Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

Good luck to you all, with all the fresh apps!

Sorry to keep jumping ahead, but back to the potential utility of a parent FB group. This morning I learned a super useful tip about a new public transportation option from airport to campus that is not obvious and I would never have thought to look for.

I just checked and the extended deadline is now actually on their admissions website:

https://www.vassar.edu/admission/apply/requirements/

I don’t know if we will ever get the full details on their email strategy, but I would tend to agree at this point they are happy to get applications by then from anyone who would like to.

Good luck. I hate dental procedures (no offense meant to anyone in the dental field).

If ever anyone asked why I started spending so much time here . . . .

I never posted on the parent FB account unless it was at the request of my child for some information - and with both children it was phenomenally useful in answering their questions pre-move in about the dorm spaces, packing lists, transportation options. Strongly recommend.

As someone who grades lots of student writing, I discovered this year that when given similar prompts, Chat GPT will often ā€œreuseā€ sentences or phrases. These then become easy markers for who is using AI…

I am surprised that I haven’t seen more warnings about this to college applicants. If an admissions officer reads 1,000 supplemental essays, all using the same prompt, I think that there is a VERY high likelihood that there will be some recurring phrases or sentences or word combinations that will really stand out.

Admissions is a stressful time with many parameters in play. The lucky ones get their early admits, most other applicants have to hustle through a longer and more arduous process. whilst many outcomes can be expected, strategy can help to significantly enhance your chances. Add many EAs, add schools which require only a check with no additional essays, pick a safety you really like, pick schools where you have a massive hook ( in state flagship etc)

I think we just completed the FAFSA, lol not sure with all the error messages I kept getting. Oddly it didn’t ask my husband to sign off (only my son and I) so hence why I’m unsure if it was done correctly.

Has anyone else been able to complete it? The status under my son account say submitted.

We have been full steam ahead here as well, it’s been fun actually! I am so so thankful S24 only applied to one EA. The essays, his ec list, the application as a whole is so much better now than it was a couple months back. He has had time to think about it. He adjusted his common app essay, slight edits that make a huge shift in tone. His supplementals are authentic, each one giving a different angle of who he is, what his values are. I’m just sitting here smiling with my coffee knowing that whatever happens, he can say it was truly the best that he could have done. Looking back at his EA rejection application, it’s clear where it may have gone wrong. I give him a lot of credit, because I wanted him to apply to his #1 choice in EA but he refused saying that a LOR he was waiting on wouldnt be ready on time, and it was a critical one from his research mentor, he got published between then and now and accepted into a national conference.

All to say, yes the wait is longer, but it’s been 4 years already, a couple more months is not a big deal, and to be able to say he really gave it the best he could. No drinking here, but I sure do love my Gilmore coffee! lol

D24 has submitted 4 RD applications with about half a dozen to go. Progress is being made. Her process is to produce rough drafts 5-6 days before a particular deadline followed by subsequent days of rewriting, refinement, and polish. Unlike her ED application, she’s at least submitted her all her RD applications a couple days early so far. So, on any given day, she’s working on multiple essays, some which are rough drafts that are due in several days and some of which are due soon and need polish. Not the best way to spend one’s break, but it is what it is.

DC24 submitted 2 yesterday in the nick of time. The roller coaster ride is expected to continue. Any fun non-alcoholic drinks suggestions?

D24 submitted all his applications and now we wait.

Just dropped off DS at the airport. He’s headed back to school. I’m sadder than normal. It’s the beginning of a sea change. Good luck to those finalizing their apps and congrats to those that are done. Happy New Year and take care all.

There are so many cool things you can do with a nice ginger beer, or at least Vernors. You can make non-alcoholic ā€œmulesā€, all sorts of fruit punches, and so on. It takes well to combining with herbs and/or bitters and/or teas, all of which will highlight different flavor profiles.

Of course if you don’t like ginger, then this isn’t going to work out well.

DS gets this mocktail with ginger beer, lime and cucumber.

It’s too on their part. They emailed the extended date too late and my D found that commonapp date was still Jan 1st yesterday. So she was not sure if she should wait but submitted. I don’t know if she could do good job with her essay. It’s definitely a high reach for her so we didn’t really worry much.

Looks like these are all money making strategies.

Completed 2 FAFSAs, for D24 & S24 yesterday. It was quick & fairly easy. It did specifically say that only one parent had to sign if you were married filing jointly.

Ours also say submitted, and to wait until the end of Jan so…sounds like we’ve both done it !

Awesome, so I did it correctly, thank god. It was way easier than the CSS.

Honestly I think the trick to a non alcoholic drink is a fancy glass and an add in. I’ll put some fancy tonic in my highball glass with a sprig of rosemary, or a sparkling punch in a champagne glass with a raspberry. My sister makes fancy shrugs that are fun too.
