilled to have multiple options (9/9 accepted so far ) all with affordable COA so it’s nice to have these decisions in hand before the holidays.

D24 doesn’t have her heart set on any particular school yet as we are awaiting honors for a couple of schools so we have a couple of months before we want to make a decision.

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted this week and hugs to folks who didn’t get in in this ED/EA round. As @Thorsmom66 said up-thread, onward and upward.

According to the NY Times, Harvard’s early applications dropped 17 percent this year. I suspect that we will see some shifts in applications this year because of recent political events on some campuses. If so, it will be interesting to see where the applications go. Applications to Yale seem to have increased only slightly. Williams appears to have seen a substantial increase in applications, but at least part of that increase may still be due to its recent switch to a very generous financial aid policy. A bunch of other schools (most interestingly UPenn) have not released data yet.

The application patterns are quite consistent with experiences at S24’s school so far this year. A strong year at Harvard; Yale and Princeton seem relatively steady; and Williams was unusually difficult.
